Expat exposes the one major difference between supermarkets in Australia and the UK that makes Aussies 'spend more' at the register

An expat has identified one major difference between supermarkets in Australia and those in the UK that makes shoppers Down Under "spend more". Gemma Penn recently took to TikTok to point out supermarkets Down Under always have "banging music, whether it's Coles or Woolworths." In a video taken while shopping, she expressed surprise at having heard British singer Jamelia and the Spice Girls while browsing the store aisles. For most Australians, dance music is just background noise that people have become accustomed to hearing while doing their grocery shopping. However, Gemma, who is still getting used to the novelty, said the pop anthems and dance tracks are "for sure" making her spend more money. One viewer took to the comments to say the tunes, like pop musician Endor's 'Pump It Up', which Woolies plays every day at 3 pm, are merely a "subtle mind game" to make shoppers reach deeper into their pockets. Deakin University's Professor of Consumer Behaviour and Marketing, Paul Harrison, weighed in on whether music really does influence spending. "At a basic level, what we know is that faster music means that people move through shops faster," Mr Harrison told Yahoo Lifestyle. "The one thing that they have found is that more upbeat music does get people to spend more on premium items. "So, an example might be, if you're in a supermarket and you hear sophisticated music, you're more likely to be drawn towards buying the more sophisticated version of a brand." Mr Harrison referenced research from one of his students a couple of years ago, which found there is an ideal "Goldilocks moment" in-store. He said retailers want people in and out within "about 20 minutes", and the faster music helps achieve that magic target, in which people spend more dollars per minute than if they were to stay for 30, 40 or 50 minutes. Mr Harrison said the 20-minute time frame doesn't, however, actually push people to stretch their budget beyond capacity. Rather, it encourages people to buy items within their means that they may have been otherwise resistant to add to the cart. It comes as an Australian Competition and Consumer Commission inquiry into the Australian grocery sector in March found Coles and Woolworths are among the most profitable supermarket businesses in the world. The inquiry found supermarket giants are using promotions to make it harder for customers to judge whether they are getting a good deal, and Coles and Woolworths' dominance of the sector seems set to continue. Woolworths and IGA meanwhile emerged as the two most expensive supermarkets to shop from, while grocery prices have slightly dropped at Coles, a survey by consumer advocacy group CHOICE revealed. has contacted Coles and Woolworths for comment.

Footage surfaces of Dave Franco, Alison Brie's ‘nasty' public act

Don't miss out on the headlines from Celebrity Life. Followed categories will be added to My News. Alison Brie and Dave Franco might be taking togetherness a step too far. Footage of Brie cutting Franco's toenails while sitting on a picnic blanket in Griffith Park in Los Angeles surfaced on social media on Tuesday — and fans had plenty of thoughts. The Community actress was seen discarding her husband's toenails in the grass, as he scrolled through his phone looking completely unbothered, per Page Six. While some were grossed out, others speculated it might just be promotion for their new horror flick, Together, in which they play a co-dependent couple. 'They're both comedians. They tend to do stuff like this, the cameraman is probably even with them,' one Reddit commenter wrote. 'This is probably staged, and if it's not, the person filming is a lot weirder than they are,' another chimed in. 'This got to be for the new movie cuz why else would they be doing this in public?' a third speculated. Franco and Brie at the SAG Awards in 2018. Picture: Frederick M. 'Yeah that's nasty Alison,' one user reacted via X, while another commented, 'Doing this for a man in private is also wild …' Another user chimed in, 'TMI. Some things don't need to be shared on here man.' Brie, 42, and Franco, 40, have already made waves with the promo for Together, a supernatural horror film they starred in and produced. They've worked together multiple times on films. Picture: Instagram On Monday, Neon Films posted a picture on Instagram of the two intimately kissing in front of a billboard of their characters kissing in the film, encouraging people to take similar photos. 'The perfect couple in 'the perfect date night horror movie,'' the caption reads in part. Brie and Franco have been married since March 2017 and have worked together multiple times. She previously talked about what it was like having her husband direct her sex scenes with Jay Ellis in the movie Somebody I Used to Know. 'I realise that it sounds wild, but we are actors, this is our job,' she told Jezebel. 'It's actually not that weird. And with something like this, because it's our baby that we made together, I think our first priority is always just the movie.' Fresh drama after secret royal peace talks

Don't miss out on the headlines from Royals. Followed categories will be added to My News. IN LONDON Shortly after details of secret talks between Prince Harry and King Charles' senior aides emerged, the delicate push toward reconciliation has already hit a snag. The UK's Telegraph reports that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's team is frustrated that the story, which included quotes from a source and pictures of the sensitive meeting, leaked so quickly to The Mail on Sunday. A huge factor in the years-long rift between both camps has been mutual distrust – and having specific details of the private conversation between Tobyn Andrae, the King's communications secretary, Harry's new chief communications officer, Meredith Maines, and his UK-based publicist, Liam Maguire, picked up by the press almost immediately has done nothing to help the situation. According to the Telegraph, sources insisted that Harry's camp was not responsible for the leak, despite suspicions. Buckingham Palace has declined to comment on the matter. In the initial story, published on Sunday, a source told the Mail: 'There's a long road ahead, but a channel of communication is now open for the first time in years. There was no formal agenda, just casual drinks. There were things both sides wanted to talk about.' Senior aides for both Harry and the King met up recently. Picture: Samir Hussein/Samir Hussein/WireImage It came after a period of increasingly hostile relations between the US-based Sussexes and the Palace, following the release of a series of personal – and unflattering – details about the couple's issues during their time as working royals. As a result, senior royals had become 'wary' of speaking to either Harry or Meghan over concerns details would be used in future projects, as had occurred with their Netflix series and the duke's memoir, Spare. For his part, one of Harry's main gripes about life within the monarchy was his allegation that members of his family were leaking stories about each other to the press. Meanwhile, after the 'peace summit' over the weekend, it's now been reported that Harry could potentially meet with the King in just a matter of weeks. In May, he had confirmed he and his father were no longer on speaking terms, marking a sad new development in what's been a turbulent few years in their relationship. The conversations did not include any suggestion that Harry would 'make a royal return'. Picture: Tolga Akmen/AFP The Sun's royal editor Matt Wilkinson reports that Harry '[gave] his blessing' for the casual meeting, which was centred around ways to finally reconcile family issues, although he added that 'a proposal for Harry to make a royal return was not on the agenda'. It's unclear which side reached out first to book the catch-up, and it's understood no-one from Prince William's team was present. In September, Harry is expected to return to the UK to attend the annual WellChild Awards, of which he is patron, providing a potential opportunity for the pair to meet in person for the first time in 18 months. They last saw each other back in early 2024, when Harry made a quick dash back to London to see his father shortly after he revealed his cancer diagnosis. If Harry and the King arrange a reunion, it would mark a significant turning point in the ongoing feud between the duke and the royal family, which was sparked before Harry and Meghan sensationally quit official duties and moved to the US. September is already set to be a big month for the royals, with the announcement on Monday that they will be hosting US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump on a state visit.
