Dunne revels in fairytale as Martin rises to occasion for Tyrone
Kerr had been a vital part of the Red Hand's sea son but his move to the Premier League side, beginning from 1 July, meant he had to sit out the decider.
Martin came into the side in Kerr's place and nabbed three points as Kerry were edged out in heart-breaking fashion at Cedral St Conleth's Park.
Speaking to RTÉ Sport after the 1-16 to 1-15 victory, Donnelly revealed: "Joel's father is just beside me and he's the happiest man here.
"Look, we knew from the first of July that Joel was a West Ham player. From the very first trial last September, I joked with him, I said, 'Joel, we'll push it back a week' and you never think it's going to be going to get this far.
"I was just on the phone to him. He's in London. He's starting his career tomorrow morning and I'm so delighted, but isn't it just unbelievable that the man that came in for him, Diarmuid Martin, scored three points, including the winner at the end?
"You couldn't script it, could you? You couldn't script it."
While it was a special day for Donnelly, he couldn't help but feel sympathy for his counterparts in Kerry, having already experienced losing such a big game previously.
He admitted a contentious piece of play fell in favour of the Ulster county.
"Look, I feel so sorry for Kerry because I've been there and I thought another one had gone from me. We got the luck at the end, it was a really good tackle from Elliott [Kerr].
"Another referee might have given a penalty and when that final whistle went, I just couldn't believe it. I thought we'd lost another one, but thanks Christ we've got it. It's just emotion, it's just relief.
"It was incredible. What these boys did four point down with 15 minutes to go, it's just them. We're standing on the sideline and you just hope they'll go for it. You can't do anything. I have to say, the crowd, the atmosphere, this was incredible and I think it was a brilliant game for everyone to watch."
Wayne Quillinan was gracious in defeat as well as filled with pride, ruing the closing moments of a classic as Tyrone bagged late points to win the day.
The referee's decision not to award Ben Kelliher a penalty was undoubtedly on his mind as he instead turned thoughts to his own side.
"It has been the story of it all year, just never say die, never let up, never give up," he explained.
"I think they showed that again today, they've grit, determination and everything. They just have everything you want, the characteristics of a brilliant, special team. And I'm gutted that the game ended that way.
"When guys are so young, the first thing you have to tell them is that we absolutely believe in them, and have confidence in what we're doing.
"And they had that today. We came up here with full belief that we were going to win that game. And unfortunately, it didn't happen for us."
Quillinan didn't want to comment on the officiating in the closing stages, saying "it's for another day's conversation."
The Kerry boss added: "I'm just hurting now for my boys inside. It's a tough dressing room, but it's up to me to pick them up and tell them how proud we are of them, how they represented the county with such pride and such distinction for fellas so young.
"They showed such maturity, Down at home, they can be nothing but proud of that Kerry minor team. They're just a fantastic group of players."

Donegal set up a repeat of the 2014 All-Ireland SFC decider with a ruthless dismissal of Meath in the weekend's second semi-final. A trio of second-half goals from Oisín Gallen, Ciaran Moore and Conor O'Donnell saw them deliver a bracing reality check for the Leinster finalists, whose unexpected adventure came to a crushing conclusion. The writing had probably been on the wall well before that, Meath having made poor use of the breeze in the first half, blazing about six two-point efforts wide of the posts. Donegal, a model of efficiency by comparison, worked scores with their familiar running game. The prolific midfielder Michael Langan clipped over a first-half brace, as did Gallen, while Michael Murphy finished the half with five, including a two-point free. Leading by five at the break and with a substantial breeze to come, this appeared to be heading only one way even then. Keith Curtis and Eoghan Frayne floated over early second-half scores for Meath but it was a false dawn. Shortly after the 40th-minute mark, a long Shaun Patton kickout was seized upon by Caolan McColgan, who set up Gallen, the corner-forward firing a shot into the top corner. That opened up clear blue water between the sides and when Moore drilled home the second after a rapid counter-attack in the 49th minute, the game was as good as over. There was no let-up as Donegal padded out the score from there, Paddy McBrearty coming on to lob over 0-03. Conor O'Donnell put a further gloss on things, collecting a low pass from Gallen to score the third goal. Meath bow out in demoralising fashion, and McGuinness and his charges progress to a final date with Kerry, the same opposition that confronted them in the final year of the manager's first reign 11 years ago.

Donegal cruise past Meath to set up All-Ireland decider with Kerry
DONEGAL 3-26 (3-1-24) MEATH 0-15 (0-2-11) Donegal and Kerry will clash in their second-ever All-Ireland and first since 2014 after the Ulster champions ransacked Meath in this All-Ireland semi-final. Second-half goals by Oisín Gallen, Ciarán Moore and Conor O'Donnell augmented a five-point half-time lead (0-13 to 0-8) on a 20-point cruise of passage to the final. This was a walk in the park and by the end they were strolling through a gassed Meath defence. Donegal could even afford to retire Michael Murphy from the game in the 45th minute with the scoreline reading eight points in their favour. The decision was a topic of conversation for the 82,000 Croke Park crowd going by the murmuring that followed his departure but it was calculated. Gallen's 42nd minute goal coupled with Murphy's last point and last act of the game a minute later catapulted Donegal into that heading. When Ciarán Moore was put through to bulge the net a second time seven minutes later after a great turnover by Finbarr Roarty initiated the attack, the difference had widened to 11 points. A Shaun Patton 45 following a Billy Hogan save from Ciarán Thompson stretched the margin to 12. Conor Duke and Eoghan Frayne stemmed the haemorrhaging albeit temporarily as the wound gushed with a flurry of Donegal scores. After an excellent start by Donegal, profligacy was the name of game for the two teams for most of the half. Meath scored six times in the first half but registered nine wides and dropped two short. Donegal didn't hit their first wide until the 17th minute by which time they had six points kicked into the breeze, which included a two-point free by Murphy. Meath themselves had raised two orange flags themselves via Frayne and Ruairí Kinsella. Kinsella's in the 13th minute had brought Meath within one and after Michael Langan's first point Keith Curtis soon cancelled it out. However, Meath had to wait 17 minutes before their next score, which came courtesy of Curtis. In that period between those points, they struck three wides and dropped a couple of attempts short. Donegal struck five in a 10-minute period but were hitting the target some of the time and their lead expanded to five by the half-hour mark as Meath counted the loss of Bryan Mention to a leg injury. As Donegal threatened to turn the screw, Donal Keogan kept out a Conor O'Donnell shot in the 31st minute and Hugh McFadden's effort was denied by Billy Hogan a couple of minutes later after Caolan McColgan's point attempt struck the post. Successive Meath points by Curtis and Jordan Morris gave the Leinster runners-up a little respite but no sooner had Morris scored his point that it was being cancelled out by Oisín Gallen's second score and Murphy had goal on his mind with the penultimate attack of the game but settled for a point.
