Ukraine says it hits four warplanes in Russia's Volgograd region
(Reuters) -Ukraine's military said on Friday it had struck four warplanes at an airbase in central Russia's Volgograd Region as part of a drive to hit Russian war assets.
In a post on the Telegram messaging app, the military said it had hit four Su-34 aircraft at the Marinovka base outside the city of Volgograd, some 900 km (550 miles) from the Ukrainian border.
The post said the operation was conducted by the military's special operations branch, together with the SBU security service and other services of the military.
"According to preliminary information, four aircraft were hit, specifically SU-34 planes, as well as technical-operational facilities where different warplanes are serviced and repaired," the statement said.
There was no immediate comment from the Russian military.
Ukraine has engaged in a number of long-range operations against military targets in recent months -- industrial, energy and other sites.
Earlier this month, the Ukrainian military carried out a major strike, dubbed "Operation Spider's Web," in which large numbers of long-range Russian bombers were hit at several Russian airbases far from Ukrainian territory.
The latest statement said the damage caused by the strike on Marinovka was being assessed.
It described the Su-34 as Russia's main aircraft used in bombing raids on Ukrainian territory, deployed in particular for launching guided bombs, used increasingly in attacks on Ukrainian cities.

He said the government has no authority to instruct social media platform providers to take such actions, which are only carried out if the content or account is found to have violated the law. 'When a piece of content or an account is taken down or blocked, it means the platform acknowledges and complies with existing laws and believes that the content has breached those laws,' he said at a press conference after launching the Nadi Aspirasi Nasional Bersama Anak Muda (NANBA) programme here today. Earlier, in his speech, Fahmi said 173,642 pieces of content had been taken down by social media platform providers from Jan 1 until yesterday. Fahmi, who is also Lembah Pantai MP, said 51 per cent, or more than 90,000, of the total involved online gambling, while over 43,000 were scam-related, with the remainder linked to other criminal activities. He said Facebook was identified as the platform with the highest number of online gambling and scam advertisements, followed by TikTok, while Telegram was found to be the weakest in managing scam-related issues. 'Of the content requested for removal on Telegram, half were scams, but the platform did not take down all of them. So we need to be firm with these platforms. 'Telegram representatives will be in Kuala Lumpur this week to continue discussions with MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission), covering, among others, scams, online gambling, child sexual abuse material, prostitution content, and copyrighted films or TV episodes previously accessible via various Telegram channels,' he said.

Only platform providers can block social media content, says Fahmi
KUALA LUMPUR: Only social media platform providers have the authority to block or remove content and accounts, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said today. The government cannot instruct platforms to take such actions unless the content violates the law. 'When content or an account is blocked, it means the platform acknowledges the breach of existing laws,' Fahmi said during a press conference after launching the Nadi Aspirasi Nasional Bersama Anak Muda (NANBA) programme. From January 1 to June 27, social media platforms removed 173,642 pieces of content. Over 90,000 (51%) involved online gambling, while more than 43,000 were scam-related. The rest were linked to other illegal activities. Facebook had the highest number of gambling and scam ads, followed by TikTok. Telegram was the weakest in handling scam content, removing only half of flagged posts. 'Telegram representatives will meet MCMC this week to discuss scams, gambling, child exploitation, and copyright violations,' Fahmi said. He noted Telegram's small team of around 50 staff managing over a billion users. The NANBA programme, meaning 'friend' in Tamil, strengthens government engagement with the Indian community, especially youth. It enhances two-way communication on policies, initiatives, and opportunities.
