'Perfect' gangster film starring forgotten Hollywood legends has near perfect rating
Decades on from its debut, the 1990 film is hailed as an "all-time classic" by fans, marking one of many hits from the successful Coen Brothers.
The American gangster film Miller's Crossing stands as a pivotal work by Joel and Ethan Coen, renowned for their cross-genre storytelling seen in acclaimed films No Country for Old Men and Fargo. Amongst their notable body of work, this particular film is lauded by viewers as the siblings' "greatest", resonating as a "hallmark" within the noir genre.
One Rotten Tomatoes critic says: "All-time classic. This has all the hallmarks of a noir. The script is very complicated but never convoluted to the point where you can't follow it, which is a testament to the masterful editing. My only real complaint is while the music is good, I wish it was used a bit more, but this really is never dry. Everyone should give this a try once."
Its narrative delves into the lives of two feuding gangs during the turmoil of the 1929 Prohibition era, with Albert Finney portraying Irish mob leader Leo O'Bannon who triggers a gang war in defence of his girlfriend's brother, Bernie, embroiled in conflict with a rival faction. Unbeknownst to him, his own partner-in-crime, Tom Reagan—portrayed by Gabriel Byrne—is entangled in an affair with his sweetheart.
Despite Tom's maneuvers to serve up his brother Bernie to the wolves, Leo's faith in his decision to safeguard him remains unshaken. However, with the rise of his Italian gangster nemesis Johnny Caspar, he requires the services of his trusted lieutenant now more than ever, until the bombshell revelation that he's been having an affair with his girlfriend, reports the Daily Record.
The film is peppered with grim humour and startling violence, questioning whether Tom harbours any real empathy. Ostracised by his mob and trapped between two relentless sides, he faces the dire task of assassinating Bernie himself – a test of whether his resolve matches his cold exterior.
A viewer praised the film, writing: "This may be one of the best gangster films I have ever seen. There's not much action, but the drama and acting are so on point. Gabriel Byrne and John Turturro are so freakin' good in this film. The Coen Brothers always make great movies, and this may be their biggest hidden gem."
Meanwhile, another said: "The violence, like the rest of Miller's Crossing, is poetically staged and strangely tasteful. But the movie's real firepower is the staccato slang of its script."
Another highlight is Gabriel Byrne's exemplary portrayal, recognised for standout performances in Hereditary, Little Women, and In Treatment. Renowned as a noteworthy talent who notably never received an Oscar nod, Byrne has nevertheless accrued numerous awards throughout his distinguished career.
Miller's Crossing boasts a talented ensemble cast, including John Turturro and the late Jon Polito, who amassed over 220 film credits throughout his illustrious 35-year career. The film's exceptional performances have prompted audiences to leave glowing five-star reviews.
One reviewer said: "With dialogue so sharp it should come with a safety warning, this movie is amazing. If I had to declare my favourite film across all genres, this would be a very strong contender. Wonderful performances from a truly super cast...so many standout scenes... and that script...close to perfect."
Another viewer added: "One of the greatest noir films of all time, Miller's Crossing is probably the Coens' greatest film. Byrne's performance is spellbinding and stands out among terrific performances by Finney, Marcia Gay Harden, John Turturro, and Steve Buscemi. Brilliantly shot, blocked, and edited realisation of a great screenplay, it's one of the 100 greatest films of all time."
Miller's Crossing is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime, offering viewers the chance to experience this critically acclaimed gangster movie for themselves.

