Lando Norris Wins Austrian Grand Prix, Chips Away at Teammate's Championship Lead
Lando Norris was able to translate his five-second gap above the field in qualifying to a win of 1.8 seconds over his teammate, Oscar Piastri, with the rest of the field nearly 20 seconds behind. Piastri and Norris battled across the opening 20 laps before Norris pulled away ahead of the first round of pit stops, with Norris pitting four laps ahead of Piastri and holding a six-second advantage at Piastri's pit exit and track return. "We had a great battle, it was a lot of fun, for me a lot of stress, but a lot of fun," Norris told F1TV. Well done to Oscar, hopefully it was a nice one for everyone to watch." The McLarens were followed by the Ferraris, with Charles Leclerc in third and Lewis Hamilton following 9 seconds back in fourth. The race got off to a rocky start with Carlos Sainz's Williams failing to start on the formation lap, which led to a larger brake failure and fire. On the second shot on the start, in the infamous Turn 3, Antonelli got into Max Verstappen, taking them both out of the race. Alex Albon would become the second Williams and fourth and final car to retire from the grand prix. 'F1 'director Joseph Kosinski reveals the movie's alternate endings, talks sequel plans
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Everyone loves an underdog. In a sense, the conclusion of F1: The Movie, now in theaters, offers an underdog victory as owner Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem) and his entire APXGP (casually called Apex) team come out on top, winning both the World Drivers' Championship and full support from the APX board. It also finally gives Brad Pitt's Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt), the once-promising driver looking for a shot at redemption, the victory he's long chased. In the film's final sequence, it seems as if Sonny is going to clear the way for his rookie teammate, Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), to take the title and win the race. But at the last minute, Joshua collides with Lewis Hamilton (also an F1 producer), leaving the door open for Sonny to take the lead — and the win. At last, Sonny can call himself a world champion. But director and co-writer Joseph Kosinski reveals that they did at least consider sticking with what the film appears to be setting up and giving Joshua Pearce the title. "We discussed the ending a lot, and there's certainly a version where that happens," Kosinski tells Entertainment Weekly. "But ultimately, where we landed was the culmination of Sonny's story." It helps that Joshua is still "at the beginning of his career," the director continues. "Like he says to Sonny, 'I'm going to win a million, mate.' So it feels like Sonny has achieved what he needs to achieve, but Joshua is just at the start of an incredible career." Indeed, Sonny feels so secure in his victory and finally proving himself in the world of Formula One that he seems to put APX in his rearview mirror. Instead of sticking around, he travels to Baja, Mexico, to inquire about the dune races and a "driver wanted" ad he sees in the film's opening sequence (even though we've now learned that any one crash could kill him instantly because of injuries from a racing accident that nearly took him out 30 years ago). "I'm sure for him that's a way to go," Kosinski says of Sonny perhaps having a death wish behind the wheel. "But I don't think that's in the plan anytime soon. For him, it's just, what's the next challenge? What's the next mountain to climb? And Baja is something that's completely different than Formula One and would be a really fun adventure to see him on."Speaking of which, is there a world in which we'd see Sonny racing in Baja — or anywhere, for that matter? Kosinski admits he does have ideas in mind for a potential sequel. "But that's up to the audience to decide if they want to see it," he notes. "I loved working with this group of people. I loved creating our own Formula One team. I'd love to see what's up next for APXGP and Sonny Hayes." F1 is in theaters now. Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly

2028 BMW M3 EV Caught Looking as Generic as Possible in New Spy Shots
The latest car news, reviews, and features. BMW intends to keep its gasoline-powered M3 sport sedan around for at least one more generation, but that doesn't mean the company is putting off development of an all-electric version in the meantime. Earlier this month, an M3 EV (iM3?) was spotted in public wearing production sheet metal, and while it's still pretty heavily disguised, the basic shape and those wide hips are clearly visible. The body may suggest a traditional 3 Series, but the Neue Klassse wheels betray its underlying electrical architecture. BMW is no stranger to building sporty electric four-doors, mind you, but expectations will be significantly higher for the M3 than they have been for the i4 M50. The latter has been successful and is indeed a fun car to drive, but it is not (nor was it intended to be) a world-class performance sedan. To that end, BMW is expected to bring to market a quad-motor powertrain to underpin its all-electric M lineup. BMW showed off a prototype based on the i4 years ago, likely before it had firmly committed to a Neue Klasse M3. The new platform will be designed from the ground up to take advantage of its next-generation electric architecture. BMWBlog says we can expect a configuration putting out 700 horsepower. That's a healthy increase over the gasoline-powered M3's current 500-ish horsepower output (depending on which variant you choose, of course), but based on what our spies are telling us about this prototype, the electric M3 may well weigh more than 6,000 pounds. At least, that's what the numbers on that placard suggest. Let's hope those are gross weights, because otherwise, well, they're some pretty gross weights. The Tesla Model S Plaid, which is nearly eight inches longer and four inches wider than the current M3, checks in at about 4,800 pounds. Its three-motor setup produces more than 1,000 horsepower. We're also getting out first glimpse at the electric M3's interior, albeit still heavily disguised. We can see the outline of some aggressively sculpted seats, as well as the chunky sort of steering wheel we expect to see on an M car. The rest is pretty well covered up.
