IndiGo to start new routes to connect Assam's cities with India's major hubs: Himanta Biswa Sarma
'Good news for Assam's Air Travellers! Post my discussion with the Indigo management, the airline will start new routes to connect Assam's cities with major hubs of the country,' Sarma said in a post on X.
'The long-standing demand of a Jorhat-Delhi route will also be fulfilled from 20th September,' he added.
On Monday, IndiGo announced it will operate direct flights between Delhi and Jorhat in Assam (four times in a week) from September 20, 2025, and daily direct flights connecting the national capital to Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, from September 16, 2025.
These flights will strengthen connectivity from Delhi to the gateway to northeast India and southern Tamil Nadu, respectively, boosting tourism, facilitating trade, and supporting local businesses.
Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo, said, 'We are pleased to introduce exclusive direct flights from Delhi to Jorhat as well as Tiruchirappalli, reinforcing our commitment to expanding domestic connectivity and enhancing access across the country. These daily flights will strive to provide affordable travel options to explore the rich cultural, spiritual, and natural wonders these regions have to offer.'
Jorhat is both a spiritual and economic gem of northeast India. It is close to Majuli, the world's largest river island, which is a centre for Vaishnavite culture and monasteries.
Economically, Jorhat thrives on its tea industry, producing some of the finest teas globally, and serves as a hub for agriculture and trade. The city's proximity to Kaziranga National Park also boosts eco-tourism, supporting local livelihoods and conservation efforts.
Earlier on March 7, IndiGo announced the operation of a direct flight service between Tiruchirappalli and Jaffna from March 30, 2025.
This new route has been introduced to cater to the growing demand and will provide more options for both business and leisure travellers who wish to travel from South India to this historical gem in the northern province of Sri Lanka.
The daily direct flights will facilitate travel for our customers and foster economic growth and cultural exchange between the two regions.
Speaking about the new route, Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo, said, 'We are pleased to expand our presence in Sri Lanka with the launch of our exclusive Tiruchirappalli-Jaffna route.'
Tiruchirappalli, or Trichy, is a vibrant city in Tamil Nadu, known for its rich heritage, spiritual significance, and industrial growth.
Home to iconic landmarks like the Rockfort Temple and Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, it attracts pilgrims and history enthusiasts alike.
Trichy is also a key educational hub and industrial centre, housing NIT Trichy and a thriving manufacturing sector. With its strategic location, international airport, and growing economy, the city serves as a major gateway to southern India. (ANI)

IndiGo Flight Chaos: Air Hostess Folds Hands, Pilot Reassures Passengers
An IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Varanasi reportedly faced a two-hour delay in take-off on Saturday night, leaving passengers agitated. Many questioned the cabin crew about why aircraft testing was being conducted while they were still on board. A viral video on social media shows a visibly tense moment, where an air hostess, attempting to calm the situation, folds her hands and tries to explain the delay to the passengers. The nearly three-minute-long video, recorded by a passenger in conversation with the air hostess, shows several others expressing concern over the testing procedures. NDTV reported that the flight was delayed due to a technical issue that was identified before take-off. After the issue was checked, the flight took off from Mumbai. Furthermore, it landed in Varanasi at 11:40 pm, nearly two hours after its scheduled arrival. Social media posts identified the flight as IndiGo 6E-5028. In the now-viral video, the air hostess can be seen telling the passengers not to capture a video, to which the passengers protest and say that it is their right to make a video. After this, the air hostess folded her hands and said, "All the tests on the aircraft have been completed." However, the passenger further said why were they running the tests while they were on board. Several other passengers can be seen angered as well, and making a video of the incident. — MOHAMMAD ARIF (@arifchakiya) July 27, 2025 In a second video of the same flight, the aircraft's pilot is seen reassuring the passengers. She said, "We are fully ready for take-off in 10 minutes. If there is no more chaos and trust us, I guarantee you we will all reach Varanasi." Some of the passengers can be heard chanting, "Har Har Mahadev," and the pilot joins in. "Let's have a good flight, and let's all be positive. And you have to trust me that if there were any issue, I would not fly this aircraft. It is fit to fly. Let us all reach Varanasi safely, happily, and nicely. Please don't worry," she added. IndiGo to add more international destinations; to explore new MRO opportunities
New Delhi: IndiGo will continue to add more overseas destinations with A321 XLRs set to join the fleet this fiscal year and aims to increase its international capacity share to 40 per cent by 2030. Also, the country's largest airline plans to explore new opportunities in the MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) space, according to its annual report for 2024-25. IndiGo, which has been flying for over 18 years, has a domestic market share of 64.5 per cent, operates around 2,200 flights daily with more than 430 planes. "We will continue to add more destinations internationally, especially with XLRs coming in along with our newly leased wide body aircraft for long haul operations. From 28 per cent current international capacity share, we are aiming for 40 per cent by FY 2030," IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers said in his message in the annual report. Earlier this month, the carrier started flights to Manchester and Amsterdam that are being operated with Boeing 787 Dreamliners leased from Norway's Norse Atlantic. The long range A321 XLRs and wide-body A350-900s are expected to join the airline's fleet in the current fiscal year ending March 2026, and 2027, respectively. "IndiGo also plans to explore new opportunities in the MRO space as India's infrastructure development is picking up," it said. The airline is setting up an MRO facility in Bengaluru. In the annual report, the airline said its outlook remains promising, supported by a healthy demand environment and firm capacity growth. "While macroeconomic uncertainties and operating headwinds such as aircraft groundings and fuel cost volatility remain, IndiGo continues to proactively manage these challenges through fleet diversification, damp leasing strategies and strategic agreements with OEMs," it said. OEM refers to original equipment manufacturer.
