THE first words of the missing British backpacker who was found homeless in Peru have been revealed by a university pal who flew out to track her down.
Hannah Almond, 32, had vanished in Cusco, Peru, after being robbed and was left sleeping rough under a bridge.

The tourist from Grimsby is said to have wrapped her arms around pal Matti and told him "I love you" after local Piero Villanueva found her slumped on a pavement.
Piero - a Good Samaritan - had managed to track Hannah down after briefly meeting her in Lima.
Matti - who reportedly met Hannah when they studied together at Leeds Beckett University - had flown out on an urgent mission to rescue her.
He said: "I came straight off the flight, and before I got to my accommodation I got the taxi to drop me off at the main square where she was with her friend.
"She wrapped her arms around me and said 'I love you'.
"She was wearing superman pyjamas given to her by a friend as she has nothing to her name.
"Minimal clothing, no money, and no personal items like a phone or passport."
Matti also helped Hannah reunite with some of the pals she had originally gone travelling with.
Speaking of Hannah's fragile state, he told MailOnline: "I think she was overwhelmed when I saw her if I'm honest.

"After some time she has expressed love and gratitude for me being here. We sat and had a bottle of water and talked about home.
"She didn't want to eat anything at the time. We have listened to some music that reminded us of friends and times back in Leeds."
According to Matti, Hannah has made calls back to home in Grimsby, with the pal ensuring she gets the help she needs and paying for her expenses while they remain in Peru.
Local hero Piero confirmed he found Hannah yesterday before posting a smiling selfie of them together.
In an interview with a local TV station, he described how Hannah recognised him and broke down in tears before agreeing to leave with him.
He said: "I have just found her. She is safe and well. I'd like to thank the authorities and the people who contacted me so I could help her.
"Hannah recognised me and approached me crying and I asked her to leave with me. Thanks God she's safe."
Piero had been liaising with the British Consul and Hannah's friends in a WhatsApp group, coordinating efforts to track her down.

He searched late into the night on Saturday after she was last seen near Cusco's San Pedro market.
He said: 'We searched from 7pm until 3am, and again on Sunday.'
Footage from local media shows the pair together walking through Cusco together shortly after their reunion.
A GoFundMe page set up to help bring Hannah home confirmed she had been found thanks to the massive online effort.
A friend wrote: "Due to the help of everyone sharing the story, Hannah has thankfully been found and one of her friends is on the way to Cusco to persuade her to accept support and come home.
"We know she has been refusing help due to the complexity of her mental health, so it is most likely that she will need to be placed into psychiatric care before getting a flight back.
"This is an ongoing process but we are doing all we can to bring her back safely."
Another pal Sophie Wallace revealed the fashion graduate had travelled to Peru in March "hoping for an adventure" but ended up in a "terrifying and heartbreaking situation".
She said: "She was robbed and assaulted, losing her passport, phone, and all of her money.
"Since then Hannah's mental health, something she has long struggled with, has severely declined.
"She is now in the midst of a mental health crisis, living under a bridge with a homeless man she befriended — the only person she currently trusts."
Attempts to get her help through the embassy or police had failed, with Sophie adding: "She is extremely vulnerable, isolated, and not safe living on the streets of Peru."

Fears for her safety deepened after she had her belongings burned and was evicted from her makeshift shelter under the Belén Bridge.
Mark Atkinson, the British Consul in Peru, said Hannah had arrived in Cusco in March and had not intended to overstay her visa.
He revealed her immigration status was now "in limbo".
He said that before she vanished, the embassy had offered support — including hotel stays and food — but she kept returning to sleep under the same bridge.
Local media reports say she is now 'being cared for and accompanied' and that repatriation procedures are underway.
Piero had spoken just hours before finding her about why he felt compelled to act.
"I met Hannah in Lima where I come from," he said.
"I decided to travel to Cusco at the request of her friends and family after seeing her situation online — she was sleeping under a bridge."
He added: 'She didn't have money or documents after being robbed.
"She was a victim of the insecurity in Cusco."

