European shares settle lower as investors gauge mixed earnings, EU-US trade progress
STOXX closed 0.2% lower as most regional bourses declined, yet still aimed for modest weekly progress. (EPA Images pic) BRUSSELS : European shares closed lower on Friday, as investors assessed mixed corporate earnings while awaiting updates on a framework of an EU-US trade deal that officials said could be reached as early as this weekend. Investors navigated the peaks and troughs around a potential agreement between the two large economies after a busy week of trade discussions with the US culminated in deals with Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines. The pan-European STOXX 600 index dropped 0.6% to session lows after US President Donald Trump said there was less chance of an agreement with the EU but pared losses after EU diplomats reiterated that a deal of 15% duties on European goods was still in the works. The index last closed 0.2% lower with most regional bourses in red, but on a weekly basis, the STOXX index was on track for modest gains. 'It's hard to spin it as a good deal, but it would at least avoid much higher US tariffs and retaliation from the EU,' said Jack Allen-Reynolds, deputy chief eurozone economist at Capital Economics. 'The reported deal with the US would take a major downside risk off the table for now, weakening the case for further interest rate cuts.' Also weighing on stocks were elevated bond yields that got a lift after the European Central Bank's comments on Thursday tempered expectations of imminent interest rate cuts. Meanwhile, corporate earnings were in full swing. Puma was the biggest percentage loser on the benchmark index, falling 16%, its largest daily drop in more than four months. The sportswear brand cut its full-year outlook and reported weaker-than-expected quarterly results. London-listed sports retailer JD Sports slipped 0.7% after Puma's results. On the flip side, LVMH gained 3.9% after the French luxury group reported quarterly results, with analysts pointing to hopes on the horizon as the group said it saw signs of recovery in the Chinese market. The broader luxury index rose 1.8% and was the top sectoral performer. Automobile stocks gained 1.4%, boosted by Volkswagen's 4.6% rise after the CEO of Europe's biggest carmaker said cost cuts must be accelerated in response to tariffs. Earlier in the session, shares took a hit on the company's slashed full-year sales and profit margin forecasts. Still, Traton, a truck unit of German automaker Volkswagen, fell 4.1%. Carrefour gained 5.5% after Europe's biggest food retailer reported its half-year results. Attention next week will turn to key events, including policy decisions from the Federal Reserve, earnings from several 'Magnificent Seven' companies, and Trump's Aug 1 tariff deadline.

Bukit Aman targets businesses laundering drug money, plans tighter licensing and asset seizures
KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 — The federal police are reportedly looking to intensify efforts to identify legitimate businesses being used to launder money by drug syndicates. Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the trend had been uncovered through previous arrests. 'This was discovered in several past arrests,' the former Selangor police chief was quoted telling Harian Metro. 'We use a money trail approach to ensure the assets seized in drug busts can be traced, forfeited, and disposed of under existing legal provisions.' He said proposals to close existing loopholes include more stringent licensing through background checks of business owners. Other measures include monitoring financial transactions in cooperation with Bank Negara Malaysia and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to detect suspicious flows. The NCID is also looking at tighter surveillance of e-commerce platforms and improving inter-agency data sharing. Hussein said efforts to curb cross-border drug trafficking will focus on dismantling syndicates operating at the Malaysia-Thai border. These will involve enforcement actions under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act and seizure of syndicate assets. 'We aim to cripple the syndicates financially through the seizure of property, assets, and cash,' he reportedly said.

Customer harassed after complaint leaked, Tealive says sorry and promises to punish those involved (VIDEO)
KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 — Local bubble tea brand Tealive has apologised after a customer's personal information was leaked, allegedly leading to harassment by store staff. The incident came to light after content creator Iman Kamil posted a video on Instagram yesterday detailing his experience. In the video, Iman said he had submitted a formal complaint to Tealive headquarters after a poor experience at one of its outlets here. He later claimed to have received a series of text messages from a purported staff member who appeared to have accessed his original complaint. Iman said the person not only contacted him directly but also called him 'a very bad person' for lodging the complaint. 'Right now I just want to know, how did the Tealive HQ easily leak the customer information who has made a report directly to them in the first place? 'It's not like I posted (my complaints) on my social media or anything' he said in the video. The video has since gone viral, with over a million views on Instagram. In response, Tealive issued a statement on its social media pages, acknowledging the incident and offering an apology. The company said the complaint was passed to an area manager for follow-up action. 'Unfortunately, during this process, a screenshot of the feedback which contains customer's contact information was inadvertently shared with the outlet team which led to staff members then reaching out to the customer directly,' Tealive said. 'Such conduct is a violation of our Standard Operating Procedures and does not reflect the values we uphold as a brand.' Tealive said it considers the matter an isolated case and is taking steps to prevent a recurrence. These include an immediate review of internal procedures, ongoing staff training on privacy and customer care, and a full inquiry into the conduct of the staff involved. The company added that appropriate disciplinary action will follow the internal investigation. In an update via Instagram Story, Iman said he does not consider the issue resolved. He insisted Tealive must bring forward the staff responsible for the harassment and arrange a meeting with him. Malay Mail has contacted Iman for further comment but has yet to receive a response.
