Saudi Arabia to Send 700 Tonnes of Dates to 102 Countries for Ramadan
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Call, and Guidance is shipping 700 tonnes of dates to 102 countries ahead of Ramadan. This is 200 tonnes larger than last year's shipment of dates. These dates, which are part of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques' Gift Program, will be sent through the ministry's attachés at embassies to arrive in time for the holy month.
Dates have long been central to Ramadan traditions, with Saudi Arabia being one of the world's largest producers. Al-Qassim and Al Madina are known for high quality varieties like Ajwa, Sukkari, and Khalas, which are all widely consumed during the month, as they are typically the first food eaten to break the fast.

A D.I.Y. Art Installation Reimagines Urban Repair in Riyadh A small building in northern Riyadh is slowly being restored by hand. Surrounded by rising towers and constant construction, the site is the centre of an ongoing project led by Saudi artist and curator Meshal Al-Obaidallah and self-taught handyman Joseph Vadakkumchery. Since 2021, the two have been working on 'D.I.Y. (Do It, Yousef)', a collaborative initiative that centers urban repair as both a creative process and civic act. 'In today's changing urban landscape of Riyadh, I view repair and maintenance as acts of preservation and discourse," Al-Obaidallah explained. 'I focus on 'collective amnesia' - that which is deliberately forgotten in Saudi Arabia.' Over time, the personal initiative grew into a layered, community-centered transmedia installation. Livestreams now run alongside hand-posted flyers, found objects and improvised repairs. A dedicated phone line takes public inquiries, while an Instagram account tracks the day-to-day work. In the neighbourhood, passersby often pause to offer tools, share a story, or lend advice - small gestures that turn maintenance into a shared communal goal rather than a solitary task. 'It is rewarding to see what started as a pet project, between me and Meshal, to organically grow into a community project,' said Vadakkumchery. Contributors include architect Abeer Seikaly, designer Majed Alyousef, and cultural entrepreneur Rami Farook. They approach urban repair as a way to preserve traces of the past. Al-Obaidallah's work centres on cultural memory in Saudi Arabia. His previous projects include 'ṣiyāḡah' at KAFD, the online archive ' and the video-based preservation series 'IMG_0220'. Joseph, also known as Yousef, is a long-time Riyadh resident and self-taught contractor whose practice bridges manual labour and quiet observation. Their collaboration was recently recognised with a 2025 Production Award from Culture Resource, a non-profit organisation that supports creatives in the Arab region. A preview of 'D.I.Y. (Do It, Yousef)' was exhibited during Art Week Riyadh at JAX District. The full installation is scheduled to debut in 2026.

‘Expired' cables the cause of Giza outages: Source
An official source at the Ministry of Electricity said that the cause of the power outage at the Dahab Island Power Plant is that the connecting cables to the plant are 'expired.' The Ministry of Electricity announced in a statement that the damaged cable #2 had been repaired to alleviate the crisis until full power is restored. The official source added that the connecting cables to the plant urgently need to be replaced, along a length of 3.5 kilometers, due to their expiration date. They are entirely underground and require time and permits from several authorities. The source indicated that a project to add two new circuits to the plant was awarded to a company more than a year ago. These circuits would have significantly enhanced the plant's capacity, but the company has not implemented them since 2024. When the power outage crisis occurred, the company was contacted, and confirmed that it had not yet obtained any excavation permits from the railways authority. Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat contacted the Ministry of Transport and obtained these permits on Monday evening. Citizens suffer under outages While the Giza Governorate announced in a statement on Monday that repair work on the high-voltage cable in Saqiyat Mekki area had been completed and that electricity was gradually being restored to all affected areas, Al-Masry Al-Youm's tour revealed that Saqiyat Mekki cable was still under repair. Workers said it had burned down again after it was repaired. Residents highlighted their suffering due to water and electricity outages amid the intense heat wave, stressing that 'one woman infected her cesarean section wound due to sweat and the lack of water.' Alaa Mahrous, one of the affected residents, said his wife stumbled on the stairs of the building while descending in the dark and suffered a broken foot. Bakery owners have resorted to purchasing generators costing up to LE35,000 due to all their bakeries being out of service. The water and electricity outages have forced residents to leave their homes. Residents of Omraniya area in Giza were forced to move to family and relatives residencies in unaffected areas as the crisis continued. The Electricity Ministry announced in a statement on Tuesday that crews working to repair Cable 2 have restored power to distribution network, and are currently securing electricity supply to areas within Dahab Island transformer station. The station is now operating through cables 1 and 2, mitigating the severity of the crisis until the power supply is fully stabilized within the station.
