Wayne Lineker reveals victim of Conor McGregor nightclub attack who ‘took punches like a champ' as he slams UFC brute

The Sun19-06-2025

THE man punched by Conor McGregor in a 6am nightclub brawl is Wayne Lineker's close pal who has 'the most special heart'.
Joe Gomez was whacked twice by the ex-UFC fighter, 36, in the legendary Pacha nightclub 'for absolutely no reason' on Tuesday morning.

His identity was revealed in a now-deleted Instagram post by club mogul Wayne, 63, who said he was 'disappointed' with McGregor for attacking his employee.
MMA legend Conor had been partying in Lineker's Ocean Beach club earlier in the night before moving to the VIP section of Pacha.
Wayne's post, to his one million followers, said: 'Thought about this post a lot.
'This is my very close friend who has worked at Ocean for eight years, he has the most special heart and in all of the years that I've known him he has never raised his voice once.
'He took two punches from Conor McGregor in Pacha for absolutely no reason.
'Let me introduce you to Joe Gooomez (sic). He took the punches like a champion.
'I've since deleted my post of Conor at Ocean on Sunday. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement.
'We at Ocean Beach Ibiza will always put our family first #wearefamily.'
One of Joe's pals, who was in the club during the bust-up, told The Sun: "He has worked with Wayne for a long time and Wayne is very loyal to his staff.
"Conor had a great deal at Ocean - he got a table and drinks for free. Now that benefit may well be taken away.
"If you were around Conor in the club and you took your phone out, you'd be told to put it away.
Love Island star sparks feud with Wayne Linekar calling him him an 'insecure grandad'
"I don't know how Joe got that close to begin with.
"Joe's not said anything about pressing charges or making a formal complaint to the police.
"He had some time off booked after the incident anyway, but Wayne has been very good at handling it.
"Joe's fine and there was no injury from the punches. It was obviously a shock, and he feels he was in the wrong place at the wrong time."
Earlier in the evening, the combat sports legend was pictured with glamour model Katie Price at Lineker's club.
Taking to Instagram, he was seen puffing on a cigar while wearing red shorts, a sun hat and sunglasses while playing up to the crowd.
Price, 47, reshared the story to her own Instagram page with the caption: "You legend," after McGregor tagged her in his own story and said: "Forever".
Spurs ace Kevin Danso also shared a snap of himself with the MMA fighter.
The Sun's exclusive footage first showed how McGregor was talking to a man on the exclusive club's dancefloor before putting his arm around his shoulders from a platform above.
After the pair chat for less than ten seconds, McGregor strikes the man, who appears to be Mr Gomez, next to his pal with his left hand.
The first punch failed to cleanly connect, but less than a second later, the "Notorious" lands a clean left hook as the startled party-goer falls to the floor.
McGregor, wearing a black and white shirt and tight white trousers, is then shielded from other club-goers by his own friends, who stormed the booth he was standing in.
Revellers in the nightclub revealed that after the bizarre scrap, the man punched by McGregor was thrown out, while the Irish fighter kept drinking.
One told The Sun: 'Clearly something's been said to annoy him and he's reacted very badly.
'The guy seemed to fall to the floor, and his mates came to pick him up and get him away.
'There [didn't appear to be any] consequences for Conor, but the guy he punched was taken away and I didn't see him again.'

The short but violent scrap unfolded at 5:53am after McGregor, who hasn't fought since 2021, had spent the night partying with his huge entourage.
Another club-goer said: "He had his arm around someone who looked like his mate.
'Someone came up to them and when Conor hit him, about five people fell to the floor as the guy stumbled back.
"It was a bit like bowling pins, but the guy was really shaken by the hits.
"About a minute later, the bouncers came and got him on the back and took him out of the club, because he had annoyed Conor.
"It was right before close anyway. There was no messing around, they just removed him.
"Conor left through the garden a bit later, he didn't look very happy that they got into a fight."
Wayne Lineker and McGregor's representative were asked to comment.

