Lebanon: Security officer killed in clash with armed suspects in Tripoli

Shafaq News7 hours ago

Shafaq News – Tripoli
A Lebanese security officer was killed and two others injured during a raid on armed suspects in northern Lebanon, local media reported on Saturday.
The confrontation reportedly broke out on Al-Miatein Street in Tripoli as Internal Security Forces from the Information Branch stormed an apartment to apprehend wanted men. Several suspects were detained during the operation.
A security source quoted by Al-Joumhouria newspaper described the detainees as militants plotting a large-scale attack, tying their plans to the recent Mar Elias Church bombing in Damascus and wider regional tensions involving Israel.
On June 22, a suicide bombing at Mar Elias Church killed 25 people and wounded dozens, with the jihadist group Saraya Ansar al-Sunna later claiming responsibility.

Iraqi tribe demands justice for killings in Turkiye

Shafaq News – Nineveh/Sanliurfa The al-Rawi tribe in Iraq's Nineveh province condemned on Saturday the 'heinous and treacherous crime' that killed two of its members in Turkiye's Sanliurfa city, urging the Iraqi government to take immediate action. According to a statement, the victims, identified as Youssef Bashar Hamam al-Rawi (22) and Mohammed Bashar Hamam al-Rawi (12), were fatally shot while working at an industrial workshop in Sanliurfa. The tribe alleged the assailants were part of a group of criminals who opened fire on the two Iraqis due to a prior dispute, holding Turkish authorities 'fully responsible—legally and morally—for pursuing the perpetrators and ensuring they are not granted impunity.' It also urged urgent action by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Iraqi Embassy in Ankara to ensure a transparent investigation, hold the perpetrators accountable, and monitor the case closely to prevent obstruction.

Syrian Kurdish Network presses for journalist's release

Shafaq News – Damascus The Syrian Kurdish Journalists Network on Saturday demanded the immediate, unconditional release of journalist Hassan Zaza, who was detained without explanation. According to the network, General Security forces first arrived at Zaza's family home in the Rukn al-Din neighborhood of Damascus on Friday while he was away, then arrested him around 5 p.m. His relatives have received no information about his whereabouts or the reasons for his detention. Zaza, a member of the General Council of the Free Media Union and Syria's representative to the International Federation of Arab Journalists, suffers from chronic illnesses requiring regular medical care, a relative told Shafaq News. The Journalists Network condemned the arrest as a violation of press freedom and protections guaranteed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, urging authorities to clarify the grounds for Zaza's detention and to ensure journalists can work free from arbitrary interference. In May, security forces briefly detained Channel 8 journalist Akram Saleh and cameraman Joudi Haj Ali while covering clashes in Sahnaya near Damascus — an incident the Syrian Information Minister later described as a mistake.
