The 20-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., got off to a strong start, breaking Cristian in the Romanian's very first service game to go up 2-0 in the opening set. The Canadian broke her opponent again in the eighth game to take the opening set 6-2.

Cristian wasted little time, however, getting on the board in the second set, breaking Stakusic at love in the opening game. The Romanian, currently ranked a career-high 49th in the WTA rankings, would go on to break her opponent twice more as she evened the match at a set apiece.

The third set played out almost identically to that of the second, with Cristian taking the opening game on Stakusic's serve. The Bucharest native then broke twice more on her way to her first-ever win in her first career appearance at the NBO.

Cristian will now play Czechia's Linda Noskova in the second round. Noskova, the 20th seed of the tournament, is coming off a runner-up finish at the Prague Open, where she lost Saturday to compatriot Marie Bouzkova in three sets.

Highly-touted 18-year-old Victoria Mboko is set to make her main draw debut at the National Bank Open later this afternoon against Australia's Kimberly Birrell. Toronto's Mboko has had a breakout 2025 season on tour, qualifying for both the French Open and Wimbledon, where she reached the third and second round, respectively.

Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ont., will open up the night session against two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova. The 25-year-old Canadian, who won the NBO in Toronto in 2019, is coming off a strong showing at the Hopman Cup last week in Italy, as she teamed up with Montreal's Felix Auger-Aliassime to capture the exhibition team tournament. Andreescu won all three of her singles matches in straight sets, dropping only nine games at the competition.

Action concludes on Centre Court with Vancouver's Rebecca Marino taking on French qualifier Elsa Jacquemot. The 34-year-old Marino has struggled this season, winning just one WTA Tour-level match all season.

MONTREAL – A goal in the 73rd minute by Ricardo Marin snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted the visiting Mexican side Puebla to a 2-1 win over CF Montreal in Leagues Cup action on Tuesday night at Stade Saputo. With the loss, Montreal was eliminated from the group stage, while the victory keeps LIGA MX side Puebla hopeful of advancing to the knockout stage. Prince Owusu scored for Montreal in the 47th minute to give the hosts the lead, but Emiliano Gomez netted the equalizer 10 minutes later. Marin's winner improved Puebla's record to 2-0-1. Montreal opened the game on its front foot and made significant progress on the right flank, generating several half-chances in the first 15 minutes. As Puebla began to grow into the game, it was the visitors' turn to exercise some control. Just after the 20-minute mark, Montreal's task became much more complicated when Joel Waterman was given a red card for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity in the penalty area. However, Thomas Gillier came to the rescue by stopping Gomez's penalty. With the numbers advantage, Puebla dominated possession for the remainder of the first half, but could not break down an organized Montreal block that was now looking solely to hit back on the counter. Scoreless after 45 minutes, the hosts began the second half looking for a goal and found one just moments after the restart. After Efraín Orona hit the post from distance, Gomez was able to remedy his penalty miss and bring Puebla back level by burying the rebound. With momentum firmly on their side, Puebla went hunting for the go-ahead goal by continuing to pin Montreal back in its defensive third. The visitors would break the deadlock after managing to play through Montreal's defensive block and taking advantage of an error in marking that left Marin all alone in front of goal. After a series of controversial refereeing decisions from match official Adonai Escobedo, tensions reached a boiling point. This led to a mass confrontation between both teams as the game wound to a close. After order was restored, it was Montreal's turn to play for an equalizer. In the 93rd minute, they were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area, and a near-perfect strike from Brendan Craig saw the ball hit the woodwork. 'I really wanted to come out here and show my best tennis for him, and hopefully he's watching.' Tauson said she only found out about her grandfather's death on Monday, a day after she eliminated Wimbledon champion and No. 3-ranked Iga Swiatek 7-6 (1), 6-3. She spoke of him as one of the biggest supporters of her career. 'He used to coach me a little bit playing tennis and drove me to almost every single practice from my school,' the 22-year-old native of Denmark said. 'It was tough news yesterday morning when I woke up, but I think it's for the better. He was not feeling great for a while.' Tauson hasn't lost a set in the tournament.
