Wimbledon's electronic line-calling woes continue as boos greet latest malfunction
Wimbledon was forced to explain yet another issue with the live electronic line-calling system on Tuesday after it malfunctioned again, only a day after it had expressed confidence that the problems that led to an embarrassing error on Sunday had been fixed. The latest incident occurred in the quarter-final between Taylor Fritz and Karen Khachanov. Serving at 0-15 in the opening game of the fourth set, Fritz missed his first serve, which was correctly called out. He then landed his second serve but when he hit his next forehand, which landed around four feet in, the automated system called 'fault', thinking it was a serve. The second serve had not been registered by the speed gun and the umpire, Louise Azemar-Engzell, was quickly on the phone to the control room. 'Ladies and gentleman, we will be replaying the last point due to a malfunction. The system is now working,' she said, to a smattering of boos from the crowd on No 1 Court. A Wimbledon spokesperson said the mistake had occurred because the ballboy was still on court when Fritz started his serve. 'The player's service motion began while the [boy] was still crossing the net and therefore the system didn't recognise the start of the point. As such the chair umpire instructed the point be replayed.' Wimbledon replaced line judges with automated live-calling this year and the incident on Tuesday is the latest in a string of issues, which peaked on Sunday when the system failed to call a backhand by Britain's Sonay Kartal that landed clearly long, which should have given Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova a 5-4 lead in the first set. At the time, the Russian accused the tournament of home bias but her anger abated as she went on to win the match. Tournament organisers said the technology had been turned off by mistake on that section of the court. Subsequently they 'removed the ability for Hawk-Eye operators to manually deactivate the ball tracking'. Khachanov said afterwards that he preferred having human line judges. '[The question] is why this is happening,' he said. 'Is it just like error of the machine or what's the reason? Sometimes it's scary to let machine do what they want.' 'In that situation it helped me because I got a first serve out of it,' he said. 'There's going to be some issues here and there. To be honest, I still think it's much better to just have the electronic line calling as opposed to the umpires because I do like not having to think about challenging calls in the middle of points. I think it's a better system.'

Arsenal consider player swap in £68m Eberechi Eze transfer with Crystal Palace
Arsenal are considering offering a player as part of their bid to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace, according to reports. Eze is on Arsenal's shortlist for the summer transfer window with Mikel Arteta keen to recruit a versatile attacking player alongside a new striker. Palace, however, are standing firm over Eze's availability and are demanding that Arsenal, or any other interested club, pay the 27-year-old's release clause, which could total £68 million after bonuses. Arsenal have already spent £55m on signing Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, plus a further £5m on Kepa Arrizabalaga, while they are also close to agreeing a €80m (£69m) deal with Sporting CP to sign Viktor Gyokeres and are set to sign Brentford captain Christian Norgaard for £12m. Eze would represent another significant outlay and according to The Sun, Arsenal are considering the prospect of including a player as part of their bid to Palace. The report adds that Eze is open to joining Arsenal, who are willing to offer Palace a 'promising defender' as a makeweight in the deal to sign Palace's talisman. Liverpool have also considered a move for Eze while last month, Paul Scholes urged Manchester United to sign the midfielder after he emerged as one of the only positives from England's 3-1 defeat to Senegal. Speaking after last summer's transfer window, Palace chairman Steve Parish admitted he was 'astounded' by the lack of interest in Eze. Ronaldo's future was up in the air this summer after he teased "this chapter is over" at the end of the last Saudi Pro League season, leading to speculation he could link up with rivals Al-Hilal. But the 40-year-old quickly ended speculation over his future by putting pen to paper with the Middle East outfit over a new deal that will reportedly earn him around £492million. That makes him the top-earning athlete in the world and Ronaldo has shown he has no plans to slow down or retire in the immediate future - having helped Portugal win the Nations League last month. He has also continued to plunder an impressive amount of goals after netting 35 times in 41 games last season. However, Petit - who won the Premier League with Arsenal in 1998 - believes that Ronaldo will not return to the top level in Europe after committing his future to Al-Nassr. "Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that he is done at the highest level with his new Saudi deal, but he confirmed that when he left Manchester United," Petit told Escapist Magazine. "Having said that, no one could have matched the crazy money he is being paid, but at 40 he is still playing well and performing for the national team. "I expect to see him at the World Cup next year but I'm not shocked he is staying in Saudi, no one could've matched those terms. They are crazy." Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr at the end of 2022 after an accrimonious departure from Manchester United, who he accused of "betraying" him by forcing him out of the club. The veteran star will go down as one of the greatest players to have played the game after netting a career total of 956 goals and he is now chasing 1,000. Ronaldo still appears to be hungrier than ever after signing another deal with Al-Nassr. When his new contract was announced, he wrote: "A new chapter begins. Same passion, same dream. Let's make history together." He said he received offers to play elsewhere this summer before ultimately committing his future to the Middle East, signing until 2027.
