At Chromepet, rly gates shut 60 times

Time of India23-06-2025
Chennai: More than 120 trains pass through the railway line at Chromepet every day, forcing the closure of Level Crossings 26 and 27 more than 60 times. In the middle of a busy Chennai suburb, vehicles back up for hundreds of metres, and waiting times stretch up to 20 minutes each time.
Some riders attempt to cross by ducking under the gates, while pedestrians and cyclists try to weave between them. A moment's misjudgement has already proved fatal for a few.
The two subways meant to replace these crossings have remained incomplete for years. The Radha Nagar subway near Level Crossing 27, sanctioned in 2009, is 86% complete, claim engineers from state highways department, who say that the structure is ready on one side, but black-topping and a top slab near GST Road are still pending.
The cost has more than doubled to 28.99 crore.
A key reason for the delay is the lack of written clearance from Southern Railway for a 3-metre-wide, 30-metre-long land parcel required to widen the subway into a two-way stretch. Residents and MLA E Karunanithi backed the plan, but there has been no formal nod yet.
The second subway, planned in 2014 near Level Crossing 26 at a cost of 60 crore, made little progress due to land acquisition delays.

Meanwhile, residents have to travel an extra two kilometres through Station Link Road or Radial Road just to reach GST Road.
"We have to sit and wait for 15 minutes every time," said Natesan, an auto driver from Tambaram Sanatorium. "There's dust from the construction too."
V Govindarajan, a resident-activist from Chromepet, said, "We've filed Right to Information petitions. First, they blamed cables, then land acquisition. Still no action." Residents plan to protest before the highway department's zonal office on Wednesday, demanding the subway near Crossing 26 be prioritized.

Six water buffaloes die from ‘lightning strike' in Kaziranga

1 2 Guwahati: Carcasses of six wild water buffaloes were found at Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, with preliminary investigation revealing lightning strike as the likely cause of death. The buffaloes — four females and two males — were discovered on Wednesday evening at Mona Beel, under the Kaziranga Range at Kohora in Golaghat district, during routine patrolling near the Mona Tongi area by forest staff. Sonali Ghosh, the park director, said the buffaloes were found lying close to one another, suggesting a sudden and collective fatal event. Following the discovery, the forest department formed a committee of wildlife experts and veterinarians to investigate the cause of death and conduct autopsies. "Based on the positioning of the carcasses, the health of the animals, and preliminary post-mortem findings, the cause of death is likely to be lightning-induced," Ghosh added. She said samples and data were collected for detailed analysis to confirm the exact reason behind the deaths. The forest department is closely monitoring the situation and has instructed field staff to remain vigilant, particularly during the ongoing monsoon season, when natural threats like lightning strikes tend to increase. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Hi Tabbola Undo The wild water buffalo is listed as an "endangered" species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, making each loss a matter of significant concern. Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, a Unesco World Heritage site, is one of the last remaining habitats for these majestic creatures, underscoring the importance of ongoing protection and monitoring efforts to safeguard their population against natural and human-induced threats.

Hale Nerenki school all set for centenary celebrations in Nov

Mangaluru: The govt Higher Primary School in Hale Nerenki, Kadaba taluka, is all set for its centenary celebrations in Nov this year. To mark the occasion, the school's centenary committee, alumni association, SDMC, and the teaching staff have all joined hands. The school completed 100 years in 2023, but the centenary celebrations, having a budget of around Rs 60 lakh, were delayed due to financial constraints. The decks are now clear for the bash to be held in the last week of Nov. In 1923, the institution had a humble beginning from a small building owned by the Nerenki Guthu family to address the educational needs of the people of Hale Nerenki. In 1925, it was handed over to the taluka board. Later, in 1962, it was upgraded to a higher primary school, with a further upgrade coming in 2007. However, student enrolment at the school has seen a steady decline. From 410 at one point, student numbers have now come down to 109. Shantappa Y Gowda, the headmaster, though, sounded an optimistic note, claiming that the Hale Nerenki school is at par with private schools in the vicinity in terms of the quality of education. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gentle, Needle-Free Way to Monitor Blood Sugar—Now Being Tried by Seniors Zakdavi Undo The school, built on 1.91 acres, includes a playground, computer room, library, provides clean drinking water, has well-furnished classrooms, and an auditorium.
