Swede Gyokeres, also wanted by Manchester United and Juventus, favours a switch to the Gunners and claims his club have broken a gentleman's agreement that he could leave for £60million.
Sporting know there is massive interest in their star and are demanding at least £68.5m.
The Lisbon club's president Frederico Varandas — who has had a public falling out with the former Coventry forward — felt Gyokeres' threat to snub pre-season was just a bluff.
Sporting hoped he would return to the Portuguese capital today before meeting up with the squad tomorrow.

Gyokeres got extra time off during the summer following his international duty with Sweden last month.
But Portuguese sources have told SunSport that Gyokeres, who netted 54 goals in 52 appearances last term, is increasingly unlikely to not turn up.
He is angry with the way the situation has been handled, which is great news for Arsenal.
Gyokeres has snubbed lucrative offers from Saudi Pro League sides Al-Qadsiah and Al-Hilal — who were prepared to offer him millions — because he would rather play in the Prem.

Varandas said £51.8m in guaranteed payments plus £8.6m in add-ons would not be enough to persuade Sporting to sell their star player.
Though a package of just over £60m — with the extra £8.6m tied to achievable targets — might persuade Sporting to do a deal as they will not want to keep an unhappy Gyokeres at the club.

Sesko, 22, is due to return to training with Leipzig on Saturday.

Celtic 'fighting' to sign Portugal U21 international left-back

The 21-year-old, along with Paulo Bernardo, was part of the Portuguese under-21 squad that reached the quarter-finals of the under-21 European Championships this summer. Nazinho only joined Cercle permanently last year, penning a four-year deal after an initial spell on loan from Sporting CP. Read more: After a standout campaign in which he scored two goals and registered six assists in 39 games from left-back, he is now 'expected' to depart Belgium, claims Portuguese outlet Record, who say that Celtic are 'fighting' with La Liga's Real Sociedad and Serie A outfit Roma for his services. The Parkhead club will undoubtedly be in the market for another left-back this summer to provide cover for the returning Kieran Tierney. Recently speaking on the Official Celtic FC Podcast, he outlined how much he can't wait to be back playing for his boyhood team. Tierney said: "I've not been to a game at Celtic Park, but I went to Hampden for a semi-final, which we unfortunately did not win. "That was the only game I got back to because the schedule when I was away as well is just as mental. "I've thought about it [Celtic Park], though. We've parked at Celtic Park to come here, and the feeling you get is something that I've not had for a while. "That'll be a special day, it really will. "My family are so proud, and they always are, but I think coming home is something special, because it is the dream that I have worked towards for all my life. To come back is amazing, and I think if I'm being honest with myself, it was always a matter of when. "I just can't wait to get back in action."

Arsenal close in on Noni Madueke transfer as Viktor Gyokeres takes action

Arsenal have signed three new players this summer and plenty more incomings are expected before the transfer window slams shut, with Noni Madueke close to joining from Chelsea Arsenal's transfer business has ramped up in recent weeks, with Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard all officially joining the club this month. And the spending is set to continue as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his squad. The Gunners have finished second in the last three Premier League campaigns and will be desperate to win their first league title since 2004 next season. There have also been several outgoings, with Nuno Tavares and Marquinhos joining Lazio and Cruzeiro respectively. ‌ Jorginho and Kieran Tierney have also signed for Flamengo and Celtic after their contracts expired, while the club reached an agreement with Takehiro Tomiyasu to terminate his deal a year early. ‌ And with all that in mind, Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest transfer news and rumours from in and around the Emirates... Madueke move close Noni Madueke is set to become Arsenal's newest signing, with the Athletic reporting that Chelsea have given him permission to travel back to the UK for a medical. Arsenal have agreed a £52m deal for the England international, who is set to put pen to paper on a five-year deal. Madueke produced 29 goal contributions in 92 appearances for Chelsea, having joined the club from PSV Eindhoven back in 2023. ‌ The 23-year-old will be Arsenal's fourth summer signing after goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard. Gyokeres goes on strike Viktor Gyokeres has effectively gone on strike in an attempt to force through a move away from Sporting Lisbon this summer. ‌ Arsenal remain the favourites to sign the striker, but they have so far failed to reach an agreement with Sporting. However, Gyokeres has now refused to turn up for pre-season training in an attempt to force Sporting's hand. Portuguese outlet Record have reported that a €5m (£4.3m) gap remains between the clubs after their latest talks, with the Gunners prepared to €65m (£56m) upfront plus future payments of €5m (£4.3m) and an additional €10m (£8.6m) in add-ons. ‌ Eze latest Mirror Football understands that Arsenal are poised to make a formal approach to Crystal Palace for Eberechi Eze. Eze has a £68m release clause and the Gunners have held several rounds of talks with the player's representatives, CAA Base. Arsenal are hoping they can sign Eze for less than that, but Palace have no desire to accept a lower offer. The Eagles are optimistic that Eze will remain at Selhurst Park, although the England international is open to a move away. Marcus Rashford handed exit route as Viktor Gyokeres makes shock decision

