The blaze on the busy shopping street saw 10 fire engines and approximately 70 firefighters called out on Monday.
The fire began in a storage area behind some of the shops on Electric Avenue, a street made famous by Guyanese-British musician Eddy Grant's 1983 song of the same name.
It then spread to the building above the storage area, according to London Fire Brigade (LFB).
Firefighters continue to work to extinguish the fire in #Brixton.

A large plume of smoke could be seen rising over the roofs of the street, which hosts Brixton's market, throughout Monday morning.
No injuries have been reported, according to the Metropolitan Police.
But in a statement, the force said: 'One suspect, a man in his 40s, has been arrested on suspicion of arson. He remains in police custody.'
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police on 101 quoting CAD 2087/07JUL or to remain anonymous call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Throughout the day, police maintained a cordon on Electric Avenue, preventing pedestrians from accessing it, while also blocking off several nearby roads to traffic.
Brixton Tube station was closed throughout Monday to stop smoke from travelling, and residents living nearby were advised to shut their windows to stop prevent smoke inhalation.
Firefighters could be seen heading in and out of several shops on Electric Avenue throughout Monday, trying to access a back area behind them where the fire started.
Smoke could be seen billowing out of the doors of two of the shops they entered, while water poured from a street-side access point where they had connected their hoses.

A fire engine with a long ladder could meanwhile be seen in use on Electric Lane, a small back alley behind the main shopping street.
The ladder was used as both a lookout, and as a water tower to help extinguish the fire from a height, LFB said.
The fire brigade said the blaze was brought under control by 1.11pm, but firefighters remained in the area to observe.

Brit man found dead in the street in Ibiza: Police 'probing drug consumption'

A police investigation has been launched in Ibiza after a British man was found dead on the Spanish island. The Brit, said to be aged between 45 and 50, was already in cardiac arrest when emergency responders arrived at the scene near the popular resort of Playa d'en Bossa. He died at the scene following unsuccessful attempts to revive him. An autopsy has yet to take place but sources close to the investigation said the possibility his death was linked to drug consumption was being investigated. The alert was raised around 12.30am this morning. The man was found in the street near four-star Ibiza Twiins hotel. There has not yet been any official comment from the National Police, but officers are expected to offer information tomorrow. It is not yet clear whether the British man was on holiday on the island or lived locally, although he is thought to have been a tourist. Sources confirmed he was a British national but could not specify his exact age. MailOnline has approached the Foreign Office for comment. The tragedy comes just weeks after a British tourist tragically died on his sun lounger while relaxing on a Greek paradise island beach. The 73-year-old man was found by fellow beach-goers at the spot in Agia Paraskevi, Skiathos last month. They alerted a lifeguard who provided first aid and called the emergency services, according to local reports. A doctor from a nearby health center tried for 40 minutes to revive the tourist but unfortunately was unable to do so. The man's cause of death is unknown, and an autopsy is being carried out. A FCDO Spokesperson said: 'We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities'.

52,000 petals fall in St Paul's to remember 52 victims of 7/7 bombings 20 years on

As the white petals fell from the dome of St Paul's, so did the tears. The Prime Minister and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh joined victims' families, survivors and emergency workers at St Paul's Cathedral yesterday to mark the 20th anniversary of the July 7 London bombings. During the memorial service, the cathedral was filled with 52,000 white petals fluttering through the air like snow flakes as the names of the 52 dead were read out. One victim's daughter, Saba Edwards, stoically read the names of those who died on the Piccadilly Line bombing, but her voice cracked and she was unable to hold back the tears as she came to her own mother Behnaz Mozakka. Thelma Stober – who survived the Aldgate bomb but suffered life-changing injuries including the loss of her lower left leg – struggled to contain her emotions as she also read the names. During the emotional service, tributes were paid to those who lost their lives as well as the hundreds injured in the attacks on three Tube trains and a double-decker bus in the worst single terrorist atrocity on British soil. Survivors and relatives of those killed in the bombings spoke movingly about how the areas involved in the attacks have changed in the past 20 years. Ellie Patsalos, the wife of Professor Philip Patsalos, who lost a leg in the blast between King's Cross and Russell Square stations, said: 'Here, men and women seek understanding and their search for truth challenges the ignorance which casts so much darkness over our world.' With Keir Starmer at the commemorative ceremony were Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper. Yesterday the Prime Minister laid wreaths at the July 7 memorial in Hyde Park at 8.50am to coincide with the time the first bomb went off. He was joined by officials including Scotland Yard Commissioner Mark Rowley, and the Chief Constable of the British Transport Police Lucy D'Orsi. Prince William was also at the Hyde Park memorial, laying a floral tribute and listening to testimonies given by family members of those who died and people present at the attacks. Sir Keir said: 'Today the whole country will unite to remember the lives lost in the 7/7 attacks, and all those whose lives were changed forever. 'We honour the courage shown that day – the bravery of the emergency services, the strength of survivors, and the unity of Londoners in the face of terror. Those who tried to divide us failed. We stood together then, and we stand together now, against hate and for the values that define us: freedom, democracy and the rule of law.' The Home Secretary added: 'Twenty years have passed since 7/7 but the passage of time makes what happened that day no less shocking. It was an appalling attack on our capital city and on democracy itself.' Sir Sadiq said Londoners 'will always choose hope over fear and unity over division'. He added, 'We also pay tribute to those who ran towards danger on that terrible day... their bravery and selflessness will never be forgotten.'

