Late bogey for Olesen
Follow live coverage of golf's oldest major, with local star Rory McIlroy in action at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland Getty Images The first day of the 2025 Open Championship continues at Royal Portrush Golf Club, as the golf major calendar wraps up in Northern Ireland. Local boy Rory McIlroy (-1) and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (-3, 68) are among the favorites to take home the Claret Jug this weekend, as is 2023 Open runner-up Jon Rahm (-1, 70). The early starters got the worst of the wet and windy conditions, with the weather having lifted for the second half of the draw and those currently out on the course. Leaders: -4 JS Olesen (67), Li (67), Fitzpatrick (67) JS Olesen (67), Li (67), Fitzpatrick (67) Full leaderboard TV: Sky (UK), NBC, Peacock (U.S.) Sky (UK), NBC, Peacock (U.S.) Streaming: Fubo (try for free) Fubo (try for free) Get involved: live@ Getty Images Day +2, Pendrith +4, Olesen -4 (18) Disappointment at the last for Jacob Skov Olesen. The Dane flew the green with his second shot and then opted for the Texas wedge with his third. But he left his effort woefully short which left a difficult putt for par. He misread it, missing left and making just his second bogey of the day. It's still a very impressive round of 67 for Olesen — although he now has to make do with a share of the lead, alongside Lee Westwood. Getty Images Westwood -4, Gotterup -2, Detry -1 (12) What a playing group this is. Lee Westwood, after getting par on the tricky 11th, birdies the par-five 12th after a clever third shot took him five feet away. He finds the hole, and outright second place, a shot off leader Jacob Skov Olesen. Good to see Matt Fitzpatrick recovers to make par on 8. And also good to see he's lost the bobble hat for the cap. For a lad from Sheffield, wearing a bobble in July looked a bit strange... Getty Images Kristoffer Reitan of Norway, another Scandinavian towards the top of the leaderboard, birdies the ninth after a fine second shot took him within three feet. The perfect way to finish the front nine. He is joined on two under, three shots off the lead, by American Chris Gotterup, who birdies the par-five 12th from nearly eight feet. Lowry -2, Morikawa E, Scheffler -1 (6) Brilliant from the 2019 champion. On the second par-three on the course, Harry Colt's, Lowry lands his approach shot to within 16ft and then nervelessly rolls home the putt to move into a share of fourth. Collin Morikawa also drains his putt to move to level par. Scottie Scheffler misses his, however, tapping in for a three. Getty Images Jacob Skov Olesen remains in the lead. He has just teed off on the final hole, blasting one down the middle with his fairway metal. -5: JS Olesen (16) (16) -3: Li (14), Westwood (11) (14), (11) -2: N Højgaard (69), Jordan (10), Reitan (9), Fitzpatrick (7), Echavarria (4) Ooh, close. Twice! Haotong Li of China sends an 18-foot birdie putt on 14 towards the hole, within eight inches, par. Then outright leader Jacob Skov Olesen has a significant 27-footer for birdie on the penultimate hole... and gets it to within a foot. Easy nudge for par. Getty Images Lowry -1, Morikawa +1, Scheffler -1 (5) I said it a little earlier: the fifth hole at Royal Portrush, White Rocks, is a beauty. A par-four that measures only 372 yards, it's within driver range for the majority of the field, when the conditions are right. And they are right at the moment which has led to the exciting sight of a number of players blasting away from the tee box. Scottie Scheffler is the latest to give it a crack — and falls a few feet short. Superb effort. But he then makes a mess of his chip. He tries to stop one on a dime but doesn't get enough on it. He misses his long birdie putt to the left and has to make do with par. Collin Morikawa also makes par. As does Shane Lowry, who will be the happiest of the three because his tee shot leaked right and he had to chip over a sand trap out the rough. Getty Images Matt Fitzpatrick here, looking like he's about to do The Worm after reading this putt. He's at two under through 7. Getty Images Højgaard -2 (69), McKibbin E (71) Harrington +4 (75) Padraig Harrington, the popular Irishman, birdied the first and was the very early leader of the pack, but fell back after bogeys on 3, 4, 8, 10, and 14, birdies on 1 and 12. Tom McKibbin, from round these parts, ended at a creditable even par, with Nicolai Højgaard in a great position at two under. Given the expected worse weather conditions to come, he will be very happy to be back in the clubhouse with a score in the red in the bank. Getty Images Lowry -1, Morikawa +1, Scheffler -1 (4) Pars for Shane Lowry and Scottie Scheffler on four. Scheffler, the World No. 1 who is attempting to win The Open for the first time this week, was particularly happy with his. His approach caught the front of the green and then rolled back, leaving him with a tricky little up and down. He pitched it close and then rolled home the putt to remain in the red. And he pumps his fist after watching his effort drop into the hole. He knows how important it is to make a fast start before the weather truly begins to turn. Getty Images Here come Nico Echavarria and Matthew Jordan. Englishman Jordan through eight, birdies on 4 and 8 with six pars, while Colombian Echavarria has got off to a fantastic start. Successive birdies to begin his round! You absolute beauty. Jacob Skov Olesen, the Dane who shares a surname with compatriot Thorbjorn, extends his lead at the 2025 Open Championship! It is a hell of a shot, too, as he chips in from 23 feet on the 426-yard par-four 15th. He is in gorgeous touch and judged that stroke to perfection. Two shots clear of Haotong Li and Lee Westwood now! Getty Images Xander Schauffele, J.J. Spaun and Scottie Scheffler, who have won three of the last four majors between them, both missed in the same spot on No. 4. Their approach shots were barely able to take a peek at the green before repelling down the dune. Schauffele, playing a group ahead of Scheffler and Spaun, had a cheeky chip to set up a par putt. Getty Images We haven't seen too many players get up and down from bunkers this morning. And this could be the reason why. #Rakegate Getty Images Schauffele E, Spaun +1, Rahm E (4) The opening feature group had got through the third unscathed, but Xander Schauffele's par save is worth a mention after he flopped horribly short off the tee. He worked a 15 footer to leave with his three and rattled it home, ensuring the trio continued on with a clean card for now. But that looks like it's going to change on the par-4 fourth. Jon Rahm is already in for his par, and Schauffele has again recovered from a short approach to leave himself a gettable par putt. But J.J. Spaun found the bunker off the tee and the U.S. Open champion is staring at the first blot on his opening round. Fitzpatrick -2, Fox +4, Matsuyama +1 (6) Good stuff from Matt Fitzpatrick, who missed an eight-footer on the third to follow up his eagle on 2. He was frustrated, understandably, after missing a makeable putt on the fifth, but made up for it on the sixth. A brisk birdie from nearly 17 feet to move to two under, two off the lead. Getty Images The scoring average out there currently stands at +1.62. The last time The Open was held here at Royal Portrush that figure stood at +1.99 (72.99) after the first round of play. (American J.B. Holmes opened with a 66 to lead on -5.) So conditions out there are fractionally easier than in 2019. But expect that scoring average to go up as the conditions worsen this afternoon.
