Winston Churchill's first bachelor pad up for sale for £3.75m

Former Prime Minister Winston Churchill's Mayfair bachelor pad in London could be yours for £3.75million.
The two-bedroom second floor flat spans 1,087 sq. ft. and is being listed for the first time in a decade.
105 Mount Street became Churchill's pied-à-terre in August 1900, when at the age of 25, leased the property from his cousin, Charles 'Sunny' Spencer-Churchill.
Situated on the doorstep of the five-star Connaught Hotel, the Mayfair flat is located in a grand mansion block designed in 1888 by architect Sir Ernest George in an early renaissance style.
The Connaught Hotel, previously called The Coburg, would deliver meals to nearby Mayfair residents, including to 105 Mount Street.
According to joint sole selling agents Wetherell and Clifton Property Partners, the hotel's ultra-posh takeaway service sparked Churchill's love of Pol Roger champagne, Hine rare cognac, oysters, steak and kidney pie and roast beef and Yorkshire pudding.
The ground floor of the building is home to the famous Sautter cigar shop, which displays some of Churchill's favourite cigar brands and other memorabilia.
Churchill lived at 105 Mount Street from 1900 to 1905, before moving to Bolton Street in London.
The Mayfair flat provided a base for Churchill when, after making his name as a soldier and war correspondent, he launched his political career, being elected to the Houses of Parliament as the Conservative candidate for Oldham in October 1900.
Churchill went on to become British Prime Minister in 1940 during the Second World War and he served as an MP for more than 60 years until 1964.
Speaking to This is Money, Peter Wetherell, founder and executive chairman of Wetherell, said: 'When Winston lived at the Mount Street apartment he had just entered Parliament as an MP and it was whilst living there that he first met Clementine, who would later become his wife Clementine Churchill.
'Whilst living at the apartment Churchill wrote some of his first famous speeches and books.
'In 1905 Churchill published a two volume biography of his father Lord Randolph Churchill and the proceeds enabled Winston to buy a house in Mayfair.
'When Winston lived at the apartment he used the second bedroom as a dining room and employed a cook whose domain was the adjoining kitchen.'
The ninth Duke of Marlborough sold the flat in the 1940s and it is now being listed for sale for the first time in 10 years, having been renovated throughout.
The flat has a spacious reception room which provides a large living area and a dining area in a spacious bay window within the room.
There is also a high-end main bedroom suite with an ensuite bathroom and a second bedroom and fully fitted kitchen.
Mr Wetherell said: 'The apartment provides an ideal London base for a family wanting a home in the heart of the capital.
'With its links to Sir Winston Churchill the globally famous prime minister we anticipate interest in the apartment from buyers from around the world. It's an opportunity to buy a slice of British history.'
Hugo Miller, an associate at Clifton Property Partners, said: 'Mount Street and its surrounding streets and gardens make up the most exclusive urban village in London where international luxury brands sit alongside heritage craftspeople and Michelin star dining.
'The fashion boutiques of Bond Street are just a short walk away across Berkeley Square and the green expanses of Hyde Park and Green Park are also within close walking distance.'

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has previously called for a mandatory 'tourist levy' for those visiting the city with Edinburgh already set to introduce a charge Keir Starmer should give local leaders powers to impose tourist taxes to help fund cash-strapped public services, a new report says. ‌ The Autonomy think-tank warns councils across the country lack the powers to respond to the strain on infrastructure caused by tourism. The report's authors say they should be able to establish "tourist taxes", which already exist in some areas of European holiday hotspots including Spain and France. ‌ They say: "Such a tax would begin to undo the heavy toll that UK Government austerity has heaped upon local councils over the last decade." It also calls for an "English right to roam" covering woodlands, rivers and the green belt. It follows a warning to Brit tourists planning all-inclusive holidays to Spain. ‌ Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has previously called for a mandatory "tourist levy" for those visiting the city with Edinburgh already set to introduce a charge to raise up to £50million-per-year from July 2026. There are also reports Deputy PM Angela Rayner has been pushing for councils to be allowed to tax tourism. But recently No10 said there are "no plans" for a tourist tax in England. They added: "Places can already choose to introduce a levy on overnight stays through working with their local tourism sector, using the accommodation Business Improvement District model. "Tourism obviously plays an important role in the UK's economy. Inbound tourism is the UK's third largest service export. The UK is the seventh most-visited country in the world, and we're committed to continuing to support the sector." ‌ Will Stronge, Chief Executive at the Autonomy Institute, told The Mirror: "Tourism must no longer be treated as an extractive industry built on carbon-intensive travel and precarious labour. "That's why we're calling for, amongst other things, the introduction of a local tourist tax: a fair, targeted measure that would fund the maintenance of public services and protects natural environments. "It empowers communities to invest in the infrastructure they sustain but too often see exploited for private gain. This is a vital step toward reducing over-tourism, restoring democratic control, and ensuring that leisure contributes to - rather than undermines - climate and social goals."

