Small, room-temperature quantum computers that use light on the horizon after breakthrough, scientists say

Scientists have demonstrated that a photonic qubit — a quantum bit powered by a particle of light — can detect and correct its own errors while running at room temperature. They say it is a foundational step toward scalable quantum processors.
In a new study published June 4 in the journal Nature, researchers at Canadian quantum computing startup Xanadu created a so-called "Gottesman–Kitaev–Preskill" (GKP) state directly on a silicon chip.
GKP states are a type of quantum state that spreads information across multiple photons in a pattern that enables small errors to be spotted and corrected. This means that each qubit is capable of correcting itself, without needing to be bundled into large arrays of redundant qubits — a common requirement in today's error-correction methods.
It marks the first time this type of error-resistant quantum state has been generated using a process compatible with conventional chip manufacturing, the scientists said.
The breakthrough suggests that error-correcting quantum states could be produced with the same tools used to manufacture conventional computer chips — bringing reliable, room-temperature quantum hardware a step closer to reality.
The qubit-cooling conundrum
Quantum computers work very differently from the classical machines we use today. Classical computers store information in binary bits, represented as either 1s or 0s. Quantum systems, meanwhile, use qubits that can exist in a "superposition" of both states. This enables them to solve complex calculations in parallel, and they can one day perform far beyond the reach of conventional systems.
But qubits are notoriously fragile. Even the smallest fluctuations in temperature, electromagnetic radiation or environmental noise can disrupt a qubit's state and corrupt its data.
To guard against this, many quantum systems operate at temperatures close to absolute zero (minus 459.67 degrees Fahrenheit or minus 273.15 degrees Celsius) using complex cooling systems to maintain "coherence" — the fragile quantum connection through which qubits perform calculations.

While this cooling helps preserve quantum information, it also makes quantum computers bulky, expensive and impractical to scale. Xanadu's solution seeks to address this by using photons — particles of light that don't require deep cooling — to build qubits that run on silicon chips at room temperature.
The team's GKP demonstration tackles another key challenge: quantum error correction. Most quantum systems today rely on groupings of multiple physical qubits that work together to detect and fix errors, known as a "logical qubit." Xanadu's photonic qubit sidesteps this by handling correction within each individual qubit, simplifying the hardware and paving the way for more scalable designs.
"GKP states are, in a sense, the optimal photonic qubit, since they enable logic gates and error correction at room temperature and using relatively straightforward, deterministic operations," Zachary Vernon, CTO of hardware at Xanadu, said in a statement.

The result builds on Xanadu's earlier development of Aurora, a modular quantum computing platform that connects multiple photonic chips using optical fiber. While Aurora addressed the challenge of scaling across a network, this new chip focuses on making each qubit more robust — a critical requirement for building fault-tolerant systems.
Xanadu representatives said the next challenge was reducing optical loss, which happens when photons are scattered or absorbed as they travel through the chip's components.