Susan McNarey, 61, orchestrated a harassment campaign against the family of the late police chief Sir John Orr, who was in charge of the Lockerbie bomb inquiry. A sheriff at Dumfries Sheriff Court ordered McNarey to get urgent mental health treatment after she was put on trial over the stalking campaign in 2022. But after spending time in hospital, McNarey emerged to set up The Gaza Team, which claims to help hundreds of babies in the crisis zone stay alive. Sources close to the John Orr case claim McNarey's recent history makes her unsuitable to administer such sums of cash, with no proper scrutiny or accountability. One said: 'Sir John's family have been distressed to hear that this woman has raised such a massive amount of money after what they were put through. 'McNarey was lurking around their father's grave at a time when the family had gathered to pay their respects. She left a wreath with a disturbing message and seemed to believe the tangled story she had created in her own head. 'The Crown Office made clear that McNarey would be forced to seek psychiatric help.' Cash donated to a GoFundMe page goes straight to McNarey, who also collects further large sums direct to her Paypal account. She claims that every penny goes directly to supplying aid. McNarey appalled members of the Orr family after she turned up at the grave of the senior lawman - who was the former chief constable of Strathclyde Police - leaving a creepy wreath at the same time his loved ones had gathered to pay respects. She was accused of writing letters and emails that made wild claims about Orr, claiming she had an affair with him and that they collaborated together with their own experiments to find a cure for coronavirus. In a stalking campaign of more than two years, McNarey falsely claimed Sir John, who died in 2018 at 72, had been involved in torture, rape, human trafficking and prostitution. She claimed in court that Sir John's detective son paid to have her and her daughter attacked. But after being hit with a five year Non-Harassment Order against victims, McNarey emerged from hospital and set up the fundraiser for The Gaza Team, which she runs from her new home in Turkey. On the GoFundMe page, McNarey, 61, claims to be an expert in 'disaster management'. She writes: 'Hello, I'm Susan from Scotland, trained in disaster management and organising supply chains in areas of genocide, war, poverty and pandemic. 'Our pro-active ground teams in Gaza organise the regular distribution of baby formula, the daily cooking and distribution of food to displaced babies, orphans & children who would otherwise have starved. Her Facebook page claims to have recently delivered 100 tonnes of baby milk formula to Gaza, despite an Israeli blockade. On Facebook, McNarey's claims have been widely challenged and she has been accused of ignoring or blocking those who are critical of her. At Dumfries Sheriff Court in 2022, McNarey sacked her lawyer and conducted her own defence. Sir John's sons - both police detectives - gave testimony against McNarey at court. McNarey, who ran a wood burning stove business in Ayrshire, claimed in court she worked in 'counter terrorism' for Margaret Thatcher's government between 1985 and 1988 and also had experience in 'disaster planning operations' from time spent in China. McNarey told the court: 'My defence is I'm trying to prevent deaths from coronavirus. The information I carry is life-threatening and onerous and correct.' The court heard she regularly visited the grave of Sir John and left sunflowers and notes signed 'Eva'. McNarey claimed she and Sir John jointly engaged in 'virological work' and carried out experiments into coronaviruses between 2005 and 2013. The fantasist also claimed she was the victim of an attempted murder after being set upon by '17 black belts' in 1993 while with a police surveillance officer, while carrying out investigations into Lockerbie. She alleged she was in a relationship with Sir John in the 1980s and the pair stayed together at a cottage in Cumbria. David Moran, a retired police detective who was a neighbour to McNarey's adoptive parents in Glasgow's Jordanhill, told the court McNarey contacted him repeatedly in 2019 in person and by letter. He told the court: 'You just need to read the letters to see it's all just nonsense, it was fantasy.' Despite taking the stand during the trial in 2022, McNarey was deemed unfit to stand trial. Sheriff Speir nonetheless held an Evidence of Facts Hearing over two days and believed it to be proven that McNarey engaged in a course of conduct that caused fear and alarm towards the sons of John Orr between June 2018 and September 2020 in Glasgow and at a cemetery in Kilmarnock. The Sheriff granted a Compulsion Order for 6 months, meaning that, due to the mental illness of the accused, she could not be sent to prison but must stay in hospital for treatment or have treatment in the community. The Sheriff also granted a Non Harassment Order for five years, ordering McNarey to keep away from the Orr brothers and another victim. Sir John Orr was back in the spotlight recently in the major drama about Lockerbie, where he was played by Peter Mullan. Sir John led the investigation into the terrorist atrocity on Pan Am Flight 103 that killed 270 people in December 1988. The former Kilmarnock chairman and grandad of eight was knighted by the Queen in 2001 for his services to policing. McNarey now claims to be based in Istanbul, Turkey, and claims her missionary work has led to serious illness and near death from exhaustion. In response to questions about how the money is spent, she claims to have sold a block of flats in Kilmarnock to fund her life. On Facebook, many cautionary posts have been made about The Gaza Team. When the Daily Record called McNarey, she said the funds from GoFundMe - and far more - was channelled through her own bank account to aid workers in Gaza. She said: 'We have two teams on the ground and we have clear evidence that our funds are directly saving the lives of babies in Gaza. 'If you write anything about this you will be killing babies in Gaza.' McNarey later sent several emails which revealed her ongoing obsession with the Lockerbie bombing, which she still believes she has crucial knowledge of. She also made further unsubstantiated claims about Sir John Orr. McNarey said her disaster planning expertise was gained at a college in Israel many years ago.

