Market stress signals are flashing bright

Yahoo07-04-2025
LONDON (Reuters) - As a rout in global equity markets deepened on Monday amid tariff turmoil, the signs of stress across financial markets have started to flash brightly.
"It's quite clear that the market is in a panic," said Van Luu, global head of FX and fixed income strategy, Russell Investments.
The asset manager's gauge of investor risk aversion, which incorporates pricing trends and sentiment indicators, was approaching levels last seen in September-October 2022, when global central banks started an unprecedented run of interest rate hikes.
Here's a look at just some of the indicators on investors' watchlist.
VIX JUMPS
Wall Street's closely watched fear gauge, the VIX volatility index, jumped to 60 on Monday - its highest level since a global market selloff in August. It closed above 45 on Friday for the first time since the 2020 COVID-19 crisis, and jumped the most on a single day since then.
In Europe, a similar indicator -- the Euro STOXX Volatility Index -- was set for its biggest one-day surge in absolute terms since October 2008, the depths of the global financial crisis.
DOLLAR DEMAND
Demand from non-U.S. investors for dollars has surged, a typical sign that market participants need cash. The rate on three-month cross-currency basis swaps for the euro , a derivative that reflects this demand, traded around -7% from above 12.5% a week ago, its most negative since late 2023. A more negative number indicates higher demand for dollars.
JUNK IT
Junk bond spreads, which reflect the premium investors get for owning riskier corporate debt, compared to government bonds, have blown out to multi-month highs.
On Monday, the iTRAXX Crossover Index an index of five-year European junk bonds, leapt above 420 basis points in its largest one-day rise since March 2023 and to its highest since November that year and nearly 80 basis points higher than it was a week ago.
In the United States, the ICE BofA U.S. High Yield Index ended last week at its lowest since September, having posted its largest weekly drop since September 2022.
BANKS SLIDE
Global banks, key to the functioning of the global economy and a barometer for growth, continue to suffer steep share price falls.
European and Japanese bank stocks have shed roughly 20% of their value each in the last three trading sessions alone. Japanese banks closed 10% lower on Monday, while U.S. banks slid some 15% last week in their biggest weekly drop since 2020.
SWAP SPREADS
The pressure building in the U.S. bond market, the world's biggest with some $28 trillion in outstanding government debt, is starting to become apparent and one sign of strain is in swap spreads. They capture the premium on the fixed side of an interest-rate swap, which investors use to hedge against rates risk relative to bond yields.
U.S. two-year swap spreads - the difference between two-year swap rates and the two-year Treasury yield - briefly dropped to almost -46 basis points on Monday before pulling back to around -24 bps -- near its tightest levels since November.

Positive Points OMV AG (OMVJF) reported a 5% year-on-year increase in polyolefin sales volumes, driven by strong performance in consumer products and infrastructure. The company achieved several strategic milestones, including securing foreign direct investment approval in Austria and merger control clearance in the EU and China. OMV AG (OMVJF) announced a significant investment in a new production line in Germany to triple the output of innovative, fully recyclable polypropylene foam. The company is progressing well with its Neptune deep mega project in the Black Sea, which is on schedule and within budget. OMV AG (OMVJF) plans to invest in a new flagship green hydrogen plant in Austria, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 150,000 tons per year. Negative Points OMV AG (OMVJF) experienced a 10% decline in hydrocarbon production year-on-year, primarily due to the divestment of Malaysian assets. The clean CCS operating result was 16% below the prior year quarter, impacted by lower oil prices and exchange rate developments. The company's clean operating result in the energy segment declined by 28%, primarily due to significantly lower oil prices. OMV AG (OMVJF) faced challenges in the chemicals market with declining feedstock prices leading to negative inventory effects. The company reported a 14% decline in sales volumes, affected by lower production and decreased sales in Norway and Libya. Q & A Highlights Warning! GuruFocus has detected 9 Warning Signs with OMVJF. Q: How does OMV view the attractiveness of hybrid issuance compared to traditional debt, and what is the outlook for diesel margins? A: (CFO) Hybrids are part of OMV's diversified refinancing strategy, maintaining an average level of around 2 billion. The recent hybrid issuance was well-received, with high oversubscription and favorable pricing, ensuring no significant changes in financial results. Regarding diesel margins, (CEO) OMV has seen volatility in the refining segment but is well-prepared to capture opportunities from recent positive developments in diesel cracks, leading to an upgraded outlook from $6 to over $7 per barrel for the year. Q: Could the European Commission's investigation into the