3 Quantum Computing Stocks That Wall Street Is Most Bullish About Right Now

Peter Lynch has been a longtime proponent of buying what you know. I doubt that either legendary investor would think for a second about buying quantum computing stocks. And I suspect that many nonlegendary investors who have jumped on the quantum computing bandwagon truly understand the underlying technology they're betting on. However, some Wall Street analysts are paid big bucks to research quantum computing companies in-depth. To do their jobs, they must have a solid understanding of exactly what those companies are doing. It stands to reason, therefore, that investors who want to profit from quantum computing but don't fully understand it might want to pay attention to what analysts think. With that in mind, here are the three quantum computing stocks that Wall Street is most bullish about right now. 1. Sealsq Sealsq (NASDAQ: LAES) isn't a run-of-the-mill quantum computing stock. The Geneva, Switzerland-based company isn't even developing a quantum computer. Instead, it offers products and services intended to protect data and systems against the threats posed by quantum computers. In particular, Sealsq makes quantum-resistant chips targeted for use in defense, finance, and industrial applications, as well as Internet of Things devices. The company also built post-quantum root-of-trust and public key infrastructure (PKI) services for digital signatures, email security, and secure communications. Even though Sealsq's share price has skyrocketed around 380% over the past 12 months, Wall Street thinks the stock can go much higher. The 12-month price target for this quantum computing stock is nearly 79% above the current share price, according to LSEG (OTC: LNST.Y). I should note, though, that price target reflects the view of only one analyst. Investing in Sealsq is a risky proposition despite this analyst's optimism. The company continues to lose money. It expects to generate revenue of only $16 million to $20 million this year. With a market cap of around $408 million, much of Sealsq's growth prospects are already baked into the share price. 2. Arqit Quantum You might feel a tinge of déjà vu with the next quantum computing stock on the list. Like Sealsq, Arqit Quantum (NASDAQ: ARQQ) focuses on protecting against quantum computers rather than developing quantum computers. The company is also headquartered across the Atlantic, but in London, England, instead of Geneva, Switzerland. Arqit has three products. Its SKA-Platform (the SKA stands for symmetric key agreement) is a scalable platform for quantum-safe networking. NetworkSecure is a software application for protecting VPN (virtual private network) communications. Encryption Intelligence is Arqit's encryption risk advisory service that helps customers assess their encryption risks. There are more similarities with Sealsq, too. Arqit stock has delivered huge gains over the past 12 months, soaring more than 320%. Like Sealsq, LSEG surveyed only one analyst who covers Arqit. However, that lone analyst is quite bullish about the stock. The price target for Arqit reflects an upside potential of 35%. Want more déjà vu? Arqit is losing money hand over fist. The company isn't generating much revenue, either -- only $67,000 in the first half of fiscal year 2025. That translates to a premium valuation for the stock with Arqit's market cap hovering around $518 million. Like Sealsq, this stock offers a high-risk, but potentially high-reward, proposition. 3. Quantum Computing Inc. Yes, we do have a bona fide developer of quantum computers in the group. The aptly named Quantum Computing Inc. (NASDAQ: QUBT) markets QCi DIRAC-3, an entropy quantum computer that the company calls "the world's most powerful quantum analog machine." Quantum Computing Inc.'s primary focus is on integrated photonics and nonlinear quantum optics. The main things you need to know about this technology are that it uses particles of light for computing and is highly promising. Again, LSEG received input from only one analyst for Quantum Computing Inc. But that analyst really likes the stock and set a 12-month price target that's nearly 32% higher than the current share price. If Quantum Computing Inc. indeed moves higher, it will add to a jaw-dropping 2,450% gain over the past 12 months. Unlike Sealsq and Arqit Quantum, Quantum Computing Inc. reported a profit in its latest quarter. Don't get too excited, though: It was mainly due to a non-cash gain on the mark-to-market valuation of the company's warrant liability resulting from its merger with QPhoton three years ago. Without that benefit, Quantum Computing Inc. would have posted a net loss. This stock, like the other two on our list, is a speculative bet for investors. However, the company's thin film lithium niobate (TFLN) wafers hold tremendous potential in photonic quantum computing. If this potential is realized, Quantum Computing Inc. could grow much larger than its current market cap of around $2.6 billion. Should you buy stock in Quantum Computing right now? By Nell Mackenzie LONDON (Reuters) -Hedge funds fled technology stocks at the fastest pace in 12 months in the latest week, just as the S&P 500 reached all-time highs, a note to Goldman Sachs clients and seen by Reuters said. The S&P 500, which includes seven tech stocks in its top 10 largest constituents by market value, has surged roughly 28% since its 2025 low, while the Nasdaq Composite has jumped 38% in that time. As of Friday, the S&P 500's forward price to earnings ratio, which reflects the value of a company's stock relative to its projected future earnings, was 23.11, around five-month highs, according to LSEG/Datastream. "U.S. equities valuations (such as price earnings ratios) are now 30% higher than their recent decade average, while 10-year yields remain stubbornly high and volatile. The future path of equities may depend partly on a decline in long-term rates; however, we do not seem to be there yet," Lombard Odier Investment Managers head of macro Florian Ielpo said in a note on Friday. Globally, hedge funds sold tech stocks, some of the most richly valued equities, more than any other sector last week, the Goldman Sachs note said. Rather than shorting the sector, hedge funds tended to ditch long bets and exit trades, the bank said. A short bet is designed to profit from a drop in an asset price. This week's exodus was the largest the bank had seen since July 2024, Goldman Sachs said. Hedge funds fleeing tech stocks centered on trading in North America and Europe. Every kind of tech stock was sold, including semiconductor chip companies, as well as those in software and IT services, the bank said. Meanwhile, shares in consumer staples - companies that sell items that people purchase regardless of economic conditions - were among the most net bought U.S. stock sectors this week, Goldman said. Hedge funds piled into these stocks for the fourth straight week and their trades were almost entirely long positions - those that will profit if the stock prices rise. The kind of companies whose shares hedge funds bought included those that sell food and beverages and personal care products.

