Hours a year Brits spending waiting for friends - with summer the worst
Brits rack up over 16 hours a year twiddling their thumbs waiting for their late friends to show up at social gatherings. Despite two-thirds of us favouring summer as prime socialising season, it also means more time spent waiting around for friends to turn up.
Three quarters of Brits have a friend who is 'always' late – with a fifth having to wait an hour or more beyond their agreed meeting time for their friend to turn up, typically chasing them up after 19 minutes to get an estimated time of arrival by sending a simple 'where are you?' message.
Many kill the wait time thumbing through their mobiles, swiping through social feeds, brushing up on the latest news or scanning emails. Consequently, nearly half admit they've drained their phone battery while waiting for their friends to arrive.
To help, Vodafone, which commissioned the research, has unveiled gigantic 'Wait for a Mate' stations across the nation, so people have a comfy place to hole up and recharge their phones while they await their friends this summer.
Broadcaster Roman Kemp, testing the seat out in central London, said: "With my mates, I'm definitely the early bird.
"I find I can use the time to catch up on a bit of life admin - aka check the football scores."
'Where are you?' is the most popular text by 35 percent of those sitting around waiting for their friend.
Meanwhile, 17 percent employ a breezier tone with "Can't wait to see you!", while another 16 percent opt for bluntness, sending a simple "hurry up".
While waiting for their mate, two thirds seek out a comfy spot to sit and 10 percent hunt for a place to power up their mobile.
However, late friends aren't always the culprits as 28 per cent admitted they intentionally arrive early – with 57 per cent doing so to ensure they locate the meeting point on time and one in 10 just too eager to catch up with mates.
One in 10 of those surveyed, via OnePoll, even seize the chance of being early to sort out their life admin, like settling bills or responding to emails.

Lewis Hamilton reveals the one thing he doesn't miss since Ferrari Formula One switch
Lewis Hamilton reveals the one thing he doesn't miss since Ferrari Formula One switch The seven-time Formula One world champion got used to working with a largely British garage when driving for McLaren and Mercedes (Image: Getty Images ) Sir Lewis Hamilton experienced a massive culture shock when he moved to Formula One team Ferrari - although he is happy he no longer has to endure the smell of curry on race days. The seven-time Formula One world champion got used to working with a largely British garage when driving for McLaren and Mercedes before making the switch to Ferrari in 2025, for which he now spends most of his time in Maranello, Italy. Lewis, 40, admits the culture is totally different with his Italian team making time for a lengthy lunch each day, but one thing he doesn't miss is the strong smell of spices and garlic on a Sunday morning, which was what would enter his nostrils because his British technical team and mechanics would always go for a curry on a Saturday night before race day. Ahead of the British Grand Prix this Sunday (06.07.25), Lewis made an appearance in London week to mark the grand opening of The House of Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0 and spilled about how his life has changed since becoming a Scuderia Ferrari HP driver to Nick Grimshaw. He said: "The Brits loved curry, my British team they would always have a curry so like on Sunday morning when they'd come into the race they'd literally stink, they all smelled of curry in the morning, garlic was just in our engineering room all the time. "They weren't passionate about food otherwise. Italians? Oh my God. There's literally a scheduled time in the day, lunch they can never, ever miss. Article continues below "Sometimes I go into the garage to talk to my mechanics, I'm like, where is everyone? They're at lunch. "I think they're the only team that does that!" Lewis has won the British Grand Prix nine times and been on the race's podium 11 times throughout his illustrious career. And despite having zero podium places so far out of the 11 races this season, Lewis is hoping for a "strong result" at his beloved Silverstone track. Speaking at a media day on Thursday (03.07.25), he optimistically said: "There is always magic here at Silverstone. "It is a very, very special race, and I am hoping all sorts of things can help us. I am hoping and praying. "I cannot wait for Friday. Driving a Ferrari at Silverstone for the first time will be special and unique in its own way. We have the best fans here, and for a British driver, they really do make a difference." Following Lewis launching The House of Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0, the attraction is open until July 5 and features a full schedule of immersive fan experiences with highlights including a pizza masterclass with 50 Top Pizza Europa no.1 Pizza Chef Michele Pascarella, and a cocktail-making workshop hosted by award-winning mixologist Federico Riezzo. Here, guests can learn to create pizzas and drinks inspired by Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. The House of Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0 is located at The Stables, Covent Garden. 'I went to Benidorm and was floored after noticing detail about bar'