Ruben Amorim has been frustrated by slow progress on transfer deals at Manchester United after seeing just one signing - Matheus Cunha from Wolves - arriving through the door at Old Trafford Manchester United have one signing through the door this summer, but they have no plans to stop there as Ruben Amorim continues revamping his struggling squad. So far, Matheus Cunha is the only player who has arrived at Old Trafford after being signed for £62.5million and there are some frustrations from fans over the lack of progress over other deals. ‌ United are still locked in talks with Brentford over a possible move for Bryan Mbeumo but have been unable to agree a fee. ‌ There are also a number of unwanted stars like Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho whose futures need finalising as the club look to balance the books and rake in more funds for transfers. With that in mind, Mirror Football has outlined some of the biggest Manchester United transfer stories and gossip. Barcelona make Rashford "priority" target Marcus Rashford will be desperate to make his exit from United this summer after being cast aside by Amorim, forced to train by himself away from the squad at Carrington. ‌ United did give Rashford extra time to find a new club following his short loan spell at Aston Villa last season - and now the England star may have found a solution. According to Sky in Germany, Barcelona had seen a bid for Liverpool winger Luis Diaz rejected and are now prepared to go "all-in" on Rashford. ‌ The report says boss Hansi Flick has already given the green light to the move, which Barcelona hope will be a loan deal. United might also have to subsidise a portion of Rashford's wages due to the player's eye-watering £325,000-a-week wages and he is said to be willing to lower his wage demands in order to secure an exit. Gyokeres reconsidering United move For months, Manchester United were being talked about as the leading frontrunners to sign Viktor Gyokeres, due to the striker's relationship with boss Amorim. ‌ The Portuguese coach helped turn the Swedish star into one of the deadliest strikers in world football but United's failure to qualify for European football saw them fall away from contention - with Arsenal stepping up as favourites. It's understood Arsenal are offering a package of €65m (£56m) plus future payments of €5m and €10m (£8.6m) in add-ons but are around £4m off of Sporting's valuation. ‌ Sporting have asked for a "cooling off period" before restarting talks and Gyokeres has reportedly had enough of being patient and has gone on strike at the club - refusing to turn up for the start of pre-season. And now Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha have claimed Gyokeres has opened the door to United once again and is giving the Red Devils a "second look" after being forced to wait to join Arsenal. United want to add another forward player alongside Cunha and would jump at the chance to sign Gyokeres, who netted 54 goals in 52 games last season, as they continue to reach an impasse in talks for Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo. ‌ Mbeumo "frustrated" over transfer delay Another player who has been left impatient over a move is United target Mbeumo, who the Red Devils have been in talks to such for much of the summer so far. United have had two bids rejected for Mbeumo, the latest being one of £62.5m - the same fee they paid for Cunha. It's understood Brentford are looking for more than £60m but want the full fee paid upfront, while United want to pay it in instalments. ‌ Mbeumo was Brentford's star player last season, netting 20 goals in the Premier League and is seen as a player who could overhaul United's fortunes. But United are yet to return with a third bid and the saga is threatening to drag out even further - causing "frustration" from Mbeumo. ‌ Cameroon coach Ashu Cyprian Besong said: 'Yes, obviously he's very frustrated with how long it's taken. But he's a professional and anticipates these things. I spoke to him about a week ago and he is very calm with everything that is going on. "But of course, he's already told them he wants to go to United. He just wanted the two clubs to find an agreement, as he's very grateful for the opportunity that he's been given by Brentford in his career."
