Time of India4 hours ago

Thane: A Thane court has acquitted a 57-year-old woman accused in a 10-year-old case of flesh trade that involved
women trafficking
and pushing them into prostitution. The prosecution told the court that the police's anti-human trafficking cell had raided an apartment at Savarkar Nagar in February 2015, arresting the accused after sending a decoy customer.
The police also rescued three women who were pushed into the trade. The accused was booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 370 (trafficking of persons) and provision of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act.
The judge noted the decoy and victims were not examined by the prosecution. According to the court, the victims were not traceable and the decoy did not turn up despite summons. The prosecution failed to comply with the order of January 31, 2025, that asked them to arrange for the witnesses for deposition and were unable to prove the charges levelled against the accused. The court now considers this a closed case. PTI

State govt to launch massive anti-drug campaign shorty: Himachal CM Sukhu

Shimla (Himachal) [India], June 30 (ANI): In a bid to raise awareness against drug abuse, the Himachal Pradesh Police Department organised the 12th State Police Half Marathon in Shimla, an official statement said. Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Sunday felicitated the winners of the marathon, which featured participation in men's, women's, and senior citizens' categories. Addressing the gathering on the occasion, the Chief Minister expressed serious concern over the involvement of government employees in drug-related activities. He said that strict action has already been taken against 80 government employees facing legal proceedings so far. He said even police personnel have been found involved in drug trafficking activities and added that the state government is considering amending the Police Manual to ensure greater accountability within the force, the release added. The Chief Minister said that the government is preparing to launch a large-scale anti-drug campaign in the near future. 'Mapping is being conducted at the panchayat ward level to facilitate targeted intervention,' he stated. The government is also forming a Special Task Force to clamp down on drug trafficking and recruitment process is already underway. Additionally, 500 new posts will be filled in the Police department to strengthen enforcement efforts, he added. 'Youth are the future of our nation, and protecting them from the menace of drugs is a collective responsibility,' said the Chief Minister, reiterating the government's policy of zero tolerance towards drug abuse. The CM stated that the state is working on a two-pronged strategy, strict enforcement and a sensitive approach towards victims. The present government has implemented the PIT-NDPS Act, which was not enforced during the previous BJP government's five-year tenure. Under this Act, 40 detention orders have been approved, 36 of which were issued this year. The government has also demolished properties belonging to seven drug peddlers and is actively pursuing action against others, he added. Furthermore, CM Sukhu said the state has passed the HP Anti-Drugs Act, which distinguishes between offenders and victims. The law adopts a rehabilitative approach towards drug users, aiming to bring them back into the mainstream of society. He urged parents to maintain open communication with their children and educate them about the harmful effects of drugs. He called upon all sections of society to actively participate in the anti-drug campaign to safeguard the future of the youth, the statement said. As part of the awareness drive, the Chief Minister also released a special song of 'Harmony of the Pines' dedicated to the anti-drug campaign. MLA Harish Janartha, Mayor Surender Chauhan, Principal Media Advisor to the CM Naresh Chauhan, Additional Chief Secretary KK Pant, DGP Ashok Tiwari, senior police officers and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion. Minor missing for 642 days found with hubby & baby

Nagpur: A 16-year-old girl, who vanished from her home in September 2023, was found after 642 days by the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of Nagpur police. In a dramatic turn, the girl was found in Butibori, not only married to the boy (now 24-year-old) she eloped with, but also mother to a six-month-old child. The girl, a Class X student when she disappeared, had fallen in love with a labourer working near her residence in the MIDC area. Her family came to know about their relationship and was planning to shift her to a relative's house to separate them. Fearing permanent separation, the couple eloped. "They first moved to Rajasthan, where the boy worked earlier, and stayed there for nearly one-and-a-half years and also got married. Later, they relocated to Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh, the boy's hometown," said Senior PI Lalita Todase of AHTU. She added that a police team tracked them down to Jaunpur, but the couple coincidentally left the town the same morning the team reached. According to Todase, the girl frequently changed phone numbers and used multiple Instagram accounts to stay off the radar. "She was active on social media, which eventually helped us trace her location. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo After extensive surveillance, we finally tracked her to a rented house in Sukali village, Butibori," she said. On Saturday, AHTU officers raided the house and found the girl living with the boy and their infant son. She was immediately taken into protective custody, counselled, and later handed over to MIDC police for further action. PSI Santosh Khandekar, the investigating officer from MIDC police station, confirmed that a case was registered against the boy. "He has been detained, and a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act is being initiated, as the girl was a minor at the time of abduction and marriage," he said. Police officials added that the girl is currently staying at a govt hostel along with her infant son, as her family has refused to take her back. The operation was carried out under the leadership of DCP (Detection) Rahul Maknikar, and Additional Police Commissioner Abhijit Patil. Police say the case highlights the need for vigilant monitoring of missing minors, especially in cases where romantic exploitation or trafficking may be involved.

Lapses in handling rescued girls: HC seeks police reply

New Delhi: Delhi High Court has sought the stand of police on a plea that has alleged lapses in the handling and safety of girls rescued from being exploited sexually in a racket in the capital. The plea alleged that the authorities did not ensure the proper transfer of custody of the girls who were rescued by NGOs. In a recent hearing, Justice Ravinder Dudeja issued a notice to Delhi Police and other agencies while hearing a plea filed by two organisations. The court asked the authorities to file status reports explaining their stand on the matter within four weeks and posted it for further hearing on July 17. The petition filed by the NGOs, among them Just Rights for Children Alliance, sought action against the authorities for the alleged grave lapses in handling the custody of the girls rescued from a sexual exploitation racket. The plea said that in Dec last year, the petitioners assisted the police in conducting raids to rescue the girls from the organised racket being run by gangs in the Burari area. However, the police, it was alleged, failed to produce the girls before the Child Welfare Committee even though it is laid down in the law. The lapse resulted in a violation of the juvenile and anti-trafficking laws. The plea said the action of releasing the rescued girls without producing them before the Child Welfare Committee violated the constitutional guarantee and mandatory provisions under the JJ Act and Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, and this violation may result in the re-trafficking of the girls. The petitioners took up the issue with the senior police officials, including the joint commissioner of police, but it did not translate into action. In 2017, Supreme Court expanded the definition of the term "child in need of care and protection" under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, to include child victims of sexual abuse, sexual assault and sexual harassment. Such children must also be given protection under the provisions of the JJ Act, being victims of crime also under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956, it observed, laying down norms for their rescue and rehabilitation.