A woman who went to Benidorm decided to test out its nightlife with her mum and sisters, and said she had the 'best time' at a legendary club after noticing one detail A woman was so taken aback by the bustling nightlife of Benidorm during a family trip that she took to social media to share her surprise afterwards. Ebony Crawford posted a TikTok video from her night out at the Spanish city's Insomnia nightclub, expressing her astonishment at how crowded the club was - even at 5am. "The best time in Benidorm, 5am in Insomnia," she captioned her post, highlighting the vibrant party scene. The footage showed the venue brimming with partygoers dancing to the latest hits. Ebony continued to share her Spanish escapade in Alicante with another video, where she reiterated she'd had the "best time ever" with her mum and sisters. Ebony also treated followers to a tour of the Hotel Gold Arcos - where she was staying - including its culinary offerings, which included classic British fare alongside traditional continental dishes. She also shared a peek at her room, boasting a breath-taking view of the sea and nearby tourist attractions. One TikTok user reminisced about their stay at the same hotel: "Amazing hotel, stayed there last October," Another concurred, commenting: "Its such a beautiful hotel isnt it Ebs." In a much more cautionary tale, another Brit holidaying in Benidorm - known as @harrytokky on TikTok - warned fellow travellers about potential "fake taxis" in the area. Harry said these could be "random strangers' cars" and by getting into them, you run the risk of not reaching your desired destination safely. In his video, he said that "in Benidorm there's only one type of taxi that you should be getting into," and they are "white cars with a blue stripe down the middle". He assured that these are the taxis that will "take you to your destination nice and safe," in contrast to the "fake" ones. Harry advised: "So guys, if you're coming out to Benidorm, they are the only taxis that you should be looking out for, because you don't want to get into some random stranger's car." Elsewhere, holidaying Brits have also been warned about a new "scam" said to be sweeping the region. Businessman Frank the Stag Man, who moved to the Mediterranean coast 13 years ago, said fraudsters have a new trick that you "probably won't be aware of." In a video recorded on the streets of Benidorm, Frank pointed out a number of people holding clipboards approaching passers-by. After turning down the opportunity to fill out a "petition" himself, he explained: "As you've seen there, this is one of the scams that runs along the beachfront." But how does it work? Frank claimed that holidaymakers are asked to sign petitions which, once completed, allow scammers to push their victim into making a donation. His partner interjected, stating: "They'll say it's for the blind or the disabled and that they are petitioning to get something sorted here in Spain." However, she slammed: "It's full of a load of rubbish and illegal to do this here in Spain." Frank added: "They're illegal, scamming, and they will take your money. Some people even get their wallets out and give them a few quid."

Oasis fan who spent £22k on Cardiff tour sparks brutal response
A dad from California admitted he spent $30k to see Noel and Liam Gallagher reunite as iconic band Oasis for the first time in over a decade in Cardiff tonight An Oasis superfan sparked backlash online after revealing he spent a staggering $30,000 (£22,000) to fly his family from California to Cardiff for the band's reunion show. The Gallagher brothers' return to the stage together has created a frenzy among fans across the globe, but few have gone quite as far as this American family, who stunned Brits on social media with their dedication to the band. A roving reporter on Good Morning Britain introduced the group live from inside a shopping centre, declaring: "This couple flew in from California. The total cost for flights, hotels, and VIP tickets for the family?" Without missing a beat, the dad confirmed: "$30,000. Just a little bit over." Some viewers were left gobsmacked by the sheer amount the parents were willing to spend on the transatlantic trip to watch Liam and Noel reunite. One person tweeted: "I was watching an article on the news today. A family flew into Cardiff from Los Angeles to watch Oasis tonight. It has cost them $30,000 so far. The old saying, 'a fool and his money are easily parted,' comes to mind." Another was even more critical, posting: "To the Yank that spent $30,000 for him and his family to see Oasis you are a mug!" Despite the online backlash this family received, there is no denying that the band's reunion has become one of the hottest tickets of the year. Tonight over 74,000 fans are set to pack into the Principality Stadium to witness Noel and Liam Gallagher perform together for the first time in 16 years. It is the opening night of a highly anticipated 17-date UK tour, which includes massive shows in London, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Dublin, before the brothers head further afield to North America, Mexico, South Korea, Japan, Australia, Chile and Argentina. Some fans began queuing outside the Cardiff venue more than 24 hours before the doors will open as they are so desperate to secure prime spots for the two-hour set. Significant measures have been put in place around Cardiff city centre to manage the huge influx of concertgoers. Roads will be closed from midday until midnight, and officials have urged gig-goers to use park-and-ride facilities or public transport to avoid gridlock on the M4 and surrounding routes. A Cardiff Council spokesperson previously said: "The M4 motorway is expected to be very busy for these concerts – so please plan ahead – and avoid the congestion in Cardiff by using the park and ride at the car park by the Vindico Arena on International Drive in the Sports Village." Inside the stadium fans can snap up exclusive Cardiff merchandise, including a special 4th July event T-shirt priced at £40. The music kicks off with support act Cast at 6pm, followed by Richard Ashcroft at 7pm. Oasis will finally hit the stage at 8.15pm for a huge 24-song set, which is set to wrap up just before the 10.30pm curfew.
