We're finally here, Collectors. Fanatics Fest Week.
Heading to NYC for the show? Check out Yahoo Sports' primer on what to expect from Michael Rubin and team this year. And don't forget to stop by Bleecker Trading to hang with the Mantel crew. We'll be there after the show every day, with a packed schedule of events , giveaways, authentic NYC pizza… everything you'll need.
We can't talk about Fanatics Fest without talking about the engine driving Fanatics' push to dominate the sports and collectible businesses: Michael Rubin. The Fanatics founder and CEO's rise offers a masterclass in strategic evolution, risk tolerance, and obsessive focus on customer value. As described in Boardroom's cover story article and video, Rubin sees Fanatics not as an empire, but a 22,000-person startup, still just getting started.
Regular readers of these pages are probably pretty aware of the love we have for Bleecker Trading, an NYC hobby shop that puts culture and community at the forefront of everything they do. With Mantel hitting the Big Apple, deciding where we wanted to post up was a no-brainer, and for Yahoo Sports, we wanted to take readers behind the scenes at the shop. I also had the pleasure of joining Bleecker honcho Mark Zablow on The Hobby With Cage , so give the article a read, the video a watch , and then come hang with us at the shop this week if you're in town.
At this point you've probably heard of Labubu, the cute/creepy dolls that have taken over the world over the last few weeks. (If you are unfamiliar, check out this piece from NPR , which explains the toy's origins). We also enjoyed the video below from the Wall Street Journal, which showcases how the store behind the phenomenon, Pop Mart, has made the dolls go viral, and as a result, is now minting money. Are Labubu dolls here to stay, or just this year's Furby ?
In a heart-warming twist of hobby fate, a Caitlin Clark 2024 Panini Prizm WNBA Black Finite 1/1 rookie card, graded PSA 9, sold for $274,500 via Goldin Auctions just months after a collector landed it for $27 in a Whatnot stream. The card is now the most valuable non-autographed Clark card ever sold, and the second-priciest overall behind her $366K Gold Vinyl auto. Kudos to the seller, Valerie Coleman, for turning her windfall into a good cause, with her pledge to match up to $50K in donations collectors make to animal rescues.
One of only four known Ceratosaurus skeletons, and the only juvenile, is hitting the auction block at Sotheby's on July 16. Measuring over 10 feet long with a complete skull and razor-sharp teeth, the fossil stands mounted in a dramatic, roaring pose. Originally unearthed in Wyoming and once housed at Utah's Museum of Ancient Life, the specimen is estimated to bring in $4-6M at the sale, a huge number, though still tiny in comparison to the Stegosaurus 'Apex' , which sold for $44.6M back in 2022. Not all are thrilled, by the way, that fossils once destined for museums and scientific research, are ending up in private collections through these auctions.
Another week, another Mantel update. Yesterday we launched new features including Streaks, Polls and better image display tools (including zoom). Not on Mantel yet? AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH Trailer Teases Fiery Battles, Evil Na'vi, and Jake Sully's Next Fight — GeekTyrant

James Cameron has finally lifted the curtain on Avatar: Fire and Ash , and it looks like it's going to deliver another epic story. The first trailer for the third Avatar film is going to be visually spectacular, and the story is going to dive headfirst into darker, more emotionally charged territory. The film brings back Jake Sully and Neytiri as they rally their family and allies against a new Na'vi threat: the Ash People. These fearsome, soot-covered warriors are introduced in the trailer dancing around a blazing fire pit, setting the tone for a movie that leans into chaos, destruction, and rising tension between the clans. 'You'll see a lot more Pandora that you never saw before,' Cameron previously said at D23. 'It's an insane adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it's also got very high emotional stakes, more than ever before. We're going into really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love.' Oona Chaplin makes her debut as Varang, the Ash People's commanding and ominous leader. The trailer shows her raining fire down on Pandora's lush forests, with her clan now allied with Stephen Lang's returning villain, Quaritch. As expected, the visuals are jaw-dropping, blending Pandora's familiar beauty with new volcanic landscapes and explosive fire sequences. The Ash People's aesthetic is a stark contrast to the oceanic Metkayina from The Way of Water , and Cameron has hinted that their aggression and ambition outmatch anything we've seen before. 'There are new characters, one especially I think you're gonna love, or love to hate,' he teased. The returning cast includes Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, Edie Falco, and Dileep Rao, along with younger actors like Britain Dalton, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Jack Champion, and Bailey Bass. New faces joining the fight include Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis. The Way of Water and Fire and Ash were originally written as one massive film, but Cameron split them after realizing the story needed more room to breathe. The result is a saga that grows in scope with each chapter while pushing its characters into darker, more complex emotional territory. There's no doubt that Fire and Ash will raise the stakes for Jake Sully's family and expand the mythology of Pandora in bold new ways. The movie is set for release on December 19, 2025.

