UP drone vigil turns tragic: Teen shot dead by friend showing off illegal pistol; UAF rumours sparked night patrols

MEERUT: A 16-year-old boy was accidentally shot dead by a friend during an anti-drone vigilante patrol in Puthi village in Meerut on Tuesday. The patrol, formed by villagers amid panic over suspected UAV sightings across western UP, ended in tragedy when the accused accidentally fired the illegal pistol he was showing off. There were no drone sightings that night, and the victim, Rohit Kumar , was not involved in any drone-related activity, officials said. Rohit was part of a four-member group of youths taking turns to patrol the area after rumours of drone-based reconnaissance for robberies spread across western UP. Around 4am, he and Mayank Kumar, 20, stepped aside for a smoke when Mayank allegedly pulled out his pistol to show off. During this, he accidentally pulled the trigger. Meerut (rural) SP Rakesh Kumar Mishra told TOI: "The accused and the victim were smoking when Mayank took out his illegal firearm to show off. During this, he accidentally pulled the trigger. The bullet hit the boy's back, killing him on the spot." Mayank called the others in the group and alerted the victim's family. The boy was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. An FIR was filed at Parikshitgarh police station against Mayank under BNS section 103 (murder) and relevant sections of Arms Act. "Mayank has been jailed. We are probing how he acquired the illegal weapon," added Mishra.

Person with ‘clean antecedents' needed for lambardar's post: HC

Chandigarh: Emphasising that it is desirable to appoint a person with a "clean image and antecedents" as a lambardar, the Punjab and Haryana high court dismissed a petition challenging the appointment of a person who was recommended to be appointed as lambardar of a village in Fatehabad district by Haryana's financial commissioner. Justice Harsh Bunger passed these orders while dismissing a petition filed by Amrinder Singh. He sought directions to set aside the order dated Feb 15, 2023, passed by the financial commissioner. The facts of the post of lambardar in Kamana village fell vacant on account of the demise of the previous lambardar, Labh Singh. For this post, petitioner Amarinder Singh and one Jagpal Singh applied. The tehsildar, Ratia, recommended the name of Jagpal, whereas Ratia SDM recommended the petitioner's name for appointment. The matter was referred to the collector, Fatehabad, who, on March 26, 2013, appointed Amarinder as lambardar. Aggrieved by this, Jagpal challenged the matter in the financial commissioner's office, which on Feb 15, 2023, ordered to appoint Jagpal as lambardar. The matter reached the high court in the wake of a petition filed by Amarinder challenging the financial commissioner's order. He contended that in the matter of appointment of lambardar, the choice of the collector should not be lightly interfered with, even if two views are possible. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search Ads Search Now Undo It was contended that the petitioner is more meritorious and suitable for the appointment as lambardar, as he is younger in age, sufficiently educated, and has a landholding of more than six acres. He was also recommended by the SDM. It was also contended that the petitioner is the grandson of the previous lambardar and aware of the job. However, the counsel for Jagpal, senior advocate Mohal Jain, submitted that he is more educated and also possesses more landholdings than the petitioner. It was submitted that the petitioner does not have clean antecedents as he was involved in two FIRs in criminal matters registered under the IPC and Arms Act. The petitioner, however, claimed that the FIRs were registered against him after the collector appointed him the lambardar. After hearing all parties, the court observed that the conduct of the lambardar had to be above board and considering the fact that the petitioner was involved in two criminal cases, out of which one FIR was registered under section 307 of IPC (attempt to murder) and other sections of the Arms Act, it was doubtful the villagers would repose faith in him. "Considering the totality of circumstances, I am of the considered view that when the petitioner was involved in two criminal cases, although he was acquitted later on, even then it is always desirable to appoint a person with a clean image and antecedents as lambardar. Accordingly, the financial commissioner, Haryana, has rightly appointed Jagpal as lambardar of Kamana village by keeping in view his better merits," the HC held in its order.
