Decades on from its debut, the 1990 film is hailed as an "all-time classic" by fans, marking one of many hits from the successful Coen Brothers.
The American gangster film Miller's Crossing stands as a pivotal work by Joel and Ethan Coen, renowned for their cross-genre storytelling seen in acclaimed films No Country for Old Men and Fargo. Amongst their notable body of work, this particular film is lauded by viewers as the siblings' "greatest", resonating as a "hallmark" within the noir genre.
One Rotten Tomatoes critic says: "All-time classic. This has all the hallmarks of a noir. The script is very complicated but never convoluted to the point where you can't follow it, which is a testament to the masterful editing. My only real complaint is while the music is good, I wish it was used a bit more, but this really is never dry. Everyone should give this a try once."
Its narrative delves into the lives of two feuding gangs during the turmoil of the 1929 Prohibition era, with Albert Finney portraying Irish mob leader Leo O'Bannon who triggers a gang war in defence of his girlfriend's brother, Bernie, embroiled in conflict with a rival faction. Unbeknownst to him, his own partner-in-crime, Tom Reagan—portrayed by Gabriel Byrne—is entangled in an affair with his sweetheart.
Despite Tom's maneuvers to serve up his brother Bernie to the wolves, Leo's faith in his decision to safeguard him remains unshaken. However, with the rise of his Italian gangster nemesis Johnny Caspar, he requires the services of his trusted lieutenant now more than ever, until the bombshell revelation that he's been having an affair with his girlfriend, reports the Daily Record.
The film is peppered with grim humour and startling violence, questioning whether Tom harbours any real empathy. Ostracised by his mob and trapped between two relentless sides, he faces the dire task of assassinating Bernie himself – a test of whether his resolve matches his cold exterior.
A viewer praised the film, writing: "This may be one of the best gangster films I have ever seen. There's not much action, but the drama and acting are so on point. Gabriel Byrne and John Turturro are so freakin' good in this film. The Coen Brothers always make great movies, and this may be their biggest hidden gem."
Meanwhile, another said: "The violence, like the rest of Miller's Crossing, is poetically staged and strangely tasteful. But the movie's real firepower is the staccato slang of its script."
Another highlight is Gabriel Byrne's exemplary portrayal, recognised for standout performances in Hereditary, Little Women, and In Treatment. Renowned as a noteworthy talent who notably never received an Oscar nod, Byrne has nevertheless accrued numerous awards throughout his distinguished career.
Miller's Crossing boasts a talented ensemble cast, including John Turturro and the late Jon Polito, who amassed over 220 film credits throughout his illustrious 35-year career. The film's exceptional performances have prompted audiences to leave glowing five-star reviews.
One reviewer said: "With dialogue so sharp it should come with a safety warning, this movie is amazing. If I had to declare my favourite film across all genres, this would be a very strong contender. Wonderful performances from a truly super cast...so many standout scenes... and that script...close to perfect."
Another viewer added: "One of the greatest noir films of all time, Miller's Crossing is probably the Coens' greatest film. Byrne's performance is spellbinding and stands out among terrific performances by Finney, Marcia Gay Harden, John Turturro, and Steve Buscemi. Brilliantly shot, blocked, and edited realisation of a great screenplay, it's one of the 100 greatest films of all time."
Miller's Crossing is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime, offering viewers the chance to experience this critically acclaimed gangster movie for themselves.

Hulk Hogan's heartbreaking family feud between ex and daughter as he dies at 71

Hulk Hogan appeared to make a dig at the devastating family feud between his ex wife Linda and one of his daughters Brooke as he dies at the age of 71 Wrestler Hulk Hogan appeared to have taken a swipe at his family's long running feud before his death. The WWE icon died aged 71, with reports suggesting he had a cardiac arrest. ‌ Before his death, Hulk and his family were locked in a fallout which resulted in his daughter Brooke Hogan cutting off contact with both her parents. This was recently highlighted by his ex-wife Linda in an emotional video. ‌ Linda shared a tearful video on her social media in March, where she touched upon the family feud. She stated: "I'm okay with most things, but today, something hit. It's been 15 - or longer - years since I left Hulk Hogan and my family is in the worst mess. ‌ "Brooke doesn't talk to us. She's had twins. She got married, she didn't tell us... She had a huge fight with Terry. I don't know how that reflected onto me, but she cut me out too." Despite the feud, Linda insisted that Hulk wasn't bothered, sharing: "I have to be honest about what I went through in my marriage with Terry as Hulk Hogan and what it entailed, and what it has caused over the years.. ‌ "He marches on, like, 'Oh, I'm promoting my own beer, real American beer. Yeah, look at me.' He's such a hero, right? Not. I've given him more opportunities to come back and makeup the family. It's been 20 years and I'm still this sad. Somebody please explain that." In response to her mother's emotional video, Brooke issued a scathing statement, asserting that she has "completely separate reasons" for not reaching out to either of her parents. "There was a recent video posted by my Mother that was concerning enough for people to send to me, that has made me feel the need to address the tip of a very large iceberg that is my immediate family," she penned at the time. ‌ "What little I am addressing does not even scratch the surface of what l've dealt with my entire life. I will start by saying this video is mild compared to behaviour I have witnessed for the greater portion of my life. This also comes in addition to false claims that she's previously posted, then deleted. That being said, she has been through A LOT of trauma and pain, my heart breaks for her. You can't control how others treat you, but you can control how you treat others and cope with things." She continued: "I have completely separate reasons for going no contact with each of my parents. This decision was made based purely on how they have each dealt with me directly my entire life." ‌ While Hulk remained silent regarding the statements made by both Linda and Brooke, he did share a clip of himself and his new spouse Sky eating popcorn whilst staring wide-eyed at the camera. He captioned the post: "Getting ready for the new HH TV show coming soon!" Yet some followers branded the upload amid the ongoing drama as being in "poor taste" whilst another commented: "This is why no one likes Hogan. A real man would try and heal, not mock his family." A third added: "Classy that's your child," with a fourth responding: "You guys are acting like children."