You can't have a soap wedding without some kind of hiccup or obstacle – and Coronation Street are going all out to hit Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) and Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) with disaster on the big day – with the bride rushed to hospital after a collapse. Even before this calamitous end to the very glam and colourful ceremony, there are shenanigans aplenty. The week starts with the stag and hen parties. Having saved money buying cheap suits for Dev and Aadi, Bernie is having a low key hen do in the bistro when word reaches them that the boys have hired a pole dancer at the Rovers. A furious Bernie storms into the Rovers to find the stags cheering on the pole dancer, but is all as it seems? As the big day dawns on Wednesday (August 6th), Dev and Bernie's dream wedding goes from bad to worse when the quads fall ill and have to watch with Joseph on live stream. Meanwhile, Bernie forgets her lucky charm locket containing the photo of Paul and when she runs home to get it she disturbs a burglar. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Back at the Bistro, the guests are entertained by a song from Debbie Webster who suddenly surprises Ronnie with a proposal. If Dev and Bernie's wedding falls apart, at least we might have another to look forward to. After such an eventful start to the day the guests take their seats for the main event and a glowing Bernie walks down the aisle towards Dev to make their vows. With the service about to start, Dev and Bernie share loving looks, but suddenly Bernie struggles to breathe and collapses in front of a shocked Dev. Is the dramatic day about to end in tragedy or will Bernie and Dev tie the knot? 'The day goes from bad to worse!' actress Jane exclaimed. 'That's what is so brilliant about Coronation Street, you don't know what you're going to get until you open the page of the script and that's what is so fantastic about how it plays out – we've got this woman raving down the aisle and the next minute she's collapsed and an ambulance is on its way!' More Trending Jane also revealed that she had a hand in the design of Bernie's unconventional wedding dress. She added: 'I knew that Bernie wouldn't go down the road of wearing a traditional dress. I had seen some old footage of Elkie Brookes on TV and she was wearing a kaftan. 'I am a big fan of Elkie so that was the initial inspiration, but this is for Bernie so it needed to be a bit extra. Teen girl suffers horror head injury after 'freak accident' on fairground ride
Police confirmed they are liaising with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) following the incident on Saturday night. A teenage girl has been left with potentially life-changing head injuries after her hair became trapped on a ride at a popular fair. The 18-year-old was rushed to hospital following the incident at the Netley Marsh Steam and Craft Show around 10.50pm on Saturday, reports the Mirror. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary confirmed they are liaising with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) as part of the investigation. A woman who was at the scene said she helped give first aid to the stricken teen as panic broke out. She said: 'One of the girl's friends came down and said how serious it was and some of us offered assistance. It's very shocking it could happen on a fairground ride that young children go on. This must never happen again." Fair owner Charles Cole said he 'sympathises' with the girl and her family and revealed her hair became trapped on the Fun House walk-on attraction. Speaking earlier today, he added: 'Approximately 50 people had been on the ride before the 18-year-old, and there were no issues. 'The ride is 20 years old but it had been tested that day. This was a freak accident. Somehow, the girl's hair got caught and she could not grab on to the handrails. 'Nobody wants to hurt anyone, and we are a family business. Last night was very upsetting, especially for the man who owns the ride. Safety is our priority, and we sympathise with the girl and her parents." A post on the show's Facebook page on Sunday insisted: 'Good morning from day three of the show. Despite what you may have read or seen online, we are open and look forward to seeing you all!" The ride has been shut down while police and safety inspectors investigate.

Inside England captain Leah Williamson's romance with Miss USA winner Elle Smith
England captain Leah Williamson will be leading the Lionesses to hopeful victory in the Women's Euro 2025 finals tonight. Leah's England will take on former rivals Spain in St Jakob-Park in Basel, Switzerland, two years after losing out on their World Cup attempt. All eyes will be on the England team, including 29-year-old team captain Leah, who was permanently appointed to the post by England manager Sarina Wiegman in 2022. But what do we know about Leah's life away from the pitch? Does she have a girlfriend or partner? When not leading her team to victory, Leah has made headlines for her rumoured romance with former Miss USA Elle Smith. Here's all we know about Leah Williamson's relationship with the 27-year-old beauty pageant winner. American journalist and beauty pageant contestant Elle Smith was crowned Miss USA in 2021. In the run-up to the competition, she was named Miss Kentucky USA that same year, making her only the second woman from Kentucky to win Miss USA. She went on to represent the United States at Miss Universe, ultimately finishing in the Top 10, losing out to India's Harnaaz Sandhu. Although they became romantically linked in 2024, Leah and Elle have not officially confirmed whether they are in a relationship. Speculation that the pair were 'soft-launching' a relationship began in March, when Elle posted a video of her and Leah floating in the ocean together on a paddleboard. This came accompanied by the caption 'happy birthday my love x,' to which Leah responded with a series of emojis. Since then, they have continued to pop up all over each other's social media, including a picture of them celebrating England's 6-0 win against Portugal, back in May. In the black-and-white picture, Leah sits on Elle's lap, with the former Miss USA titleholder's arms around her. In response to the picture, Leah commented: 'We did it🥹🥹🥹' Last month, Elle shared a series of snapshots from their holiday to Majorca together – many of which saw the pair looking very loved-up indeed. These images included a snap of Elle and Leah on a paddleboard together, as well as shots of them all dressed up and headed out for dinner. Leah shared her own carousel of images on her Instagram page, too, which included a number of grabs of Elle smiling and contented. Leah also showed her appreciation when Elle shared a series of snaps posing in her Skims bikini while on holiday in Jamaica for her birthday last month. 'I have no words,' Leah wrote in the comments to the post – to which Elle responded: 'all yours.' More Trending She then commented again soon afterwards, writing: 'Just come for a second viewing.' Elle has shared a message of support ahead of tonight's final, posting a snap of herself in a t-shirt to her Instagram Stories. This wasn't any old England t-shirt either. The message emblazoned on the white tee's front in red writing? 'Live, Laugh, Leah.' Got a story?
