Customs officers have found $1.6 million worth of cocaine "intricately" hidden in a suitcase at Auckland Airport.
Four kilos of the drug were concealed in the panels of the bag of a passenger who had arrived on a flight from Chile yesterday, Customs said.
The bag came to the attention of the officers when it was flagged for an inspection during baggage processing.

Auckland Airport chief customs officer Ben Wells said the officers had to do a very detailed search.
"This one was quite an intricate concealment - its detection relied on our officers' training and tenacity. They kept looking until they found it," he said.
"Organised crime uses a number of ways to attempt to smuggle narcotics into New Zealand. Our experienced officers use a range of techniques to detect concealments."
If it was sold, the drug would have been worth $1,552,000 and finding it has prevented a lot of social harm and cost to New Zealand, a Customs spokesperson said.
A 25 year old woman has been charged with the importation and possession of a Class A controlled drug.

Hamilton brawl: 20-year-old victim named by police

Tyreece Te Pairi, of Hamilton, was injured in the incident in the central city just after midnight on Sunday, and later died in hospital. Three other victims suffered injuries ranging from moderate to serious. RNZ understands the victims were stabbed. Detective Inspector Daryl Smith said police were providing support to Tye Pairi's family, and the investigation team was "continuing to assess every line of enquiry available to us". "It's possible you have captured something that will assist the investigation." Sources have told RNZ that the stabbing may have been linked to a club event in the central city. Police said there will continue to be a visible police presence in Hamilton as the investigation continues, as well as reassurance patrols in the community. Photo: Supplied / NZ Police A man has been charged with murder over the cold-case killing of a Hawke's Bay father nearly seven years ago. A 29-year-old Hastings man was arrested for the murder of 45-year-old Eddie Peters, who was beaten and left for dead in Flaxmere in 2018. "In the early hours of Friday 16 November 2018, Eddie was viciously beaten and left for dead on the driveway of a home on Diaz Drive in Flaxmere," said Detective Inspector Dave de Lange. "He was hospitalised, but despite the best efforts and care of medical staff, he sadly died at Wellington Hospital on 24 November." Police said they were able to piece together the tragic events of that night thanks to the assistance from members of the Hastings community. "What happened to Eddie was terrible, and the investigation team has remained focused on establishing exactly what happened, for Eddie's whanau and friends," de Lange said. "The arrest brings some satisfaction, but I believe there are still more people out in the community who know what happened and can further assist the investigation." The 29-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman were also charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, in relation to the murder investigation. He will appear in the Hastings District Court this afternoon and police are urging anyone with anymore information to contact them. Jury retires in Julia DeLuney murder trial

Photo: RNZ / Mark Papalii The jury has retired to consider its verdict in the trial of Julia DeLuney, accused of violently murdering her 79-year-old mother. Helen Gregory was killed on 24 January, 2024, at her home in the Wellington suburb of Khandallah. DeLuney has been on trial at the High Court in Wellington since 23 June, with the Crown arguing she attacked her mother with a heavy object, possibly motivated by financial incentives or following a confrontation over stolen cash, and staging the scene to look like a fall from the attic. But the defence said it was a case of mistaken identity, calling the police investigation "one-eyed" and arguing they didn't properly investigate alternative suspects - for example, a mysterious door-knocker late that same night further down the street, who was not there when the homeowner opened the door. Justice Peter Churchman urged the jury members to carefully consider the evidence they had heard over the course of the trial, in line with each side's closing argument. He reminded the jurors that although DeLuney had been shown to lie, according to the evidence of a number of witnesses including financial experts and family members, it did not mean she necessarily committed the crime of murder. It is not in dispute that Helen Gregory was killed on the night of 24 January, 2024. What the jury must decide is whether it was DeLuney who killed her. The possible outcome is murder or nothing - the Crown is not pursuing a charge of manslaughter.
