STF nabs arms dealer from Bihar with gunrunning link to Cuttack
Police said, Aslam was linked to the illegal arms unit that was busted in 42 Mouza of Cuttack earlier this year. In March, STF had nabbed the unit's kingpin Sarat Chandra Yadav and his associates Md Budhu of West Bengal along with Md Abid Husein and Md Kallu of Munger district in Bihar.
During the raid, the STF had seized huge quantities of materials for making 7 mm pistol including 29 gun parts with barrel, 14 slides, 36 grips, 15 barrels, 14 iron bars, a lathe machine with motor, a milling machine with motor, a drilling machine with motor, a grinder machine along with other tools.
'Aslam had come in contact with Budhu, Husein and Kallu when they were all lodged in Katihar jail. After they were released, Aslam procured at least 70 guns from the gunmaking unit in 42 Mouza and sold them in Bihar, West Bengal and Assam,' said STF SP, Rabindra Nath Satpathy.
During searches, STF seized huge quantity of materials used to manufacture 7 mm countrymade pistols from Aslam. He was also earlier arrested by West Bengal Police under Arms Act. 'So far, six persons have been arrested for their involvement in the illegal gun manufacturing unit at 42 Mouza. Aslam was brought to Odisha on Friday,' Satpathy said.
Police said, in the recent years, criminals have turned their attention to Odisha in terms of manufacturing firearms here as well as establishing gunrunning network from the state. Odisha too has witnessed a spurt in organised crimes and many of them were planned by hardcore criminals lodged in various jails in Bihar and later executed here by them and their accomplices, the sources said.
'Not just manufacturing of arms in Odisha and their supply from the state, criminals lodged in various Bihar jails are also planning and executing various other organised crimes here. Investigation has revealed that the attempted loot of a jewellery shop in Panikoili by a gang of armed robbers in which two citizens were shot dead and the Manappuram Gold Loan office heist in Sambalpur earlier in January were planned in Bihar's Katihar jail,' said Satpathy.
The recent crackdown will be intensified and efforts will be made to ensure criminals lodged in Bihar jails or those who walked out from there are not able to carry out organised crimes in the state, he added.

Alleged retaliation: Man shot dead in Sham Nagar
Ludhiana: A Haibowal resident was shot dead in Sham Nagar at around 11.30pm on Sunday. The man was shot in the chest at point-blank range and died on the spot. Prima facie investigation connects the murder to the Jawahar Nagar firing incident. The man who fired the gunshot in Sham Nagar is the nephew of Kanwaljit Kumar, a hotelier from Jawahar Nagar, at whose house three men fired a gunshot in the early hours of July 15. The deceased has been identified as Rohit Kumar, 24, of New Vijay Nagar in Haibowal area. Based on the statements of Rohit's father, Naresh Kumar, division number 5 police lodged an FIR against Manav of Jawahar Nagar and his unidentified accomplice on charges of murder. Naresh Kumar said that his son left the house on Sunday night, saying that he was going for some work with his friends. Later, they received information that Jawahar Nagar resident, Manav, and his aide shot him dead in Sham Nagar. Police lodged an FIR under Sections 103 (murder) of BNS and relevant sections of the Arms Act. According to a police source, Manav contacted the police on Sunday night, claiming that three men wanted to shoot him and he fired at one of them in self-defence, resulting in one person's death. An official told TOI, "Initially, Manav, nephew of Jawahar Nagar-based hotelier Kanwaljit Kumar, informed the police that he went to a fuel station near Sham Nagar on a scooter with his friend. After getting fuel, they were returning to Jawahar Nagar when they were intercepted by three men on a scooter. Manav claimed that one of them had a pistol and wanted to kill him. However, he pre-empted the attack and shot in self defence, leading to the man's death. Manav said that the attack was connected with the previous attack at their house one year ago, during which his father, Jindi, was murdered. He added that his uncle (father's brother), Kanwaljit, was to testify against the killer, Darpan, in court on July 23. Manav alleged that the assailants wanted to attack him to threaten the family and stop them from giving the testimony. "However, when police scanned CCTV cameras installed in the locality overnight, the story changed. It was found that the three men, including the deceased, Rohit, had a gun, and Manav also had a pistol. Rohit and his accomplices initially intercepted Manav, who escaped. Rohit and his two aides parked their scooter near a car and hid behind it, waiting for Manav to pass by. CCTV cameras captured Manav stopping his scooter a few steps away and walking up to the car with a pistol in hand. As soon as Manav came near the car, Rohit jumped before him with a gun but Manav shot him in the chest at point blank range before he could do anything. Thereafter, he fled," said the official. A s Rohit fell, he tried to point the gun at Manav, who was fleeing, but collapsed before he could shoot. His aides did not raise an alarm but rushed him to the civil hospital, where he was declared dead. A police official said that they were trying to ascertain the connection between the Sham Nagar and Jawahar Nagar firing incidents as well as Jindi's testimony in the murder case. Haryana Police arrests wanted criminal with Rs 5,000 bounty in Mewat
Gurugram, Jul 21 (PTI) A wanted criminal carrying a bounty of Rs 5000 and involved in multiple cases, including cow slaughter, has been arrested in Mewat district, Haryana Police said on Monday. The accused has been identified as Dilshad of Sudaka village in the district. Several severe criminal cases, including cow slaughter, are registered against Dilshad in Nuh, Palwal district and Rajasthan, police said. A case under Arms Act is also registered against the accused at the Bahin police station in Palwal district. He was declared a fugitive in that case, they said. Odisha ‘sexual harassment' case: internal complaints committee report had not recommended any punitive action
The Internal Complaints Committee, constituted under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (POSH), at F.M. Autonomous College in Balasore, Odisha, had not recommended any disciplinary action against the teacher accused of sexually harassing a student who later died after setting herself on fire. The ICC report, which recently came out in the open, said the panel did not find any conclusive evidence to substantiate the charges of sexual harassment. 'Students should strive to uphold the reputation of institutions and improve the quality of education by keeping a cordial relationship with teachers and they should not indulge in character assassination without any proof,' the report said. It said, 'Teachers should also closely study psychology of students and become compassionate in order to improve their academic growth.' The ICC, constituted under the leadership of Jayashree Mishra following allegations of sexual harassment against Samir Kumar Sahoo — Head of the Bachelor of Education department at the college, did not recommend any punitive action in its report. The student had allegedly taken the extreme step of setting herself ablaze after her repeated complaints against the teacher went unaddressed. Report contradictory The ICC report contradicted the statement of several ICC members who, after the student's death, said that they had recommended the removal of the accused teacher from his current position. However, the final ICC report made no mention of any transfer or removal of the teacher from the post of department head. The girl student's family members and friends and members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) — of which she was a member — alleged that even a temporary transfer or asking the accused teacher to go on leave, after her complaints, could have eased tensions and possibly prevented the tragedy. They further said that Sahoo influenced the outcome of the ICC inquiry by continuing in his role during the investigation. The report said that the ICC conducted a five-day-long investigation and recorded the statements of the student, her father, 60 other students and college teachers. Binaytosh Mishra, Director General of Police (Crime Branch), said there were discrepancies in the statements given by individuals connected to the case before and after the girl's death. He added that the Crime Branch, which is investigating into the incident, has gathered several key pieces of evidence and that the progress of the probe has been satisfactory.