Castro acquisition impact the BGI merger, and is a capital markets event still planned for this year? A: (CEO) The BGI merger is progressing well, with several approvals already received. The European Commission's investigation into Castro is not seen as a hurdle for OMV. (CFO) A capital markets update is still planned for the second half of the year, with no specific date yet, but it will include updates on OMV's progress and future considerations. Q: How does OMV view the demand growth in Europe versus Asia for chemicals, and what is the outlook for upstream production costs? A: (CEO) European chemical sales volumes have increased, driven by strong performance in consumer products and infrastructure. Despite sluggish demand in Asia, OMV's setup allows for strong sales performance. Upstream production costs have risen due to lower production volumes, but absolute costs remain flat due to significant cost reduction programs. Q: What are the targets for the new exploration in the Black Sea, and what was the nature of the loan to Bayport? A: (CEO) The Black Sea exploration targets similar geology to the Neptune Deep project, with plans to drill two exploration wells. (CFO) The loan to Bayport was a shareholder loan from Borealis, repaid through external financing, resulting in a significant cash inflow for Borealis. Q: Will OMV maintain the 20-30% dividend payout ratio for 2025, given the cash flow performance? A: (CFO) The current dividend policy of a 20-30% payout ratio will apply for 2025, with no changes. The dividend will include a progressive dividend and a special dividend within the range, despite the cash flow challenges in the first half of the year. Crypto for Advisors: Ethereum Just Turned Ten

Yesterday, July 30th, was the 10-year anniversary of Ethereum's launch. In today's Crypto for Advisors newsletter, Alec Beckman from Psalion writes about Ether's growing role as a treasury reserve asset and highlights growing trends. Then, Eric Tomaszewski from Verde Capital Management answers questions about Ether as an investment in Ask an Expert. Thank you to our sponsor of this week's newsletter, Grayscale. For financial advisors: register for the upcoming Minneapolis event on September 18th. - Unknown block type "divider", specify a component for it in the ` option Ethereum: The Rising Treasury Asset Reshaping Corporate Finance Ether, the cryptocurrency of the Ethereum blockchain, is rapidly being adopted by public companies as a strategic treasury asset, an evolution that is helping to reshape corporate finance and shift ETH's market dynamics. Bitcoin has long dominated the digital treasury conversation. Its capped supply and decentralized nature make it a hedge against inflation and a store of value. Ether is catching up, thanks to its yield potential, economics, real-world utility, and maturing institutional infrastructure. Why Ethereum Appeals to Treasuries Ethereum's 2022 transition to proof-of-stake enabled holders to earn annual staking yields between 2% and 4%, creating a passive income layer that Bitcoin doesn't offer. The asset has also been deflationary at times, with more ETH burned than issued, supporting a store-of-value thesis. At the same time, Ethereum powers an ecosystem of decentralized applications, tokenized assets, and smart contracts. For corporations, it can function not only as a reserve asset but also as capital for deploying services and infrastructure. The ETH Treasury Wave Several public companies are now building treasury strategies around ETH, following early movers like MicroStrategy in Bitcoin: Bit Digital holds over 120,300 ETH and stakes its entire allocation. CEO Sam Tabar calls it a 'flywheel model,' where staking yield funds operations. They plan to add more to the tune of > $1b. BTCS recently increased its holdings to over 70,000 ETH and was among the first public firms to stake ETH as a treasury strategy. Bitmine Immersion is aiming to acquire 5% of total ETH supply. Backed by significant funding and led by Tom Lee, it now holds over 625,000 ETH. Sharplink Gaming holds more than $1.67 billion in ETH, adding nearly 80,000 coins in a single week and pursuing staking as a core strategy. Joe Lubin is a board member and running their ETH acquisition strategy. Gamesquare has allocated an initial $30 million in ETH with approval to scale to $250 million. It also plans to integrate DeFi and NFT-based yield as differentiators. GameSquare sees the Ethereum Network as Manhattan, with a Financial District (DeFi), an art district (NFTs), and more. Investing in it today is critical for future value and use. The Ether Machine, a SPAC-backed vehicle spun out from Publicly Traded Dynamix, is targeting $1.5 billion in ETH as it prepares to go public. The companies listed above all plan to add significantly more. Other companies have just announced their holdings such as ETHzilla. These companies aren't just buying… they're signaling long-term conviction and, in many cases, building products and revenue streams directly on Ethereum. One example is GameSquare, whose strategy closely aligns with their audience in the gaming, media, and entertainment industries and sees the connection with on-chain products built on Ethereum. It is important to them to foster financial alignment with their