‘Disgusting… misogyny cuts across party lines' Mahua Moitra slams TMC colleagues over gangrape comment

Mint8 hours ago

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Saturday reacted to the party's decision to distance itself from the controversial remarks made by leaders Kalyan Banerjee and Madan Mitra regarding the Kolkata gangrape incident.
Taking to social media platform X, Moitra said that 'Misogyny in India cuts across party lines. What differentiates TMC is that we condemn these disgusting comments no matter who makes them.'.
She also reposted TMC's post condemning the comments made by MP Banerjee and MLA Mitra.
Earlier on Saturday, Moitra said that the probe in the rape incident of a female student is going on war footing and stressed that TMC-led West Bengal government has "zero tolerance" for crime against women.
"College student's rape investigation on war footing - KolkataPolice identified & arrested all accused within 12 hrs, sent to 4 day custody. TMC & state govt has zero tolerance for crime against women - swiftest action taken in rape & POCSO cases. Unlike BJP who glorify, garland & reward rapists & killers, " Moitra who represents the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency said in social media post X on Saturday.
The comments comes after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched an all-out attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal over alleged gangrape incident in Kolkata, with the party demanding the resignation of the Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee.
A female student was allegedly gang-raped inside the South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata's Kasba on Wednesday, June 25. Kolkata police has formed a five-member Special team to investigate the incident.
The three accused, Manojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, who the Police have named, have been remanded to police custody till July 1
South Suburban Division DC Bidisha Kalita on Saturday said that the crime scene was recreated by the police, and the statement of the victim has been recorded.

US Senate narrowly advances Trumps' controversial One Big Beautiful Bill Act in a 51-49 turnout

Washington, June 29 (UNI) In a nail-biting vote, the Republican-led U.S. Senate has pushed forward President Donald Trump's huge 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act' - a key move towards getting it passed before the upcoming July 4 break. The mammoth 940-page bill scraped through a procedural vote late on Saturday night, 51-49. Two Republicans surprisingly sided with Democrats in opposing the measure, highlighting its divisive nature, reports New York Post. The vote now allows formal debate to kick off on the legislation. The bill aims to make Trump's 2017 tax cuts permanent, boost spending on defence and border security, and cut money for certain welfare programmes. President Trump hailed the outcome on Truth Social, calling it a "GREAT VICTORY." Trump has lobbied for House and Senate Republicans to fast-track the legislation so it lands on his desk by his self-imposed July 4 deadline. The measure would make Trump's 2017 tax cuts permanent, end taxation on tips and overtime, boost border security funding and scrap green-energy tax credits passed during the Biden administration. However, Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer criticised Republicans for rushing the process, demanding the entire bill be read aloud on the Senate floor to ensure proper scrutiny. After the bill is read, lawmakers will have up to 20 hours to debate its contents before a final vote. The House of Representatives already narrowly approved a version of this bill in May. If the Senate passes it, the bill will return to the House for final approval before landing on the President's desk for signing into law. This bill is a cornerstone of Trump's economic agenda, aiming to cement his tax cuts while boosting defence and border spending, often at the expense of social programmes. Its passage would significantly reshape US fiscal policy. UNI ANV SSP

