100 men v one gorilla: who would win – and why has the question gone viral?

The Guardian29-04-2025
Name: 100 men v one gorilla.
Age: The debate seems to have begun in 2020, on Reddit, when a poster asked the question in a r/whowouldwin subreddit, a forum for hypothetical discussions on myriad subjects.
Wait, one gorilla debated against 100 men, on Reddit? Is that where politics has got to? No, that's where the discussion began, about who would win: 100 men or one gorilla?
At what? Chess? Life? Life would be interesting. No, a fight of course. A hundred men against one silverback gorilla.
Like when 100 Japanese kids played football against three professional footballers? Not really, because that actually happened (the kids lost 1-0). This is purely hypothetical.
It would be the way to settle it, once and for all: 100 men v 1 silverback. No rules (try explaining the Marquess of Queensberry Rules to an ape), anything goes. True, but animal rights people might have something to say about it.
Human rights people, too, possibly. Anyway, the debate has kicked off again, when the question was posed to X users last week. Since then it's been raging on Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, all your socials. Mr Beast even weighed in.
On whose side? Mr Beast is, despite the name, a man. One man.
I know! The influencer. Actually, he didn't really say who he thought would win.
100 men obviously – we used to hunt mammoths. With spears.
We've got spears, and you said no rules. OK, then the gorilla has an AK-47… Anyway, the point is, it's what one user called a 'real interweb discussion'.
Other examples of which are … Man v bear.
Bear obviously, plus I've seen Grizzly Man. Man v shark.
Duh! Shark! (see Jaws). Bear v shark. (Also a novel, interestingly.)
Blue dress v gold dress? The dress. Exactly. Those viral debates that gain momentum and plot twists with the addition of videos and memes.
But ultimately aren't that important? Maybe not, but perhaps they bring people together in a different way from the usual toxic conversation online. A humorous distraction.
From work, too. See also the real world.
And to return to 100 men v 1 gorilla: what about women? What about them?
Where do they stand on this important issue? Well, I'm afraid some are seeing it as a way to get rid of some unwanted men. 'Can I be the one that specifically picks the 100 men to fight the gorilla?' one posted. Followed by: 'I have a list.'
Do say: 'Yeah, but the silverback can not just lift – but throw – up to 815kg!'
Don't say: 'So when are we getting the reality TV show of this?'

'Wedding from hell' subjected guests to screaming children, a cash bar charging for WATER and food containing flies - leaving one attendee 'violently sick'

A woman revealed she was invited to 'a disaster of a wedding' where children screamed throughout the entire ceremony and she had to pay for water. Taking to Reddit, the woman, from the US, recounted what she called 'a mess' of a day- one so chaotic she ended up leaving early. From the unclear invitation to a chaotic ceremony, sweltering heat, and even a physical fight between family members, the guest claimed the whole day felt like a 'practical joke'. In the post the guest detailed how they received minimal information ahead of the event, just a time and place, with no wedding website or dress code guidance. They arrived to find the ceremony was outdoors on a blistering 95F (35C) day. However, to make matters worse, the ceremony was interrupted by screaming children whose parents failed to intervene. Things went downhill from there, as she discovered that at the bar even water wasn't free, and the venue was cash-only. It turns out dinner brought no relief as flies had descended on the buffet, and within hours, the guest says she became violently ill. She explained: 'There's FLIES ALL OVER THE FOOD. Seriously, all up in the food. I take the smallest amount possible to be polite. 'I was so hungry and desperate that I did take a few bites. Within hours, I was creating jobs for local plumbers. 'Next, dessert! Can't mess up dessert, right? Wrong. So wrong. Flies on the dessert, as expected by now. But how am I supposed to eat the dessert? 'There are no plates, napkins, forks, nothing. The buffet equipment has been cleared. So I watched as people walked around holding dessert in their hands.' Just when she thought it couldn't get any worse drunken family drama, out-of-control children, and a chaotic round of speeches, including one that triggered a physical altercation between the groom and the bride's brother, capped off the night. She explained: 'At this point, I just start taking notes for this post, six speeches in total, one of them actually good! Sweet, heartfelt, funny. I forgot where I was for a second. 'The rest… roasts, angry bride, brother started a fight with the groom. And I mean a literal fight. 'All I gathered was that it had something to do with the bride. The fight got taken to the lawn, and when people gathered to assist, I slipped out and came home.' She concluded: 'I truly don't feel like this was real life. Like this had to be a practical joke, right?? I may politely decline invitations I have no information about moving forward.' Many rushed to the comments to leave their own thoughts on the 'disastrous' wedding, with some questioning if it was legal to charge for water when selling alcohol. One person wrote: 'Not providing free water when you're selling booze is straight up illegal in my jurisdiction. 'The business and the duty manager could both get a hefty fine for violating the host responsibility conditions of their liquor license if they tried to charge for water here.' Another said: 'It's only required in licensed venues (ie where you can buy alcohol). Although customarily, most cafes and restaurants will provide tap water for free, they don't legally have to if they don't sell alcohol.' Someone else added: 'It doesn't sound like they hired anyone and this wasn't a business at all. 'The couple just chose a spot somewhere and set up their 'wedding'. This would also explain why there wasn't anyone to protect the food from insects or even from the heat which probably also contributed to OP's intestinal distress later on.' Another joked: 'This wasn't a wedding. It was a survival challenge.'

