KTMB blames cable theft for train delays up north, plans RM12.8m prevention upgrade
KTMB in a statement said among the affected locations were the Tapah Road - Sungkai (KM250.5) route with approximately 200 metres of cable stolen, Kamunting - Bukit Merah - Bagan Serai (KM87.25) with 110 metres stolen, and Simpang Ampat - Bukit Mertajam (KM15.5) with 40 metres affected.
The incident disrupted train operations, causing significant delays of between 80 and 115 minutes involving the following services; EP9172 (KL Sentral - Butterworth), EG9321 (Butterworth - Segamat), EX9107 (Butterworth - KL Sentral), EX9207 (Padang Besar - KL Sentral), and EG9420 (Segamat - Padang Besar).
In addition, the Northern KTM Komuter service on the Ipoh - Butterworth - Ipoh route was also affected, with average delays of 30 minutes.
KTMB said early notifications of the disruptions were sent to passengers via SMS and KTMB's official social media platforms.
KTMB chief operating officer Mohd Zain Mat Taha in the same statement said 45 cases of cable theft have been recorded in the northern sector from January to May this year.
'This type of theft amounts to sabotage of railway infrastructure and could threaten the safety of hundreds of passengers while also crippling public transportation,' he said.
As a mitigation measure, KTMB announced a plan to upgrade its signalling network, involving an estimated cost of RM12.8 million annually over the next three years, with a focus on hotspot areas.
Among the planned improvements are installing manhole covers with special locking mechanisms at 21 locations, enhancing surveillance and prevention infrastructure including CCTV cameras and drones, and installing anti-climb security fencing.
Additionally, he said monitoring and patrols by KTMB Auxiliary Police with cooperation from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) would be intensified in hotspot areas to curb theft.
'We (KTMB) would like to call for the public's cooperation to report any suspicious activity to the authorities in order to combat such crime.
'We also apologise for any inconvenience experienced by passengers and remain committed to ensuring train service safety and reliability in the interest of the people and the country,' he added.
Since 2024, total losses from cable theft in the northern sector has reached RM1.44 million, comprising RM1.28 million in 2024 and RM162,000 as of March 2025. — Bernama

2 men killed in shootout with cops in Jitra

The incident happened on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) entrance road at 8.05am. Kedah police chief Fisol Salleh said policemen patrolling the area approached a four-wheel drive vehicle, with its occupants looking suspicious, and ordered it to stop, Bernama reported. 'The two men opened fire on the police vehicle. In the shootout that ensued, both were killed. 'Police found two firearms – a revolver and semi-automatic pistol – several bullets, a parang, and other tools for carrying out criminal activities in the car,' he told reporters at the scene. He said a background check on one of the men, aged 41, revealed that he had a criminal record for more than 40 offences. The identity of the other suspect was still unknown as he did not have any identification papers on him. 'We believe the two were part of a larger group commiting violent crimes across the country, including drug trafficking, gangsterism, factory break-ins and armed robberies. This gang is believed to have been active since 2020. 'The police forensic unit found three bullet casings at the scene,' he said. The bodies were sent to Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah in Alor Setar for an autopsy. The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder. Bukit Aman criminal investigation department acting director Fadil Marsus, who was also present at the scene, said the two men were believed to belong to a criminal gang that had committed serious crimes. 'We are investigating whether they were linked to a criminal group in Klang, Selangor. The group is believed to have more than 30 members,' he said.

Preacher arrested over alleged sex videos with wives, other women

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Police have arrested an independent preacher for allegedly distributing sex videos involving himself, his wives and several other women. Shah Alam police chief Iqbal Ibrahim said the man's second wife lodged a report on June 16, claiming her husband had distributed the explicit content. 'Following the report, police arrested her husband and seized two mobile phones and a laptop belonging to him. 'A forensic check conducted on the phones revealed several sex videos with his wives as well as inappropriate photos of several other women,' he said in a statement. Iqbal said the suspect was remanded for four days until today, and has since been released on police bail. The case is being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code for insulting a person's modesty, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for improper use of network facilities or services. Police are also investigating the case under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 for insulting behaviour.

Shah Alam police tracking down Pakistani national, suspected of sexually assaulting young boys
SHAH ALAM, July 5 — Police are on the hunt for a Pakistani man believed to be a suspect in four cases of sodomy and molestation involving children and teenage boys in Section 27 and Section 28 here this year. Shah Alam district police chief ACP Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said his team received four separate reports involving victims, aged nine, 13, 14, and 19 years old, regarding incidents that began in April and continue to this day, and all the incidents are believed to have been carried out by the same individual. 'The suspect's modus operandi is to initially ask for help from the victims and then take them to a secluded area before sodomising or molesting the victim. 'A total of four investigation papers have been opened, with two being investigated under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, while the other two are under Section 377C of the Penal Code,' he said in a statement today. Mohd Iqbal said the suspect Muhammad Hassan, 25, is unemployed and with his last known address being Taman Bunga Negara Flat in Section 27, Shah Alam. He said any individual with information regarding the incidents can contact Crime Investigation Officer, Inspector Siti Mahanira Mahat at 017-6444895. Previously, a WhatsApp post went viral, showing residents' concerns about a group of Pakistani nationals asking for help from children, especially boys.