Puri stampede: Odisha Govt orders administrative inquiry

Bhubaneswar, June 29 (UNI) With the tragic death of three devotees and at least fifty others injured in a stampede near Sri Gundicha Temple in Odisha's Puri during Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra during wee hours on Sunday sparking shock waves across the state and exposing the gaping holes in the efficiency of government machinery, Odisha Chief Minister has issued a statement tending apology and ordered an administrative inquiry and suspended two police officers of Superintendent of Police rank. The corrective measures and cracking whips on the officers in the charge of Rath Yatra observance were very much on the cards given the fact the BJP Government in the state was on the line of fire due to the inordinate delay in the pulling of chariots, stampede-like situation and indiscriminate distribution of cordon passes during the nine-day annual festival of Lord Jagannath that commenced on Friday. Expressing deep regret over the stampede deaths, Chief Minister Mohan Majhi had earlier tendered an apology over it and owning moral responsibility for today's tragic death. A high-level administrative inquiry has been constituted under the stewardship of the development commissioner (an officer of chief secretary rank) to detect the lapses and negligence on part of the authorities. Besides the Collector and SP Puri has been removed from Puri with immediate effect. Two police officers- deputy commissioner of police, Bishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhee- were placed under suspension for failure on their part to effectively carry out the crowd management. 'The Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath is the pride of Odisha. Negligence in discharging duty will not be tolerated. All those responsible for today's stampede will be meted out exemplary punishment', Chief Minister Majhi said in a statement. Meanwhile the State Government has announced Rs 25 lakh ex-gratia compensation to bereaved families who lost their loved ones in the stampede. The three victims – Basanti Sahu, Premakant Mohanty and Pravati Das- died of asphyxiation as the crowd trampled over them. "My government and I seek apology from all Jagannath devotees. We express our condolences to the families of those devotees whose lives were lost at Sharadhabali and pray to Mahaprabhu Jagannath to imbibe them the strength to bear with the loss of their near and dear ones," the CM said in a statement. The Opposition BJD and Congress also strongly criticized the BJP Government here for abysmal failure on part of the government to control the crowd. BJD President Naveen Patnaik assailing the government said the incident laid bare the glaring failure to ensure a safe and orderly Rath Yatra for devotees. 'I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the three devotees who have lost their lives in the tragic stampede at Saradhabali, Puri and I pray to Mahaprabhu Jagannatha for the swift recovery of the devotees injured in this devastating incident', Naveen Patnaik stated in 'X'. The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee Bhakta Charan Das also commenting on the same line lambasted the government. The mishap took place at around 4.20 am in front of three chariots of Lord Jagannath and his His siblings—Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra. Poor crowd management and inadequate police deployment resulted in the tragic mishap. There was no presence of police or security forces anywhere near the chariots as the crowd surged to catch a glimpse of the deities during morning hours. It was some of the devotees and local youths who tried to control the crowd and saved several people from getting stuck in the stampede. But for their timely voluntary act, the death toll might have been much higher, said eyewitnesses. UNI XC RKM

CM Rekha Gupta, Delhi BJP chief hail 'Mann Ki Baat' for popularising social heroes

New Delhi: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva on Sunday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for becoming the voice of the people through his radio show 'Mann Ki Baat' and introducing social heroes to countrymen. After listening to the 123rd episode of PM Modi's radio show, Sachdeva said, "The Prime Minister's Mann Ki Baat address is truly the voice of the people. He provides comprehensive information on various topics, introduces new subjects, and highlights matters that often don't reach the common public..." Sachdeva listened to the episode at Hauz Khas market along with BJP National Vice President Baijayant Jay Panda and MLA Satish Upadhyay. The Delhi BJP chief said, "Today, PM Modi mentioned International Yoga Day, Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, football's popularity in Bodoland and Pune's green warrior Ramesh Kharmale." "I wish every citizen listens to 'Mann Ki Baat' and aligns with his family members," he said. Delhi Chief Minister Gupta also issued a message on the social media handle of the Chief Minister's Office and posted a message related to the radio show, which read: "Across India, individuals and communities are becoming catalysts of change. Their unwavering commitment to conservation is not only protecting nature but also safeguarding the future for generations to come. #MannKiBaat." Another BJP leader and former MP, Ramesh Bidhuri, said the BJP follows the ideology of nation-building, and PM Modi is working on this mission. "Former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee also followed this ideology and launched schemes for linking rivers, roads and building AIIMS. In the past 10 years, Congress failed to achieve anything. Now, PM Modi is working hard to fulfil the aspirations of 140 crore citizens and delivering to them what they deserve," Bidhuri said. The radio show 'Mann Ki Baat' highlights heroes who undertake good work, he said. "People working for public welfare and social good, get mentioned in the programme – be it water or environment conservation, work for the disabled or the youth," Bidhuri said. He said that PM Modi's show shares information about social performers, living in remote areas, so that it inspires others to emulate them and serve the country and society.
