Arab content creators debut at Cannes Lions

Gulf Today23-06-2025
In a milestone for global content creators representation, the 71st Cannes Lions festival in France has featured Arab digital content creators in its official programme for the first time since adding the content creators track.
This regional recognition; strategically facilitated by regional consultancy Creator North; showcases creators whose platforms, voices, and communities are authentically rooted in the Arab world, signaling a fundamental shift in recognising the region's narrative influence.
During the festival, three pioneering voices claimed the spotlight in an independent capacity and featured, Ahmed El Ghandour (Egypt), the science communicator who engages 7.8 million YouTube followers; Ahmed Al Basheer (Iraq), the political satirist behind The Albasheer Show with 22.5 million followers globally; and Haifa Bsessio (Palestine), the empowerment-focused storyteller featured at the Forbes 30/50 Summit and Nobel Peace Prize concert.
Their presence reflects the strategic rise of the creator economy, which now encompasses over 1.5 million creators generating $300 million annually in the GCC alone.
Creator North's blueprint for Arab content creators representation
This milestone resulted from a strategic partnership between Cannes Lions and Creator North; the pioneering consultancy helping to facilitate the Arab creator economy's global ascent. As the region's first agency dedicated exclusively to creator strategy and brand partnerships, Creator North designs culturally intelligent opportunities where authentic voices drive measurable impact and regional sectoral growth.
Commenting on the occasion, Waleed Laham, Founder and CEO of Creator North stated: 'What we witnessed at Cannes Lions was not a symbolic presence, but a defining moment that confirms Arab content creators are now partners in shaping the global creative economy—not just because of their wide reach, but through the intellectual and creative value they bring to the global stage.'
Arab voices lead Cannes conversations as regional creator economy accelerates
During the Festival, the creators hosted two defining sessions with Ahmed El Ghandour engaging the 'Terrace Stage' audience with 'The Future of Friendship,' a timely exploration of human connection in our digital age. Simultaneously, Haifa Bsessio and Ahmed Al Basheer commanded the 'Creator Roof' stage with 'Stories That Survive: Creating Amid Crisis'; a resonant dialogue on transforming perspective into power through content born in challenging contexts.

Kira at Marsa Al Arab has mastered the balance of lively yet relaxing

If there was ever a restaurant that felt like it was‭ ‬'drawn up by a woman'‭, ‬it's Kira at Marsa Al Arab‭. ‬Every morsel‭, ‬every mixed drink‭, ‬and every motif feels as though it was created with the female gaze in‭ ‬mind‭.‬ The warm welcome‭, ‬pearlescent walls‭, ‬and comfortable seating instantly excited me‭ ‬—‭ ‬I felt like I sat in a Lana Del Rey song‭. ‬That initial happiness grew tenfold when I ordered my first drink‭: ‬a Parmesan Sour‭. ‬Whilst my role in writing this article is to put my experience into words‭, ‬I genuinely find it tough to describe this beverage‭. ‬It was creamy‭, ‬sour‭, ‬light‭ ‬—‭ ‬a playful balance of true decadence and tableside theatre‭, ‬making for the perfect girlie tipple‭.‬ The chef sent over some nibbles for us to enjoy‭, ‬one of which was a cucumber salad‭. ‬A seemingly boring start‭ ‬—‭ ‬but it was anything but‭. ‬The chunks of baby cucumber were dressed in a chilli oil vinaigrette that was delicious‭, ‬but what truly elevated the dish was the texture‭. ‬Each perfectly plated sliver was topped with an array of crunchy garnishes‭: ‬fried garlic chips‭, ‬black and white sesame‭, ‬and crunchy green onions‭, ‬among others‭.‬ Another highlight was the bread‭. ‬Again‭, ‬sounds simple‭, ‬right‭? ‬But this was no ordinary loaf‭. ‬The French baguettes are baked in-house by an expert pastry chef‭, ‬whose talents could rival some of my favourite bakers in Paris‭.‬ Our full starters were equally exciting‭, ‬my favourite being the delicate‭, ‬melt-in-the-mouth beef tartare served with tiny fried‭ ‬buns‭ ‬—‭ ‬the perfect mini mouthful‭. ‬Again‭, ‬very girl dinner coded‭. ‬Coinciding with our starters‭, ‬a beautiful woman emerged in a floor-length white dress and began to sing‭. ‬Usually‭, ‬entertainment at a long lunch isn't my thing‭, ‬but this elevated the experience seamlessly‭, ‬with her performing fan favourites from Dua Lipa to Fleetwood Mac‭.‬ For the mains‭, ‬we shared a whole lobster in yuzu butter‭. ‬It was fresh yet decadent‭, ‬served alongside charred corn dressed in desiccated coconut and black sesame‭. ‬It was fabulous‭ ‬—‭ ‬as lobster always is‭ ‬—‭ ‬but if I were to go back‭ (‬which I definitely will‭), ‬I'd opt to try more of the delicious‭, ‬playfully composed small plates‭. ‬They were utter perfection‭.‬ Overall‭, ‬I can't urge people to visit this restaurant enough‭. ‬It's mastered the balance of lively yet relaxing‭ ‬—‭ ‬with modern dishes and an experimental approach to mixology‭, ‬paired with welcome entertainment‭, ‬and a vibe that seems to stop time entirely‭.‬ Hero dish‭:‬‭ ‬ The perfectly balanced‭, ‬deliciously textural cucumber salad‭ ‬—‭ ‬ 9/10 Senses‭:‬‭ ‬ All five senses were perfectly engaged while seamlessly being put at ease‭ —‭ ‬ 8/10 Service‭:‬ The service was great‭, ‬a little slow at the start but once in the swing of things‭, ‬flawless‭! ‬—‭ ‬ 7/10‭ ‬

