Lions team v Waratahs: Farrell names 23 for third tour match in Australia

Telegraph2 days ago
Who will feature on Saturday against the Waratahs?
Good morning and welcome to the team announcement for the British and Irish Lions game against the New South Wales Waratahs on Saturday in Sydney. The Lions go into the Waratahs game off the back of a resounding 52-12 win over the Queensland Reds in Brisbane, running in eight tries, which followed an emphatic win over Western Force in Perth last weekend in the Lions' first game down under.
That victory though was marred by a serious injury to Elliot Daly, who went off in the second half with a suspected broken foreram. Daly was not actually due to play yesterday but was called into action after Hugo Keenan pulled out late due to illness. Telegraph Sport has revealed that Owen Farrell is the front-runner to receive a call-up to replace his Saracens team-mate Daly. If Farrell is called up as expected, he will not arrive in time for Saturday's match.
Saturday's game should represent first games of the tour for Scottish pair Blair Kinghorn and Ben White. Kinghorn joined up with the squad late due to his commitments with club side Toulouse as he started their Top 14 final victory over Bordeaux last weekend. White, who was with the Scotland squad in New Zealand, was called up earlier this week due to the tour-ending hamstring injury suffered by Welsh scrum-half Tomos Williams in the win over Western Force last weekend, thus potentially making it two tour-ending injuries in a matter of days for Andy Farrell's side.
With the first Test in Brisbane just over two weeks away, every training session and game could prove crucial for players pushing their case for a place in the Test side. Stay tuned for all the team news when it is announced.

Off-colour Lions made to work for victory over New South Wales Waratahs

Owen Farrell watched from the stands as the British and Irish Lions laboured to a 21-10 victory over New South Wales Waratahs in what was comfortably their worst performance since arriving in Australia. A fortnight out from the first Test against the Wallabies and the Lions struggled to put away a side that finished eighth in the Super Rugby table and had lost five of their last six matches. Even the arrival of a heavyweight bench could not provide the lift Andy Farrell's men needed at Allianz Stadium and a dismal second-half made for grim viewing with Alex Mitchell's 55th-minute try at least providing some breathing space. Full time in Sydney 🦁 #Lions2025 — British & Irish Lions (@lionsofficial) July 5, 2025 Henry Pollock was withdrawn from the back row shortly before kick-off because of a tight calf and it was a good match for the rising star of English rugby to miss with a number of Lions playing their way out of Test match contention. Only Scotland centres Sione Tuipulotu and Huw Jones and props Pierre Schoeman and Finlay Bealham distinguished themselves with the impressive Jones finishing with two tries, lifting his total for the tour to three. Owen Farrell arrived into camp on Friday after being called-up as a replacement for the injured Elliot Daly and witnessed a display that fell well short of previous outings against Western Force and Queensland Reds. The former England captain smiled as he was booed and cheered when shown on the big screen, with team-mate Will Stuart comically joining the jeering coming from home fans. The Waratahs fought their hearts out even though they were missing several key players such as Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii and Angus Bell to Australia duty against Fiji on Sunday. Taniela Tupou, dubbed the 'Tongan Thor', had at least been released back to the franchise in the hope he would find some form ahead of the Tests but instead he struggled as the Lions mined three scrum penalties in the opening quarter. Huw Jones at the double in the first half 🦁 #Lions2025 — British & Irish Lions (@lionsofficial) July 5, 2025 The tourists were dominating the set-piece, but it was the understanding of centres Tuipulotu and Jones that led to an opening try that was forged in Scotland. Jones crossed after being sent through a gap with a short pass from his Scotland centre colleague and then powered over for a second having also made the initial carry that drove the hosts backwards. Waratahs openside Charlie Gamble had seen a try chalked off for offside at the line-out but his team eventually succeeded in the 35th minute when Darby Lancaster capitalised on hesitant defending on the Lions' right wing. Hugo Keenan was enduring a nightmare debut after making error after error but he was far from alone as the familiar theme of dropped passes and poor handling continued to haunt Farrell's men. They led just 14-5 at the interval and when Ethan Dobbin finished a maul try one minute into the second half they suddenly found themselves in a tight spot, playing poorly against a side that was scrapping for everything. Mitchell settled the nerves when he took advantage of an overlap to dummy his way over and the Lions were unable to break through again in a desperately scrappy final quarter.

Sam Warburton 'turns off notifications' as pundits launch into Jac Morgan debate

Sam Warburton 'turns off notifications' as pundits launch into Jac Morgan debate The former Wales and Lions captain 'stuck his neck out' as he gave his thoughts on who should face Australia in the first Test The Sky Sports team debated the Lions starting team to face the Wallabies (Image: Sky ) Sky Sports pundits Sam Warburton, Will Greenwood and John Barclay have chewed the fat over Jac Morgan's Lions Test inclusion, with his selection the only one dividing them when it comes to the forwards. The trio discussed the possible make-up of Andy Farrell's XV for the opening Test against the Wallabies in two weeks' time following the turgid win over the Waratahs on Saturday. ‌ In their potential front eight, the pundits went with Ellis Genge, Dan Sheehan, Will Stuart, Joe McCarthy, Maro Itoje, Jac Morgan, Jack Conan and Ollie Chessum. ‌ It wasn't a selection without debate, however. "I'm going to stick my neck out and have a go. We had this pre-match and I'm not going to move from it as well. I think some of these players have been elevated since this game as well. I think this guy, McCarthy, since he's come on the scene in the last two years has just steps up game after game. Article continues below "Maro's exactly the same. "The one where we probably disagree a little bit is I've gone Morgan, John's gone Morgan and you've gone van der Flier as well. That's the only one out of these eight..." Greenwood added: "I think if you open it up, I think we'd all go nailed on 1, 2, 4, 5, 8. Genge, Sheehan, Itoje, McCarthy, Conan. I think we are all pretty strong there. We felt (Tadgh) Beirne might have been in it, in terms of six jersey. And in a way Chessum has got better by not playing. Three is absolutely still wide open. ‌ "You've gone Jac Morgan at seven while I've gone van der Flier as world player of the year and Farrell's relationship with him might get him that nod." "I think with the sevens you could literally flip a coin," added Barclay. Physicality of the front eight is what Warburton emphasised will be vital against the Wallabies. "These eight guys put it about physically," he added. Article continues below "They are obviously all skilled, all good at set-piece, all of them can ball-play to a degree as well. If I'm looking at what the most physical pack I can pick, this is where Tom Curry would enter this conversation, he's right up there from a physicality perspective. "Stuart was throwing it around. I really like what he brings in the loose as well. I look at that and we are going to be playing a big Australian team. This is a pack that can take that physicality to another level." The punditry team then went om to discuss the backs, and settled on a line-up which included Jamison Gibson-Park, Finn Russell, Sione Tuipoltu, Huw Jones, Will Freeman, Blair Kinghorn and James Lowe, with little debate, with the centre partnership the only sticking point between them.