The Spanish resort where Brits 'can't stop cheating' revealed as tourist hotspot is nicknamed 'marriage destroyer'

According to new research, couples should be wary of one Spanish resort which has been dubbed the 'marriage killer' as people are more likely to cheat when they holiday there. A survey carried out by affairs website IllicitEncounters revealed this area is Magaluf. While the town has previously been known for its affordable pints and sun-soaked beaches, the recent research has labelled it the top destination for Brits looking to cheat. For the survey, more than 2,000 users of the site were polled, and asked where there were most likely to travel to if they wanted to be unfaithful. The answer that came top of the list was Magaluf. As a result, IllicitEncounters described the destination as the 'marriage destroyer' of Europe. Jessica Leoni, spokesperson for IllicitEncounters, said: 'Magaluf has been famed for its booze-fuelled breaks for decades, and its popularity with stag and hen-dos is another reason it is still considered a mecca for cheating. Leoni added why she believes the area makes people more likely to be unfaithful. She described the trinity of a sense of freedom, heat, and alcohol all combining to create a holiday romance (or something rather more tawdry). And it's not the case that all cheaters leave their infidelity in Magaluf. According to the majority of those polled (87 per cent) they kept in touch with their affair partner once returning home. When it comes to the cheating capital of the UK, some may be surprised to learn where it is. Last November, Cheltenham was crowned the UK's 'new adultery capital'. According to figures from the annual Infidelity Index data provided by the UK's 'leading affairs site', 6.98 per cent of the town's population reportedly had affairs last year. Not far behind Cheltenham, known for its posh surroundings and four-day horse racing festival, was Farnham, Surrey, with 5.99 per cent of people allegedly cheating on their partners. In third place was Motherwell, Lanarkshire (5.63 per cent), followed by Warwick (5.61 per cent) and Braintree in Essex (5.55 per cent). Elsewhere, 5.36 per cent of the population in Rhyl, Denbighshire were reportedly caught up in affairs, as were 5.35 per cent of people in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire. Towards the bottom of the list were Newbury, Berkshire (5.23 per cent), Frome, Somerset (5.18 per cent) and Wilmslow in Cheshire, (5.12 per cent). Commenting on the Infidelity Index results at the time, sex and relationships expert at Jessica Leoni said: 'While picturesque towns like Cheltenham may seem serene on the surface, data suggests that love lives here are anything but tranquil.' When it comes to the opposite end of the scale, Swindon has been dubbed the UK's 'most faithful town', with only 0.35 per cent reportedly cheating. Close behind are Bracknell, Berkshire (0.36 per cent), Dewsbury, West Yorkshire (0.39 per cent), Castlereagh in County Down (0.44 per cent) and Rotherham, South Yorkshire (0.58 per cent).