Yorkshire Water boss paid 'extra' £1.3 million from firm's offshore parent company despite 'dire' environmental record and hikes to bills

A water company boss was handed more than £1.3 million in 'extra' pay from an offshore firm, despite its abysmal record on pollution and increasing household bills. Chief executive Nicola Shaw pocketed two payments of £660,000 in the last two years from Yorkshire Water's parent company Kelda Holdings, in addition to her salary with the beleaguered utilities firm. Yorkshire Water was allowed to raise average annual household bills by 41 per cent last year, and this summer introduced a hosepipe ban for its 5.5 million customers. It was ordered to pay £40 million in the spring to address its 'serious failures' over wastewater and sewage, and was also separately fined nearly £1 million last month for polluting a watercourse with chlorine, causing the death of hundreds of fish. Yorkshire Water is one of the six water companies currently banned from paying bonuses under Government action designed to prevent bosses who 'oversee poor environmental and customer outcomes' from receiving extra money. But figures showed Ms Shaw received just over £1.3 million between 2023 and 2025 from Kelda, in addition to her Yorkshire Water salary of around £689,000 per year - remuneration which was reduced by about one-third after she decided to forgo her bonus before the Government performance-related pay ban came in. The Kelda money is 'a fixed fee for investor-related work' performed by Ms Shaw for the parent company 'and complies fully with expectations and reporting requirements', Yorkshire Water said. Including the offshore company payments, she has been awarded more than £3 million in total pay over three years since she joined the firm in 2022, according to analysis first reported by the Guardian. Ofwat, the water regulator, is now investigating. Ms Shaw's earnings have infuriated environmental campaign groups. Amy Fairman, head of campaigns for River Action, said: 'Yorkshire Water has just been fined over £900,000 for polluting a watercourse with millions of litres of chlorinated water, killing hundreds of fish, yet its CEO is quietly handed an extra £1.3 million through an offshore firm. 'This is business as usual in a system that rewards environmental destruction and shields those responsible. 'Until executives are held criminally accountable, not just cushioned by shareholders, nothing will change. 'And unless we see a complete overhaul of the water industry, one that finally ends the failed privatisation experiment, this scandalous cycle will continue.' The Ilkley Clean River Group has now written to Kelda chairman Vanda Murray, asking her to justify Ms Shaw's pay given Yorkshire Water's dismal record under her watch. The campaigners wrote: 'To the customer, the additional payments to Ms Shaw look like a way of "working around" the fact that bonuses were causing public outrage and subsequently banned by government. 'There is in effect no change to eye-watering salaries at the top of Yorkshire Water.' A Yorkshire Water spokesman said Ms Shaw's work for Kelda Group included 'investor engagement, financial oversight, and management of the Kelda Group, which is recognised by a fee of £660,000 paid by shareholders'. He added: 'This is a conscious governance decision: we do not believe that work done on investor-related activities should be paid for by Yorkshire Water customers' bills. 'This fee, which has remained unchanged year on year, reflects the critical importance of the work during this period that was led by Nicola in securing long-term investment for Yorkshire Water. 'We remain focused on our long-term commitment to delivering better outcomes for customers, communities, and the environment across the region.' It was reported tonight that Ofwat's chief executive David Black is due to resign, ahead of the watchdog's planned abolition by ministers.
