Shoaib Bashir grabs six Zimbabwe wickets as England win Test in three days

Yahoo25-05-2025
There were periods of resistance, some eye-catching shots and supporters cheering them on from the stands. But Zimbabwe could not prevent the inevitable or even reach the fourth day. England, inspired by six wickets from Shoaib Bashir, wrapped up this one-off Test by an innings and 45 runs.
Even factoring in lowly opposition who froze on day one and could only battle for respectability thereafter, nine wickets in the match added up to another chapter in Bashir's remarkable rise. After all, he was plugging away on loan for Glamorgan at the start of the summer and had just two victims to show for it.

Things change when Bashir slips on an England shirt and pops up the collar like Eric Cantona back in the day. Assisted by a breeze and pumped full of weapons-grade confidence by Ben Stokes, the 21-year-old got the ball to drift and drop on Zimbabwe's batters in a manner that bodes well for the days ahead. India are up next and England need their spinner in form.
It was needed, too. Tasked with backing up their efforts from the previous day, England's seamers struggled for impact a second time around. Sam Cook was struggling to summon up his county form on debut, while Gus Atkinson was clearly nursing a sore quad muscle and sent down three overs. Josh Tongue, though dutifully pounding in to deliver a short-ball plan for his captain, was not quite extracting the same bite as witnessed 24 hours earlier.
They were also met by a second stirring pushback from Zimbabwe to follow Brian Bennett's whizz-bang century on day two. Following on and resuming on 30 for two, a fourth-wicket stand worth 122 runs from Sean Williams and Ben Curran – the former dashing, the latter digging in – was giving rise to thoughts of a wicketless morning. Only Stokes looked threatening among the quicks.
But on the stroke of lunch an arm ball from Bashir beat a sweep by Williams on 88 and delivered a tight lbw. Curran slapped one straight to Stokes at cover after the restart to leave Zimbabwe 142 for four, 158 runs arrears, with only a dashing 60 from the experienced Sikandar Raza softening what followed.
Bashir, as Stokes stressed after the win, is not the finished article. But he is a quick learner, as shown by his growing improvement to the right-handers. After unstitching the Zimbabwe lower order – the juiciest being another dipper that castled Tafadzwa Tsiga – those county struggles felt a distant memory.
While Stokes was delighted for Bashir, he was simply in awe at the catch that produced his own wicket. Harry Brook was the fielder in question, producing a one-handed screamer above his head at second slip to remove Wesley Madhevere for 31. Having left Stuart Broad aghast on this ground with a similar stunner 10 years ago, Stokes was now the one wide-eyed.

Beyond the niggle to Atkinson, and perhaps some concerns at Cook looking a bit toothless on day two, it added up to a pretty satisfactory outing for England. Most encouraging was probably Stokes sending down 11.2 overs without the body creaking. That he extracted good movement from a batter-friendly surface was an added bonus.
While he would have liked some time in the middle, his top order cashed in on the first day with centuries for Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope. The subject of the latter's place was the captain's only gripe, insisting his suggestion of an instant return for Jacob Bethell before the match had been misinterpreted. After Pope's 171, even against a callow attack on a high-scoring ground, Bethell will surely have to wait his turn.
As for Zimbabwe, it is not often a team swept aside by an innings is the one doing the lap of honour. But after waiting 22 years to play in England, and Bennett etching his name in history, they were well within their rights to thank their wonderful fans. It may not have been much of a contest out in the middle but this was still a significant Test match.

‘I can tell you': Romano says one what player did over the weekend is ‘confirmation' of where his Utd future lies