BBC: Kneecap's Glastonbury set will not be live streamed but could go on-demand

Kneecap's performance at Glastonbury Festival will not be live-streamed but is likely to be made available on-demand, the BBC has said. A number of British politicians have called for the Irish rap trio to be removed from the line-up and UK prime minister Sir Keir Starmer said their performance would not be 'appropriate' after one of the members was charged with a terror offence. Advertisement A BBC spokesperson said: 'As the broadcast partner, the BBC is bringing audiences extensive music coverage from Glastonbury, with artists booked by the festival organisers. 'While the BBC doesn't ban artists, our plans ensure that our programming meets our editorial guidelines. 'We don't always live-stream every act from the main stages and look to make an on-demand version of Kneecap's performance available on our digital platforms, alongside more than 90 other sets.' It is understood the BBC needs to consider the performance before making a final decision. Advertisement The band said on Instagram: 'The propaganda wing of the regime has just contacted us…. 'They WILL put our set from Glastonbury today on the iPlayer later this evening for your viewing pleasure.' Liam Og O hAnnaidh, 27, was charged with allegedly displaying a flag in support of proscribed terrorist organisation Hezbollah, while saying 'up Hamas, up Hezbollah' at a gig in November last year. On June 18th, the rapper, who performs under the stage name Mo Chara, was cheered by hundreds of supporters as he arrived with bandmates Naoise O Caireallain and JJ O Dochartaigh at Westminster Magistrates' Court in Free Mo Chara T-shirts. Advertisement The 1975 headlined on Friday at Glastonbury Festival (Yui Mok/PA) He was released on unconditional bail until the next hearing at the same court on August 20th. Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch said she thinks the BBC 'should not be showing' the group's set. In an X post from last Saturday, she said: 'The BBC should not be showing Kneecap propaganda. 'One Kneecap band member is currently on bail, charged under the Terrorism Act. Advertisement 'As a publicly funded platform, the BBC should not be rewarding extremism.' The Arcadia Dragonfly takes flight to mark the launch of Build The Peace, a new initiative transforming military machines into unifying art across post-conflict zones, during the Glastonbury Festival (Ben Birchall/PA) Ahead of the group's set, an Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson told the PA news agency: 'Ticket-holders can once again expect to see uniformed officers on site at Glastonbury Festival 24/7 throughout the festival as part of our extensive policing operation ensuring it is safe for everyone attending, as well as those who live nearby.' Neil Young, best known for songs such as Rockin' In The Free World, Like A Hurricane and Cinnamon Girl, will headline the festival's Pyramid Stage on Saturday night with his band the Chrome Hearts. The corporation will broadcast Young's set after previously saying it would not be shown 'at the artist's request'. Advertisement Neil Young's set will be televised on the BBC (Isabel Infantes/PA) On Saturday a BBC spokesperson said: 'We are delighted to confirm that Neil Young's headline set from Glastonbury on Saturday will be broadcast live to audiences across the UK on the BBC.' The set will be shown on the BBC iPlayer Pyramid Stage stream from 10pm, as well as broadcast on BBC Two and BBC Radio 2. Another act expected to draw a big crowd is Brat star Charli XCX, who will headline the Other Stage around the same time Young and Grammy Award-winning rapper Doechii will also perform. A person in the crowd waves a sign as the Kaiser Chiefs perform on the Pyramid Stage (Yui Mok/PA) The 1975 headlined the festival's Pyramid Stage on Friday night, with the performance seeing singer Matty Healy joke he was his generation's 'best songwriter'. Friday also saw a performance from Scottish music star Lewis Capaldi who told the Glastonbury crowds 'I'm back baby' as he played a surprise set, two years after a performance at the festival during which he struggled to manage his Tourette syndrome symptoms. Harry Styles was among the stars attending the festival (PA) Celebrities who have been spotted at the festival include singer Harry Styles, Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne and Stranger Things star Joseph Quinn. Friday saw hot dry weather which hardened the Worthy Farm surface after rain in the early hours of the morning, with festival goers expected to see temperatures in the mid-20s on Saturday. The Met Office's Grahame Madge said: 'We anticipate highs of 26C on Saturday, with high levels of humidity. By Monday temperatures can be anticipated to be over 30C. 'There is always the chance of a light shower, but there is nothing in the forecast that suggests anything heavier for Saturday for Somerset.' The BBC is providing livestreams of the five main stages: Pyramid, Other, West Holts, Woodsies and The Park.

Glastonbury 2025 Saturday live: Kneecap, John Fogerty and Neil Young set to perform

