Children of FRU crash victims receive SSPN benefits
National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) chairman Datuk Seri Norliza Abdul Rahim said the benefits were derived from the late 46-year-old FRU officer's savings under two products – Simpan SSPN Prime and Simpan SSPN Plus.
The late Mohd Roslan had opened a Simpan SSPN Prime account for himself on May 7, making him eligible for a takaful protection benefit of RM1,000 and a death benefit of RM3,000.
'He also opened three Simpan SSPN Plus accounts under the Intan Package for his three children on March 31, 2019. With a monthly commitment of RM30 per account – RM20 for savings and RM10 for takaful – he qualified for Simpan SSPN Plus benefits, including an accidental death takaful coverage of RM60,000 per account, totalling RM180,000 across all three.
'Additionally, the beneficiaries are entitled to a death benefit of RM9,000 for the three accounts. This brings the total Simpan SSPN Plus benefits to RM189,000, and the overall benefits including Simpan SSPN Prime to RM193,000,' she said during the PTPTN Ziarah Kasih programme visit to Mohd Roslan's family home here today.
Norliza said another FRU personnel killed in the same accident, Corporal Amiruddin Zabri, 38, who was also a Simpan SSPN Prime depositor, received a takaful protection benefit and death benefit totalling RM4,000.
As part of the Ziarah Kasih programme, PTPTN also visited five homes of the FRU accident victims in Perak today.
During the visits, Norliza said PTPTN had provided corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributions in the form of cash amounting to RM15,000 to the children of the FRU crash victims, involving 15 individuals, with each receiving RM1,000 in the form of a Simpan SSPN Prime account.
'PTPTN hopes that through this CSR contribution and the takaful protection and death benefits from Simpan SSPN, the financial burden of the families left behind can be eased.
'Although no amount can replace their loss, the benefits received are hoped to safeguard the education of the children and support their future. As an agency under the Ministry of Higher Education, PTPTN remains committed to ensuring that the education of our future generation is well preserved,' she said.
In the incident that occurred at 8.50 am on Tuesday (May 13), nine FRU personnel were killed and nine others injured when the truck they were in collided with a stone-laden lorry on Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam, Teluk Intan, while returning to their base in Sungai Senam, Teluk Intan.

Secret 'gay party' in rural Kelantan sparks outrage among villagers
KOTA BARU: The quiet village of Kampung Kemumin, near Pengkalan Chepa, has been rocked by the shocking revelation of a secret gathering of more than 100 gay men. The event was held last month and exposed recently by Kelantan police. It has sparked outrage and disbelief in a community known for its strong Islamic values. One resident, who wished to be known only as Norliza, said the news was a bombshell. "I was completely shocked when I heard about the raid. Our village has never seen anything like this, not in Kelantan," said the 38-year-old eatery owner. Norliza said she learnt of the incident when the village head stopped by her shop on Thursday to share details from a police press conference. "To hear that it was a gay gathering and that police found condoms and HIV medication at the scene was deeply shocking. "We've always assumed such things only happen in big cities. Never here, in our backyard." She said the incident had severely tarnished the state's image. A labourer who only wanted to be known as Ahmad, 53, described the news as disturbing but necessary to confront. "It's a bitter pill to swallow, but this is the reality. Kelantan may be very Islamic, but that doesn't make it immune to immoral activities. "People need to wake up. These things are happening." He said the raid had opened villagers' eyes to the possibility of other unhealthy activities taking place in secret. "We were all taken aback when we heard that police raided a bungalow rented by the group. "Who knows what else could be going on under our noses?" A check at the homestay used for the gathering showed that it was operating as usual, with several guests seen on the premises. The property is at the edge of the village, near a riverbank. Kota Baru police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Rosdi Daud said investigations were ongoing. "We have detained three people and they have been charged under Section 292 of the Penal Code for possessing obscene materials. "Others were released after having their statements recorded. If necessary, we will call them back for further investigation."

Discontent flares up as JPJ slaps express bus passengers with RM300 fine for not buckling up -
THE recent spate of high-profile accidents has put road safety very much at the forefront of public agenda. The crash which claimed nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) members involved a lorry driver with previous convictions for drug offences. Then came another heart-wrenching tragedy on June 9 that killed 15 Universiti Putra Sultan Idris (UPSI) students with a number of issues arising from the accident. These include whether the driver was driving dangerously as well cs the road-worthiness of the vehicle. This has led to calls for a black box device and speed limiters being mandatory in all heavy vehicles. So imagine the shock that greeted passengers on express buses when they were handed fines for failing to wear seat belts in Kedah. As reported in the Harian Metro, the Kedah Road Transport Department (JPJ) issued compounds to 16 express and tour bus passengers for failing to wear seat belts during an enforcement operation on July 1. Undercover RTD personnel were deployed on board buses to discreetly monitor and record violations by drivers and passengers with compounds issued on the spot based on the recorded evidence. The news was shared on the Kedah Kini Facebook page and suffice to say, the reception was far from positive. One commenter called out the operation as untimely given that most folks are already struggling with the recently implemented Sales and Services Tax (SST) expansion which has further exacerbated the cost-of-living crisis. Just ignore the summons, declared one netizen. After all, many bus drivers who were summoned are still driving. He also noted that the RM300 fine 'could buy half-a-year's supply of rice'. Get your priorities straight was the message conveyed by one irate observer. He contended that there should be – first and foremost – roadworthiness tests on the vehicles. This should be followed on urine tests on the bus drivers to ensure they are not drug addicts. Some pointed out that the authorities were targeting the wrong people, highlighting that commuters using express buses were usually low-income earners. 'Why punish them?' seems to be the overriding sentiment. The general feeling tends to be that the guilty parties are allowed to get away scot-free while the common man-on-the-street is faulted. However, on the flip side, one commenter did point out that the law must be enforced. This is the only way a society can progress and prosper. Anyone unhappy with any laws can pressure (through the ballot box) the government of the day to make the necessary changes. Yes, the laws are there for a reason. For sure the passengers were in the wrong for not buckling up. But the point of contention with many commenters is that enforcement seems selective. As one commenter sarcastically remarked, 'as if such punitive actions will bring an end to fatal accidents involving buses'. The manner in which this issue is being handled highlights how the authorities are simply tone deaf and do NOT seem to have the well-being of the rakyat at heart. Surely, it could have been handled better. – July 4, 2025 Main image credit: Bernama
