Midland College helps tackle teacher shortages in the Basin
Shelly Haney, the Executive Director of Teacher Preparation & Childcare at Midland College, said teachers play a critical role in shaping future generations.
'I know right now education doesn't have the greatest reputation, but it is a very rewarding, family-friendly career that I would encourage anyone who has a heart for children to seriously consider,' said Haney.
Midland College also offers programs like the Teacher Incentive Allotment and Opportunity Culture so teachers can earn a sustainable income, and get a direct pathway to their profession.
'We have an Associate of Arts teaching degree that students can earn here at Midland College,' said Haney. 'And then we have really strong relationships with university partners for them to transfer to finish their bachelor's degree and teacher certification.'
Midland College also partnered with UTPB to strengthen the pathway for future educators. The benefits of the partnership include:
A clear and seamless pathway from dual credit to an associate degree at Midland College straight to completing a bachelor's degree at UTPB
A streamlined pathway to get into the classroom as an educator quickly
Early and continuous advising through students' academic plan
Access to scholarships designated for this pathway and partnership
Shared data to measure student progress, outcomes and make adjustments if needed
Access to practical learning experiences through observation hours at the Midland College's state-of-the art Pre-K Academy and training site
Shared faculty allows the ability to offer in-person and hybrid class options, for maximum flexibility for students
Host sites for Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE) meetings
Students at Midland ISD also have support from Midland College.
'We work with Midland ISD. I'm lucky to get to be involved with their 'TAFE,' the Texas Association of Future Educators programs in three high schools here in Midland. So that gives me a chance to meet students who are aspiring to be educators, plug in with them, and encourage them to start their next steps at Midland College,' said Haney.

MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)—While applying for college can be stressful, Midland College is aiming to make it easier by offering several resources for first-generation college students. Midland College's multi-faceted approach includes: First Gen Advising InitiativeSpecialized academic advising and coaching for students who opt in via the new student survey or contacting your Academic Advisor. First Gen Student OrganizationEstablished in October 2024, this student-led club fosters community and engagement through peer mentorship. Ambassador ProgramA scholarship program which encourages personal leadership and community involvement. Midland's Walt Williams wins NJCAA Division 1 National Coach of the Year Award
NORMAN, Oklahoma (KMID/KPEJ) – Midland College golf head coach Walt Williams has won the 2025 Dave Williams National Coach of the Year Award presented by Golf Pride Grips. Williams had the Chaps ranked at No. 1 for most of the season as he led them to five team victories, six runner-ups, and three other top-three finishes in his eighth season in Midland. In those wins, Midland won its fifth national championship, the NJCAA Region 5 Championship, and the TankLogix & Tall City Exploration Collegiate. The Chaparrals competed in three tournaments, each hosted by NCAA Division I and NCAA Division II programs, and were led on the course by PING All-Americans Harrison Sewell, Scott Spark, and Bryce Womack. This is the fourth time Walt Williams has won the NJCAA Division I Dave Williams National Coach of the Year in the last six years. He also received the same award in 2019, 2020, and 2022. 4 Alto ISD teachers recognized for their excellent work inside the classroom
ALTO, Texas (KETK) – Four teachers with the Alto ISD were recognized for their incredible work in the classroom as the school year nears an end. The teachers were recognized by the Texas Education Agency's Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA), which is a program that awards excellence in teaching and student achievements. The TIA strives to recruit and retain highly effective teachers in rural and high-need districts. 'It's a little bit of a disappointment': Bullard ISD comments on middle school construction delay Teachers can earn designations at three levels, including recognized, exemplary, and master's based on their classroom performance, student growth and rigorous evaluations. The designation will remain on a teacher's Texas educator certificate for five years. Courtesy of Alto ISD Through the designation, teachers, along with the district, receive compensation funded entirely by the State of Texas. 90 percent of the funds go directly to the teachers, while ten percent of the funds are used to cover administrative costs.