Fans queue to sign book of condolence for ‘proud Brummie' Ozzy Osbourne

The book has been opened at the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, which is currently holding an exhibition about the late singer titled Ozzy Osbourne: Working Class Hero. Mourners also had the option to leave a voice note in any language they chose by speaking into a red phone. Osbourne was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2019 and died at the age of 76 on Tuesday morning, surrounded by his family. The news came a few weeks after he reunited with his Black Sabbath bandmates on July 5 to play a farewell gig at Villa Park – a stone's throw from where the band was formed in 1968. Tributes were led by his Black Sabbath bandmates, including Terence 'Geezer' Butler, Tony Iommi and Bill Ward, along with celebrity friends including Kiss star Gene Simmons and Queen guitarist Sir Brian May. Earlier on Thursday, Status Quo frontman Francis Rossi spoke on ITV's Good Morning Britain and described Osbourne as 'wild'. He said: 'He was a great young guy. And then obviously, American success got to him, I think. And it gets to a lot of us. You get carried away with all that stuff that one shouldn't. I did and I'm over it.' Osbourne was also described by the Lord mayor of Birmingham, Zafar Iqbal, as a 'proud Brummie' who helped put the city 'on the world map'. Mr Iqbal met the founding members of the heavy metal band, formed in the city in 1968, when they were presented with the freedom of Birmingham in June. He told the PA news agency: 'He (Osbourne) was very important and he was a proud Brummie. He loved the city. He will be much missed, I think, and he was loved by so many people in the city.' Other stars have also honoured the 'Prince of Darkness' by paying tribute to him during live concert performances, including Lady Gaga, Coldplay and Alice Cooper. In a statement shared on Instagram, Cooper said: 'He was and will continue to be a rock n roll legend. Rock n Roll is a family and a fraternity. When we lose one of our own it bleeds. I wish I would have gotten to know my brother Ozzy better.'

Shia LaBeouf and FKA Twigs release joint statement as sexual battery lawsuit settled

FKA Twigs has settled her lawsuit against her ex-boyfriend, actor Shia LaBeouf, out of court, almost two years after she first accused him of sexual battery, assault and emotional distress British singer FKA Twigs and American actor Shia LaBeouf have reached a private settlement out of court after she accused him of assault and "relentless abuse". The case between the former couple, who dated from 2018 until the end of 2019, had been scheduled to go to trial last year, but was postponed multiple times. A statement from each star's respective lawyers reads: "Committed to forging a constructive path forward, we have agreed to settle our case out of court. While the details of the settlement will remain private, we wish each other personal happiness, professional success and peace in the future." According to legal documents initially obtained by Us Weekly, the British musician, birth name Tahliah Barnett, has filed to dismiss her lawsuit against her former boyfriend with prejudice, which means she cannot refile the claims in the future. The 37-year-old singer sued LaBeouf in 2020 for sexual battery, assault and infliction of emotional distress, alleging a pattern of "relentless" abuse. In the suit and in an interview with the New York Times, Barnett claimed that LaBeouf, whom she dated from 2018 to 2019 after meeting on the set of his semi-autobiographical film Honeyboy, knowingly exposed her to a sexually transmitted infection, attempted to strangle her and slammed her against a car. LaBeouf has always denied all allegations of wrongdoing. The Transformers actor issued a statement when Barnett first went public with her allegations, telling the New York Times in an email: "I'm not in any position to tell anyone how my behaviour made them feel. I have no excuses for my alcoholism or aggression, only rationalisations. "I have been abusive to myself and everyone around me for years. I have a history of hurting the people closest to me. I'm ashamed of that history and am sorry to those I hurt. There is nothing else I can really say." LaBeouf, who became a father in March 2022 with wife Mia Goth, opened up about the abuse allegations against him on Jon Bernthal's podcast Real Ones. 'I hurt that woman,' LaBeouf said, without naming any woman in particular. "And in the process of doing that, I hurt many other people, and many other people before that woman. I was a pleasure-seeking, selfish, self-centred, dishonest, inconsiderate, fearful human being." The 39-year-old actor went on to add: "When I think about what my life has become, and what it is now, like what my purpose is now… I need to be useful. And when I look at this #MeToo environment, there's not a whole lot of dudes that are taking accountability. I f**ked up bad. Like crash and burn type shit. [I] hurt a lot of people, and I'm fully aware of that. And I'm going to owe for the rest of my life." Speaking to Louis Theroux in 2021, Barnett said she felt "scared and intimidated and controlled" during her time with LaBeouf. "I was left with PTSD [post-traumatic stress disorder] from that, which again is just something that I don't think we really talk about as a society just in terms of the healing when leaving, and how much work that has to be done to recover, to get back to the person that you were before," she shared on the BBC Radio 4 Grounded podcast. LaBeouf made his stage debut in the premiere production of David Mamet's play Henry Johnson in 2023 and played a lead role in Francis Ford Coppola's drama Megalopolis the following year. He is currently connected to the production of God of the Rodeo, a film set in 1967 and centring around the story of an inmate rodeo at Angola Prison. Barnett released her third studio album Eusexua in January, which peaked at number three on the UK albums chart. The Cheltenham-born singer had been set to perform at Coachella festival in April but was forced to withdraw from the line-up due to visa issues.