28 June 2025 2:21pm 2:19PM Should we boycott Rod Stewart? Eleanor Halls writes: That's the question I hear a punter in his deckchair casually asking the stage at Leftfield tent following a discussion of Israel, as I pass by on my way to West Holts to catch indie rocker Nulifer Yanya. Stewart recently denounced Netanyahu for 'annihilating' Palestinians. The compère isn't having it: 'I'm not answering that.' Lauren Shirreff says: Labour MP Zarah Sultana and journalist Carol Cadwalladr sat on a panel this morning about the rise of the far right, moderated by John Harris. The only relevant news stories from the weekend are that Keir Starmer has said that he 'deeply regrets' referring to Britain as an island of strangers, and that Rod Stewart has said that we should all 'give Nigel Farage a chance'. Will it dampen the rock legend's Pyramid stage show tomorrow afternoon? 2:09PM Will the BBC be showing Neil Young on TV? Hey hey, my my, it turns out that yes they will. It's been a rollercoaster since Young was announced as the Saturday headliner. First, he pulled out altogether over the BBC's involvement. A day later, he changed his mind. Then, when the BBC confirmed their schedules last week, there was a very conspicuous hole where old man Young should be, and, when prodded, the BBC released a vague statement that suggested he wouldn't be shown, but they were continuing negotiations. But good news has come for any baby boomers not out on a weekend and hoping to watch tonight with a whisky in hand, the BBC announced today that he will be broadcast after all. Other Stage headliner Charlie XCX has already been given the BBC One slot. So Young's set will air on BBC Two from 10pm. He has a heart of gold after all. 2:05PM Will the BBC be showing Kneecap on TV? Irish rap group Kneecap are set to perform on the West Holts Stage at 4pm. The live stream from that stage will be available on the iPlayer – although it seems unlikely that Kneecap's set will be shown live. The BBC's television broadcast doesn't begin until 5pm, on BBC Two, so they were never going to be broadcast live on old-fashioned linear television. There may well be highlights shown on TV later in the evening, but it sounds like the BBC will make that decision once they've considered the band's performance. A BBC spokesperson said: 'Whilst the BBC doesn't ban artists, our plans ensure that our programming meets our editorial guidelines. 'We don't always live-stream every act from the main stages and look to make an on-demand version of Kneecap's performance available on our digital platforms, alongside more than 90 other sets.' We shall see what happens. 2:01PM Which celebrities let their hair down backstage last night? There will be quite a few sore heads among the A-list set this morning, since I have heard reports that a topless Andrew Scott, Rita Ora, Ncuti Gatwa, Tilda Swinton wearing a stick-on moustache and someone who looked suspiciously like Harry Styles were key players on the dance floor at riotous gay club NYC Downlow last night. In fact, Swinton was originally denied entry by an overzealous bouncer until someone swooped in to hiss 'that's Tilda Swinton' in his ear. If it was indeed Mr Styles, then perhaps we might expect him to come out with Olivia Rodrigo tomorrow night. Or maybe he's doing some field research ahead of his rumoured headline slot in 2027 – after 2026's fallow year. Eleanor Halls 1:57PM Welcome to Glastonbury Saturday live blog Once again, we have our six journalists (Neil McCormick, Eleanor Halls, Poppie Platt, James Hall, LA Robinson and Lauren Shirreff) sending back reports, reviews, photos, videos and anything else they can rustle up. They seem to have survived the heat, mayhem and very high step-counts of Friday. Manning the blog from the office is Catherine Gee, and later Marianka Swain. The weather forecast today is sun and cloud with a high of 25C, so there won't be any pictures of rain-soaked festival-goers, I'm afraid. Probably a fair bit of sunburn, though. Eleanor Halls writes: Yesterday's headliner The 1975 went down well in the field, despite initial apprehensions, with punters streaming out looking exhilarated – you can read our four-star review here. But today is the biggie: Kneecap will be riling things up on the West Holts Stage from 4pm, and Neil Young – who the BBC will be broadcasting after all – is competing against Charli XCX (Other Stage) and Doechii (West Holts) for eyeballs this evening, no doubt creating the festival's clearest demographic split of the weekend. Considering the madness of Lorde's secret set yesterday morning, there are concerns for a possible crush ahead of Charli's show on the Other stage. If you're watching from your sofa, make sure you have a look at our music critic Neil McCormick's top gigs to watch and catch up on our Friday live blog.