Parenting expert explains why you should never try and 'end' your child's tantrum

Tantrums can be tough to handle and a parenting psychologist has shared some advice about how to deal with a child mid-tantrum and what parents should and shouldn't do No parent relishes the moments when their children have tantrums, yet it's a common occurrence. Toddlers often resort to this behaviour because they lack the verbal skills to express their needs or frustrations. ‌ Today (Sunday, July 27) we celebrate Parents' Day, a day to appreciate parents for their unwavering love and commitment to nurturing their children, but it also serves as an opportunity for mums and dads to enhance their parenting techniques, such as managing tantrums. American parenting psychologist Dr Becky Kennedy has offered insights on how to cope with a child's meltdown and what actions to avoid. ‌ In a TikTok video posted by Thrive Parenting Network, Dr Kennedy emphasised that a parent's role is " not to end a tantrum ever." ‌ She elaborated: "The more energy I put into ending a tantrum the more my kid thinks I'm scared of their tantrum." The child psychology specialist pointed out that when parents attempt to stop a tantrum, they inadvertently project their own anxiety onto their child, resulting in heightened fear and a prolonged, more intense tantrum. She likened a tantrum to a "kind of explosion" and clarified that a parent's duty is to act as a "container" maintaining composure and ensuring the safety of their child. ‌ Dr Kennedy went on to say: "When I mean safe, sometimes during tantrums kids will start like throwing things or like I don't know they'll, you know, get something in their room." She emphasised that parents must put an end to certain behaviours, highlighting the significance of the phrase "I won't let you" as opposed to softer alternatives like "we don't" or "please stop". The parenting psychologist illustrated her point with the example: "I'm not gonna let you throw that vase." ‌ She went on to explain: "That's the boundary, and then what I'm going to say to myself honestly is like a mantra while I kind of just wait it out. "I might say to myself 'I'm safe, this isn't an emergency, I can cope with this.' That's actually my favourite mantra because the only reason we get activated during our kids' tantrums is because our body kind of confuses whose feelings are whose." ‌ She further explained that when parents feel their own bodies becoming unsafe, it's often a reaction to wanting to "shut down" the child's tantrum. Reiterating her advice, she said that reassuring yourself of safety is effective, as the body "responds really well to being told this." The TikTok video has amassed 62,400 views and more than 4,500 likes, along with numerous comments from parents sharing their experiences. ‌ One parent remarked: "I like this. It's probably hardest when the tantrum happens in the middle of trying to get a time-sensitive chore or thing done." They added the challenge of dealing with a tantrum while juggling responsibilities: "Like a tantrum in the middle of trying to get to school, after which I need to get to work.." Another expressed gratitude, saying: "Your 'this is not an emergency' line might have made motherhood 1000x better for me." A third shared their struggle: "Keep your body calm sounds so simple but feels impossible in the moment."