Alejandro Garnacho has essentially gone public with his desires to join Chelsea as he anticipates a concrete approach from the London outfit. Desperate to stay in the Premier League next season, the Manchester United graduate has closed the door to any outside interest and, now, has his sights almost solely set on a Stamford Bridge switch. The Club World Cup winners, who earned a healthy £85 million cash injection via their tournament win last month, are expected to make a formal offer before the window closes, although whether it will meet United's demands remains to be seen. Chelsea and Alejandro Garnacho: The state of play Garnacho is desperate to join the Blues before 25/26 gets underway. (Photo by) Chelsea's pursuit of Garnacho has been put on the back burner whilst they try to finalise a deal for Xavi Simons of RB Leipzig. Then, it's anticipated they will turn to the outcast Red to further bolster Enzo Maresca's attacking options following the departures of Noni Madueke (Arsenal) and Joao Felix (Al Nassr). United value the 21-year-old in the region of £40m. However, it's been claimed Chelsea would only be willing to fork out around £30m this summer, meaning there's plenty of work to do in negotiations if an agreement is to come to fruition. The Reds risk being lowballed in talks due to the fact that it's now public knowledge that they want him gone and the player himself wants out. Clubs are well aware that he has no future at Old Trafford and that Ruben Amorim wants to wash his hands of the situation, while Garnacho is also angling for a Chelsea move on social media; when Fabrizio Romano posted an update on the side's interest on Instagram, Garnacho liked the post. Romano: Garnacho is waiting on Chelsea's call Even Romano saw this as direct 'confirmation' that the youngster will be moved on, as he reacted on YouTube, saying: 'I think it's an important confirmation of this interest from Chelsea. The player is fully aware of Chelsea's interest, and I can tell you that Chelsea are fully aware of Garnacho's appreciation. 'So it's a mutual feeling between Chelsea and Garnacho. The player wants to go to Chelsea. The player is giving total priority to Chelsea. The player is waiting for Chelsea to act. 'At the moment, still not a direct negotiation club to club, but I expect that to happen this month in August.' With Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong already secured, Hughes is now working on moves to bring in a centre-back and try to lure Alexander Isak away from Newcastle. Those two additions would make this an incredible window for Liverpool. However, it's not the only two transfers Hughes is focused on. He still has some important decisions to make when it comes to potential departures. There's the notable players like Darwin Nunez, Federico Chiesa, Harvey Elliott and Tyler Morton. But they aren't the only ones. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas away range The Liverpool ECHO has written about three further deals the Reds are ready to agree including one permanent and two potential loan moves for their exciting wonderkid trio. The first of these surrounds the future of Luca Stephenson who is the subject of an approach from Aberdeen. According to the report the Scottish side are keen to sign him on a permanent deal from Liverpool. At this moment in time, there has been no answer from Liverpool whether they would be willing to allow him to leave permanently. It's also important to note that according to the report, Swansea City, Cardiff City, Rotherham and Reading are also believed to be interested in Stephenson. He is not the only one in high demand. The report claims the second player under consideration by Liverpool is James McConnell. West Bromwich Albion, Ipswich Town, Derby County, Oxford United and Swansea have all enquired about the player's availability according to the report. Meanwhile, French side Metz are also believed to be admirers of him. And last but not least Liverpool are also considering a deal for Lewis Koumas. The exciting winger caught the eye at Stoke City last season and has experience playing for Jurgen Klopp in the first team. Now the ECHO claims that a host of Championship clubs have expressed an interest in the young Welsh star. These include Norwich City, Sheffield United, Hull City, Preston North End, Oxford, Birmingham City and Wrexham. Meanwhile, most interestingly, the report claims Spanish side Sevilla are also considering a move for Koumas, which could be a great move. All in all, it's quite clear that Hughes' focus won't just be on incomings. These three deals the Reds are ready to agree are also going to be on his mind. It's essential he makes the right choice in these situations, too. The likes of Quansah and Morton are examples that the Reds can make a lot of profit from selling on some of their academy stars at the right time.

Bruno Fernandes says Manchester United side were ‘lazy', calls for signings to increase competition

Bruno Fernandes called his Manchester United team 'lazy' and called for more squad competition after their draw to Everton on Sunday. Club captain Fernandes called the United States tour a 'positive' as they won the friendly 2025 Premier League Summer Series, despite Everton holding the side to a 2-2 draw, but called for change as the transfer window approaches the deadline day on September 1. Advertisement 'I don't want to have a dig at anyone, but I think the club is doing the best they can in terms of all the financial situations they talk about,' he told Sky Sports after the game. 'I don't know about it, I'm not involved in that. But obviously it was crystal clear we needed more competition for the players that were here. We needed more quality to get everyone to step up a bit more and to have more to do to get into the starting line-up. 'I think that's what the club and the manager are trying to do and hopefully we can get one or two players more to help with that.' Head coach Ruben Amorim also commented on the Manchester club's transfer window before the game, keeping the door open for future signings. 'We are always looking to improve the team. And we have some characteristics that we would like to have,' he said. 'But again, it depends on the market. It depends on the sales. We'll see. But I'm really happy.' United have made three first-team signings this summer, bringing in forwards Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford and full-back Diego Leon from Cerro Porteno. RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko is another player the club have been interested in, but their interest has been matched by Newcastle United who put in a bid, that was deemed insufficient, for the forward on Saturday. Manchester United beat West Ham 2-1 and Bournemouth 4-1 to win the PL Summer Series. Their 2025-26 Premier League season opener is against Arsenal on August 17.