audience. BTCS is implementing a similar strategy to align with its audience, as block building and staking create a vertical stack on the Ethereum Network, resulting in efficiencies in transactions and staking. The Demand–Supply Imbalance ETH's price has climbed steadily in recent months, and public company purchases are one of the primary catalysts for this increase. In a recent 30-day span, over 32 times more ETH was purchased than issued. That includes buying from treasury allocators, staking vehicles, and newly approved ETFs. A continuation of this trend will create a supply shock. Unlike Bitcoin, where miners often must sell their bitcoin to cover operational costs, Ethereum's shift to proof-of-stake reduces sell-side pressure and aligns holders with securing the network. Conclusion Ethereum is no longer just a platform for developers; it's now a financial asset that public companies are adopting at scale. With built-in yield, deflationary dynamics, and rising institutional demand, ETH is emerging as a cornerstone of corporate treasury strategy. As more firms move from 'interested' to 'allocated,' this new wave of ETH buyers may help define the next phase of the crypto cycle. Special thank you to Sam Tabar, CEO of Bit-Digital, Charles Allen, CEO of BTCS, Justin Kenna, CEO of GameSquare and Rhydon Lee, managing partner of Goff Capital (affiliated with GameSquare) on sharing their insights with me on ETH Treasury Companies, differentiation, and the Ethereum network in general. - Alec Beckman, vice president of growth, Psalion Unknown block type "divider", specify a component for it in the ` option Ask an Expert Q: Why is ETH being discussed as a strategic reserve asset? A: Ethereum has quietly become financial infrastructure, not just a speculative asset. Unlike bitcoin (which is mostly a 'store of value' ), ETH powers a real economy that ties to smart contracts, tokenized assets, stablecoin transactions, and decentralized financial services. As more economic activity settles on Ethereum, ETH is being considered a reserve asset by institutions, fintech firms, DAOs, and even sovereign actors. The reason is that ETH is the fuel that makes the system work. It's similar to holding oil in an energy economy or treasuries in a dollar system. Q: Should corporate treasuries treat ETH like a cash equivalent, long-duration tech-oriented equity, or a form of intangible infrastructure? A: In practice, I see this as a new sleeve in the portfolio that I'd call a 'digital infrastructure reserve." It carries tech beta and regulatory risk, but also offers operational utility (smart-contract escrow, settlement, tokenization rails). That's neither cash nor equity. Q: How do you translate 'ETH as a strategic reserve' into practical implications? A: For institutions and treasuries: ETH serves as the cash and collateral for running on-chain businesses. It generates yield (staking) like T-bills. It's held on balance sheets, declared in treasury policies, and audited. For individuals & families: ETH is treated as a long-term strategic asset. Allocated thoughtfully (at least 1 — 5%) and separated from short-term needs. Used to earn staking income, hedge against fiat devaluation, and gain exposure to Ethereum's growing role in finance and tokenized infrastructure. Q: What would prove that ETH deserves to be treated like a serious reserve asset over the next 10 years? A: If more of the world's financial activity like tokenized real estate, stablecoins, and large international payments are settling directly on Ethereum, it shows growing trust in the network. As Ethereum becomes core infrastructure for global value transfer, ETH moves from speculation to a legitimate strategic reserve. is a great source for gauging progression. Beyond that, it's helpful to watch the innovation and creativity of names like Robinhood and The Ether Machine, to name a few. - Unknown block type "divider", specify a component for it in the ` option Keep Reading The White House released its first Digital Asset Policy Report on Wednesday, July 30th. Mistral in talks with VC firms, MGX to raise funds at $10 billion valuation, FT reports

(Reuters) -French artificial intelligence startup Mistral is in talks with investors, venture capital firms and Abu Dhabi's MGX to raise $1 billion at a valuation of $10 billion, the Financial Times reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter. The company launched in June Europe's first AI reasoning model, which uses logical thinking to create a response, as it tries to keep pace with American and Chinese rivals at the forefront of AI development. The funding would accelerate the commercial rollout of Mistral's Le Chat chatbot and support continued development of its large language models, the report said. MGX and Mistral did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment. The startup raised 600 million euros in a Series B funding round that valued the company at 5.8 billion euros last year. Industry observers consider Mistral as Europe's best-positioned AI company to rival Silicon Valley leaders, though the French firm has yet to achieve comparable market traction or revenue scale. Mistral counts Nvidia, Andreessen Horowitz and Lightspeed Venture Partners among its investors. Sign in to access your portfolio
