Gerik Crash: Shattered hope as families receive death certificates
But fate had other plans. Instead of a degree, today, the 47-year-old father received his daughter's death certificate.
Nur Dalila Farhana, 21, was among the 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who perished in the tragic crash along the East-West Highway in Gerik, Perak, on Monday.
'It tore me apart to see my daughter's name on a death certificate. No parent ever wishes to face that, but this is my fate. I have to accept it and stay strong,' he told Bernama after receiving the document from Terengganu National Registration Department (NRD) director Mohamad Nasir Kareem at the family's home in Kampung Bharu Tok Dhor here.
Mohamad Isma said that the death certificate in hand would ease matters for him and his wife, Norinda Kasim, 49, in handling other affairs, such as insurance claims and related issues.
The crash occurred when the chartered bus, en route from Jertih to UPSI's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, collided with a Perodua Alza multipurpose vehicle before overturning.
The accident also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver and his assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza.
Meanwhile, Mohamad Nasir said that eight death certificates were handed over to the next of kin at their respective residences today, adding that five others were collected by family members at the NRD counters, whereas two more are still being processed.
'This is an initiative by the NRD to ease the burden on families by handling the death registration process for their children without requiring them to be present at the NRD counters in Besut or Setiu,' he added.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — The site of the bus crash that killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students at KM53 of the East-West Highway (Jalan Raya Timur Barat, JRTB) has been upgraded with the installation of solar-powered street lights, Utusan Malaysia reported today. Other major improvements include resurfacing of the road and repairs to damaged guardrails following the June 9 incident, according to the Malay daily. A 60km survey from Gerik town in Perak to the crash site in Banun, near Tasik Banding, revealed ongoing infrastructure works, particularly the installation of solar lights at sharp bends and narrow sections of the highway. A Gerik resident, who wished to be known only as Sue, 39, told Utusan Malaysia she welcomed the upgrades as a preventive step to avoid similar tragedies. 'This gives drivers more confidence at night. JRTB hasn't seen improvements like this in a long time and was quite neglected. It's encouraging for those of us who frequently travel to Jeli,' she reportedly said. Built during the communist insurgency in the 1970s, the Gerik-Jeli stretch cuts through dense forest, home to wild elephants and the Malayan tiger. Year Six girl dies after being thrown onto windshield in crash with teen driver in Kuala Selangor
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — A 12-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries nearly 24 hours after she was hit by a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) driven by a 17-year-old in Kampung Bukit Kuching, Kuala Selangor. According to Harian Metro, Kuala Selangor district police chief Superintendent Azaharudin Tajudin said police received a report at 3.30pm yesterday after the Year Six pupil was pronounced dead at Tanjong Karang Hospital. 'Initial investigations found the crash occurred at 6.45pm the previous day. The victim had been riding a Yamaha Ego Solaris motorcycle from Kampung Bukit Kuching to Kampung Sungai Buloh, Jeram. 'The Perodua Alza, driven by a male Form Five student, was heading from Jalan Rizab Haji Omar to Jalan Rizab Zazuli. 'Upon reaching the four-way junction, the victim is believed to have suddenly entered the intersection, leaving the driver no time to avoid the collision,' he was quoted as saying. Azaharudin added that the impact threw the girl onto the windscreen of the Alza before she landed on the road shoulder. 'She sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to Tanjong Karang Hospital, but was later confirmed dead. 'The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,' he said. He also confirmed that the Perodua Alza belonged to the teen's mother. 'The matter of whether the MPV was driven without the family's knowledge is still under investigation,' he added.