Star Trek, superheroes, and lots of Stephen King: the best of SDCC 2025

Another San Diego Comic-Con has come and gone, and while there were no explosive reveals like last year's surprise appearance of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, there were quite a few interesting developments. That includes several Star Trek spinoffs, a new sci-fi show on Apple TV Plus, trailers for everything from Peacemaker to Gen V, and a surprising amount of Stephen King. Here's everything notable that you might have missed. We've got our first look at Nickelodeon's newest entry in the animated Avatar franchise, and while Seven Havens doesn't have a firm release date just yet, we now know that Pavi (the new Earthbending Avatar) is good friends with a cat / lemur hybrid. Writer / director Juan Meza-León's upcoming animated feature for DC Studios reimagines the Dark Knight as an Aztec warrior whose life is turned upside down when his father is murdered by Spanish conquistadors. If it's anything like Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League, Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires is going to be wild, and after it hits HBO Max on September 18th, we're probably going to be seeing a lot of fan art of these inspired costumes. The feel-good story of this formerly canceled movie continues. We already knew it was coming to theaters next year, and now there's a specific date: August 28th. The kids are not alright in the new trailer for Gen V's upcoming second season. But when the show returns on September 17th, Marie (Jaz Sinclair) and her friends are going to be on a mission that forces them all to level up and become the kind of superheroes that might be able to take down Homelander. No one in their right mind would ever move to Derry, Maine, if they knew what kind of monster was lurking in the town's shadows. But everyone in the new trailer for HBO's It prequel is pretty clueless about Pennywise, who seems like he's going to be eating very well when the show premieres later this year. When The Long Walk was first published in 1979, the idea of people entering a deadly walking competition in hopes of winning a prize probably seemed much more far-fetched. But everything about Lionsgate's new adaptation that's premiering on September 12th feels unsettlingly plausible given the state of the world in 2025. There wasn't much Star Wars presence at Comic Con, but we did at least get the first still image from this Darth Maul animated series coming to Disney Plus next year. As an added bonus, Lucasfilm also showed off a new image from the second season of Ahsoka. Now that Superman has become a headliner in DC Studios' new cinematic universe, HBO Max's Peacemaker series looks like it's stepping its game up and getting much weirder in its second season due out on August 21st. Apple's run of science fiction doesn't appear to be slowing down with the reveal of Pluribus from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan. While the teaser doesn't reveal much, we at least know it'll start streaming on November 7th. The gang is back together (again) in this side-scrolling beat-'em-up from the team behind Shredder's Revenge. The latest trailer focuses on the gameplay and is full of some great Anamanaguchi tracks. The Rick and Morty cinematic universe is growing, as Adult Swim announced a spinoff called President Curtis, which will see Keith David reprise the titular role as he deals with everything from 'interdimensional diplomacy to paranormal investigations and unexplained phenomena.' No word on when it will air. Another Star Trek spinoff is coming to Paramount Plus, but this one focuses on a fresh cast of recruits at the academy in a futuristic San Francisco. There's no date yet, but it'll be streaming in 2026. While season 3 is currently airing, Paramount provided a surprise glimpse at the upcoming fourth (and penultimate) season of the show. It's surprising because, well, there's a muppet. AMC's other Anne Rice adaptations have yet to have any significant overlap. But the network's upcoming series about an organization of humans keeping an eye on the supernatural world seems like it's going to change all of that when it premieres on October 26th. Lestat (Sam Reid) is going on tour in the third season of AMC's Interview With the Vampire series, and it seems like he's doing everything in his power to reveal the existence of his kind to the human world Posts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.