I loved the Galaxy Z Flip 7's new cover screen until the software ruined it

I love flip phone foldables. More specifically, I love flip phones with big cover screens. Being able to comfortably reply to texts, check notifications, and use apps on a large, high-quality cover screen is one of my favorite things about the flip phone form factor — and it's why I was so excited to get my hands on the Galaxy Z Flip 7. For the last couple of years, Samsung's cover screen tech has paled in comparison to its competitors, namely Motorola in the US. For all Samsung has gotten right with the Z Flip series, its small, low-resolution, and low-refresh-rate cover displays have always lagged behind the competition. But not so this year. I've had the Galaxy Z Flip 7 for just about a day, and I've spent most of my time playing with the new cover screen. It's a massive improvement over Samsung's previous attempts and by far the best we've seen on a Z Flip yet. But as much as I love the hardware, Samsung's software greatly holds everything back. NaN % The Galaxy Z Flip 7's cover screen hardware is exceptional Joe Maring / Android Authority I want to start by talking about what Samsung got right, which, admittedly, is a lot. The most obvious upgrade over the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is the display size, which has increased from 3.4 inches to 4.1 inches. That new full-screen design, combined with impressively thin bezels, is a truly impressive sight to behold. Apps, like Telegram and Slack, are easy to navigate and don't feel cramped in the slightest. I can see a long list of notifications without scrolling, and typing on the cover screen's keyboard is far more comfortable than it was on the Flip 6. An extra 0.7 inches may not sound like much, but in practice, it's a night-and-day difference. And as much as I've enjoyed the cover screen's extra real estate, that's not the only hardware upgrade I've been thrilled with. The resolution jump from 720 x 748 to 948 x 1048 is immediately noticeable. Where the Flip 6's cover screen looked grainy and fuzzy to my eyes, the Flip 7's is as sharp as a tack. Joe Maring / Android Authority The upgrade from a 60Hz refresh rate to 120Hz is even more apparent, making the cover screen feel fluid and responsive in a way no Z Flip cover screen has felt previously. Additionally, the brightness increase (from 1600 nits up to a staggering 2600 nits) has been immensely helpful when using the Flip 7 in direct sunlight. I've been waiting for the day that Samsung finally released a Z Flip with a cover screen that didn't feel stuck in the past. Having now used the Z Flip 7, I can confidently say that day has finally come. At least, it has from a hardware perspective. But the software is another story Joe Maring / Android Authority Unfortunately, it's a different conversation we need to have about the cover screen software. In Samsung's efforts to springboard the Flip 7's cover screen hardware into the modern era, the software was largely left behind. Samsung created a big, bright, and sharp display I want to interact with, but numerous roadblocks create a lot of unnecessary friction. The most obvious complaint is that of using apps on the cover screen. Samsung still requires you to jump through extra hoops and use Good Lock if you want to use anything other than Google Maps, Messages, Netflix, or YouTube. It is annoying, though Samsung has slightly simplified the process this year, and it's only something you have to do once. However, this perfectly highlights a far bigger issue. Why create such a high-quality and capable cover screen yet withhold such basic functionality from it? Once the Good Lock widget is on your cover screen, you see all of the apps you've chosen, along with a + icon to add more. Presumably, tapping that icon would allow you to add more apps directly from the cover screen. But no. Instead, it displays an 'Open phone to continue' pop-up, forcing you to open the Flip 7 to proceed. Unfortunately, this is something you see a lot of. Want to customize your current clock face? You need to open the Flip 7. Want to add a new clock design? Open the Flip 7. Want to edit widgets on one of your home screens? Time to open the Flip 7! Even some app notifications refuse to display the notification content on the cover screen, instead telling you to 'Open the phone and check the notification panel for details.' There are other issues, too. You can't customize the quick settings panel on the cover screen, and the toggles that are present are extremely limited compared to the main display (such as only being able to toggle Wi-Fi on/off and not being able to select a specific Wi-Fi network). Also, while you can reply to texts and emails, you have to use the terrible, horrible Samsung Keyboard even if you've set something like Gboard as your default keyboard. I just have one question for Samsung: Why? Why create such a high-quality and capable cover screen yet withhold such basic functionality from it? These are limitations carried over from previous Z Flips, and it feels lazy on Samsung's part not to fix them for the Flip 7's upgraded cover screen. What could have been Joe Maring / Android Authority Sometimes while using the Galaxy Z Flip 7, I'm thrilled with the phone's cover screen. The bigger size is terrific, the resolution and refresh rate upgrades are fantastic, and every interaction is better than one on the Z Flip 6's cover screen. But when I see that 'Open phone to continue' pop-up or am forced to type a typo-ridden message with Samsung Keyboard, the magic fizzles. Samsung finally has a cover screen that's just as good as the competition, and it's a damn shame it's still held back by frustrating software like this. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 easily has the best cover screen of any Z Flip to date, and I wish I could thoroughly love it. But considering how much more it could have been, I'm left feeling a bit disappointed.