She led with the question because the documentary later told the audience people still don't believe her - eight years on. But that is despite the jail sentence of Lukasz Herba, a 30-year-old Polish computer programmer from Oldbury, West Midlands, who had drugged, kidnapped and driven Chloe 120 miles to a remote farmhouse near Turin, where she was held hostage for one week. The documentary comes after a man brutally killed a woman on their first date and left her body parts around a town. The show highlighted how Chloe, then 20, was dismissed as a money-grabber who wanted only to be famous. She was encouraged by her agent to go to Milan for a modelling job, but this was actually fake and a lure by Herba to entrap Chloe. Herba was primed to grab the glamour model from behind and bundle her into a suitcase. Injected with ketamine and chained to furniture, she was forced to sleep on the floor of a remote farmhouse. Photographs of her lying unconscious in skimpy clothing were sent to her manager in London, along with a demand for €300,000 (£260,000). If the ransom wasn't paid within a week, she would be auctioned off as a sex slave. Although she was eventually released, Chloe faced another battle to rebuild her life because many didn't believe her graphic and appalling story. Recalling her childhood, Chloe, now 28, said in the documentary: "I had a lot of difficulties with communication... I'd react in the wrong way. If I was being told off I would smile. I just had the wrong reactions to things." The model, from Croydon, south London, told how she has since been diagnosed with autism, something she believes explains so much – not just about her reactions during her kidnap ordeal, but about her life before and since. In the TV show last night, the mum continued: "Autism plays a big part in the way that I reacted, and that was confusing to neurotypical people... People disassociate with events that have happened or have a delayed reaction, especially after trauma. So, it can't all be put down to a diagnosis, and that shouldn't affect the way people treated me."

The 60-year-old Brit called the alpine rescue service to inform officials rocks were falling from above as he attempted to traverse the Via Ferrata Berti, a mountain path partially supported by metal ropes and stairs. A helicopter was deployed from nearby San Vito di Cadore in northeast Italy to rescue the tourist, who has not been named. The man, who was not injured, had reached an altitude of 2,400 metres and was "right in the middle of the landslide" when he was freed on Thursday afternoon. The rescue comes following a warning to Brit tourists who are planning all-inclusive holidays to Spain. Nicola Cherubin, head of the rescue service, said the man had told her team he did not see the warning signs. He has since been charged €14,225 (£12,300), with €11,160 of that covering the helicopter rescue, according to The Guardian. "Rocks have been falling continually in that area for the past two months. With these landslides, it is not secure. He was really afraid," Ms Cherubin told the Daily Telegraph. Signs in English on the trail said the route was closed "due to risk of collapse" and ordered people not to "go beyond this warning". The rescue service said the Ferrata Berti was closed because of "continuous rock discharge from the Croda Marcora landslide". But in July, two Belgian hikers were rescued from the same trail. They, though, have not been charged the same fee from the volunteer rescue service because Belgium is part of the European Union. The UK formally left this on January 31, 2020, following the Brexit vote several years prior - and now half of Brits want another referendum, a survey says. The mountain rescue service told The Times the British man was charged by the regional health service of Veneto. A spokesman said: "If someone calls because they are tired or stuck because they find themselves in a place where they shouldn't be, or if they are unharmed with no health issue, they have to pay. If you are from outside the EU without insurance, you have to pay more." It is unclear where exactly in the UK the tourist is from. Rescuers told the hiker to stay put while they attempted to navigate cloud cover. One helicopter was dispatched before it was called elsewhere. Another arrived two hours after the hiker's call, it is reported today.