Freed Dubai teen Marcus Fakana's jail hell as he was 'forced to watch rapes'

Nineteen-year-old Marcus Fakana has now been released from a hellish Dubai prison after he was jailed for having sex with another teen. British teen Marcus Fakana has at last been freed from a Dubai prison following 12 months of "hell". Nineteen-year-old Marcus, from Tottenham, north London, had been staying with family in the United Arab Emirates city when he struck up a holiday romance with another teenager, who was also from London, at the Hilton Dubai Palm Jumeirah, reports the Mirror. The pair had consensual sex, but as the girl was still a few weeks off her 18th birthday, the then 18-year-old Marcus faced severe consequences under the harsh legal system of the UAE, where sex between under-18s is illegal. Local police officers were tipped off by the girl's mother, and Marcus was put behind the bars of the notorious al-Awir prison, where he spent his birthday and New Year's far from home, in squalid and dangerous conditions. Holiday romance gone wrong Marcus and the girl had intended to continue their relationship once they returned to the UK. However, everything changed on August 31, 2024, when, while still on holiday, Marcus was taken into police custody. Speaking previously about the summer fling, Marcus told the Mirror: "We had a wonderful time. I couldn't wait to see her again. Then police knocked on our hotel door." For three long days, Marcus was held at the "notorious" Al Barsha Police Station, where, according to the campaign group Detained in Dubai, he was unable to make a phone call or even speak with his worried parents. A judge ordered that the construction apprentice be locked up for one year in the infamous al-Awir prison. In December 2024, Marcus stated that he had been "shocked beyond belief" by the sentence and begged "Let me go home. Please give me my life back." Cruel conditions and harrowing rapes According to a report earlier this year, rape is an "every day occurrence" at Al-Awir Central Prison, with both inmates and guards subjected to frequent violent assaults. Male prisoners must have shaved heads at all times, while female inmates, who are kept in separate buildings, reportedly have to wear head coverings. They are packed into overcrowded cells, with as many as 20 inmates battling for three beds. In an interview with The Independent in 2017, ex-managing director of Leeds United, David Haigh, who was held for nearly two years on trumped-up fraud charges, described the conditions he faced while locked up in Dubai. According to David: 'The only way to describe being in prison in Dubai is hell. I was held for 22 months and I'll never forget it – the stench, the dirt, the smell, the heat, and the lack of any information whatsoever." Remembering how he was punched, Tasered, beaten and raped during his time in a cell, David reflected: 'The worst of this abuse was perpetrated by the prison guards and police. I lost a lot of weight through stress. 'Once, when I asked for some painkillers, a guard hit me over the head with a broom handle. When someone's beating you or hurting you in whatever form, in a weird way, you can deal with that. What I found more harrowing was seeing them do it to other prisoners in front of everyone.' Speaking with the Ilford Recorder, Marcus' sister Davena Kumar revealed that her brother had been separated from friends and forced to watch other prisoners being raped. Davena told the publication: 'He's sharing a cell with someone who's been sentenced for life. They've made him watch other men being raped like it's a lesson." Opening up about Marcus' condition one month into his sentence, Davena shared: "He was skinny and he wasn't himself. He was banging on the door, calling my name, and I just wanted to hug him.' ‌ Return home and lasting trauma Remarking upon Marcus' return home, Detained in Dubai CEO Radha described the teenager as an "extraordinary young man caught in a deeply unjust system". Radha said: "Marcus should never have been put through this. He was supposed to spend a short few days with his family, but ended up spending nearly a year in the tourist destination. We are thrilled that after an intensive campaign, he was officially pardoned and is home safe, surrounded by those who love him. "This was an extraordinary young man caught in a deeply unjust system. We thank everyone who stood by Marcus and helped bring him home." ‌ While celebrating that Marcus is now "back where he belongs", Radha went on to emphasise the " trauma" he's been left with, due to the "severe" impact of the decision. She added: 'Marcus is back where he belongs. But no one should have to endure this. He was 18 at the time, and the British woman involved is now 18 too, a fact she did not divulge to him at the time. We hope his story will prompt serious reconsideration of the UK's travel advice and its engagement with the UAE on human rights issues. "Dubai could have chosen to fine and to deport him. Instead, the 18-year-old was sentenced to one year in prison. The impact on his life has been severe and there was no need for him to endure such trauma." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