'Claquette': From Script to Screen Production

'Claquette' The event, held under the theme "From Red Cinema to Stage," represents a unique initiative that reflects Shams' commitment to supporting the local and regional drama content industry. The "Claquette" event, in turn, served as a practical link between writers and producers, providing them with a space to present and discuss projects and opening the way for real opportunities for production collaboration. This reflects Shams' commitment to linking creative training and professional empowerment to ensure sustainable impact. Sharjah, A Regional Hub for Creativity In this context, Rashid Abdullah Al Obaid, Director General of Sharjah Media City (Shams), said that Shams emphasises the need to link creativity with realistic production opportunities. It believes in the importance of providing an environment that nurtures talent and provides the tools and platforms that transforms from a mere idea on paper into a feasible project. The positive outcomes from the "Hekaya" project and the remarkable turnout for this event are living proof of Sharjah's position as a regional hub for creativity and media production in the Arab world. Shams Studios: Infrastructure for the New Age of Production At the beginning of the event, a visual presentation was presented revealing details of the "Shams Studios" project, which the city is developing to become one of the most prominent infrastructure projects supporting the film and media production industry in the region. The project includes the construction of six advanced studios across an area of 10,200 square metres, equipped with the latest cinematic technologies. This will be an ideal destination for local and international production companies, providing a professional indoor filming environment that eliminates the need for outdoor filming. The project represents a qualitative shift in Sharjah's media infrastructure and responds to the growing demand for advanced production spaces in the country and the region. A Drama Journey "From Script to Screen" As part of the "Claquette" events, a key panel discussion "From Script to Screen" was organised. Moderated by media personality Osama Alfa, the session featured Emirati actor and producer Ahmed Al Jasmi, Emirati writer and producer Mona Al Dhaheri, and producer Iyad Al Najjar. They discussed the importance of integrating the quality of dramatic scripts with professional execution, emphasising the need to build bridges between young talents and production companies. They also addressed the challenges of writing in light of digital transformations and the need to renew content to meet the aspirations of the Arab audience. Emirati actor and producer Ahmed Al Jasmi pointed out that the success of any drama production is not complete without genuine production support that believes in the content and talent, noting that production companies play a pivotal role in transforming good scripts into impactful works that reach the audience. He added that the "Claquette" event represents an effective model for connecting writers with producers, paving the way for the birth of new drama projects based on mature ideas and implemented within a professional environment that enhances the presence of local drama in the Arab world. For her part, Emirati writer and producer Mona Al Dhaheri emphasised that the "Hikayah - Writing Room" project is an inspiring model for developing drama scripts and honing young talent. She noted that what distinguishes the project is its provision of an integrated practical path that begins with training and ends with presenting scripts to decision-makers. Al Dhaheri added that a good script is the foundation of any successful production, and that empowering writers and giving them the opportunity to present their work instills a culture of appreciating the writer as a key driver in the creative process and enhances the quality of local and Arab drama content. Producer Iyad Al Najjar commented on the importance of the drama script, saying that the script is not just a starting point, it is the backbone of the entire production effort. He emphasised that the success of any drama project begins with a well-structured script, mature in concept, and capable of engaging the audience. He added that the "Claquette" experience proves that investing in good scripts is an investment in content sustainability. Al Najjar believes that a smart producer is one who captures these scripts in their early stages and develops them into works that have a real chance of success on screen. A Live Space for Networking and Promotion The event also featured an interactive open space, where "Hikayah" writers presented their projects to a number of producers, investors, and decision-makers, discussing with them the potential for collaboration, development, and marketing. This space also provided the writers with the opportunity to present their visions and experiences within a professional environment that encourages the exchange of ideas and creates realistic opportunities for co-production. Supporting Talent and Fostering a Creative Environment The importance of these unique initiatives launched by Sharjah Media City (Shams), such as "Hikayah" and "Idea Bank," lies in empowering local talent and supporting a sustainable drama production system that stems from the vision of the Emirate of Sharjah and reaches the Arab world. Attendees praised Shams' efforts in developing an integrated media system that combines training, promotion, and professional connections, emphasising that such initiatives open the door to a new phase of quality production in the region.

Spacetoon declared that production for Happiness Spreaders is already underway, with the series expected to premiere in the first quarter of 2026. The company claims to be renowned in the MENA region for pioneering the 'creator-to-character' strategy. This innovative global approach, which transforms popular online personalities into animated stars, was first successfully adapted for the MENA market by Spacetoon with their hit three-season series, The Moshaya Family Animation, launched four years ago. Building on this triumph, Spacetoon aims to continue to forge key partnerships with top creators, promising more fresh and compelling content this year to maintain its market dominance.
