Four kilos of cocaine found hidden in suitcase
The drugs found in the suitcase would have been worth $1.6m if sold. Photo: Supplied / Customs Customs officers have found $1.6 million worth of cocaine "intricately" hidden in a suitcase at Auckland Airport. Four kilos of the drug were concealed in the panels of the bag of a passenger who had arrived on a flight from Chile yesterday, Customs said. The bag came to the attention of the officers when it was flagged for an inspection during baggage processing. Four kilograms of cocaine were found hidden in a suitcase at Auckland Airport. Photo: Supplied / Customs Auckland Airport chief customs officer Ben Wells said the officers had to do a very detailed search. "This one was quite an intricate concealment - its detection relied on our officers' training and tenacity. They kept looking until they found it," he said. "Organised crime uses a number of ways to attempt to smuggle narcotics into New Zealand. Our experienced officers use a range of techniques to detect concealments." If it was sold, the drug would have been worth $1,552,000 and finding it has prevented a lot of social harm and cost to New Zealand, a Customs spokesperson said. A 25 year old woman has been charged with the importation and possession of a Class A controlled drug. More than 60kg of methamphetamine, worth $22m, seized at Auckland Airport
Auckland International Airport. Photo: DEAN TREML Customs officers at Auckland International Airport seized more than 60 kilograms of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of more than $22 million, from two bags overnight. The unaccompanied duffle bags, which arrived on a flight from Malaysia, were identified by Customs officers undertaking routine screening of incoming passengers and baggage, Customs Auckland Airport manager Paul Williams said. The officers discovered vacuum-sealed packages inside the bags, which tested positive for methamphetamine. One bag contained 30kg of the Class A drug and the other, 30.3kg. Williams said the quantity of methamphetamine had an estimated street value of $22.6 million, and could have caused around $63.26 million in potential harm and cost to New Zealand. He credited the intercept to the "eagle-eyed and highly skilled Customs officers who once again prevented harmful drugs from entering the community". "Its been a demanding year for Customs officers at Auckland International Airport, with organised criminal groups attempting to move increasingly large volumes of illicit drugs through the border," Williams said. "While we work hard to support law-abiding travellers during the school holiday travel period, our officers remain alert to tactics such as drug couriers and unaccompanied luggage. "This seizure is a clear result of strong intelligence, trusted partnerships, and frontline vigilance, and it sends a strong message to those seeking to exploit our border." Williams said everyone had a role to play in protecting New Zealand's border and communities from illegal drugs. Coast Guard offloads $211 million in cocaine at Port Everglades
The U.S. Coast Guard offloaded more than 28,500 pounds of cocaine, valued at an estimated $211.3 million, on Thursday at Port Everglades, authorities said. Coast Guard officials announced the drug seizure followed four successful interdictions in the Eastern Pacific. Interdiction operations On May 3, a maritime patrol aircraft identified two suspicious vessels 170 miles west of Mexico, leading to the interdiction of 4,630 pounds of cocaine, with 4,608 pounds transferred to Ecuadorian authorities for prosecution, according to the USCG. On May 5, 9,993 pounds of cocaine were recovered from a bale field 475 miles southwest of Colima, Mexico. The following day, 14,559 pounds were retrieved from three bale fields 575 miles southwest of Acapulco, Mexico, after an embarked helicopter crew observed vessels discarding bales. On May 10, the crews recovered 3,984 pounds from another bale field 660 miles south of Acapulco. "These operations align with the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces' Strike Force initiatives, targeting high-level criminal organizations," the Coast Guard said.
