India's May palm oil imports surge 84% m/m to hit six-month high

Time of India12-06-2025
India's palm oil imports surged to a six-month peak in May, driven by attractive pricing compared to soyoil and sunflower oil, alongside dwindling inventories. This surge propelled overall vegetable oil imports to 1.19 million tons, the highest since December. Anticipated increased palm oil imports in June, potentially reaching 850,000 tons, are expected due to the continued price advantage.

India's palm oil imports jumped to a six-month high in May, driven by low inventories and the tropical oil's price discount to rival soyoil and sunflower oil, which prompted refiners to boost purchases, an industry body said on Thursday.Higher imports of palm and soyoil by India, the world's biggest buyer of vegetable oils, could support Malaysian palm oil prices and U.S. soyoil futures.Palm oil imports rose 84% in May from April to stand at 592,888 metric tons, the highest since November 2024, the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA) said.India imported an average of more than 750,000 tons of palm oil each month during the marketing year that ended in October 2024, the SEA said.Imports of soyoil increased 10.4% to 398,585 tons, the highest since January, and sunflower oil imports rose 1.9% to 183,555 tons, it added.Higher imports of palm oil and soyoil lifted India's total vegetable oil imports in May by 33% from a month before to 1.19 million tons, the highest since December, it said.Below-average imports from January to April reduced domestic vegetable oil stocks to 1.33 million tons by June 1, the lowest since July 2020, according to SEA data.Palm oil imports are likely to increase further in June and could rise to about 850,000 tons, as the oil is trading at a discount to soyoil, said Rajesh Patel, managing partner at GGN Research, an edible oil trader. Soyoil imports in June will hold steady around 400,000 tons, Patel said.India buys palm oil mainly from Indonesia and Malaysia, while it imports soyoil and sunflower oil from Argentina, Brazil, Russia and Ukraine.Vegetable oil imports are expected to pick up in the coming months as this month's duty cut will help boost demand, said a New Delhi-based trader.India halved the basic import tax on crude edible oils to 10% in a bid to reduce food prices and help the domestic refining industry.

AI talent gap: Savvy freshers bag 4x more pay

Representational Image BENGALURU: Technology companies are facing a significant shortfall in AI-specialised talent, with just 15-20% of the workforce trained in artificial intelligence. This has prompted a shift in hiring strategies across the sector. From major IT services firms like HCLTech to digital engineering players like Publicis Sapient and emerging AI startups such as StaqU, the message is consistent: the available talent pool is struggling to match the rapidly growing demand. "There just aren't that many people in the market with AI skills," said Shefali Sharma Garg, chief people officer at Publicis Sapient. "Our approach is to hire agile talent who can evolve as AI matures. It's moving fast, and adaptability is key." The most sought-after roles include engineers skilled in building, training, and deploying AI models, as well as professionals capable of working alongside intelligent systems to drive business outcomes. As a result, compensation for individuals with specialised AI expertise has spiked. HCLTech reports offering up to four times the standard entry-level salary for freshers with niche AI competencies. "We focus on quality over quantity," said Ramachandran Sundararajan, chief people officer at HCLTech. "Roughly 15-20% of our campus intake this year will be specialised hires, and we're happy to expand that if more candidates meet our benchmark." AI skilled freshers At Gurugram-based AI startup StaqU, the recruitment model revolves around hiring young, self-taught engineers - even before they graduate. "We don't hire based on years of experience," said Atul Rai, CEO and co-founder. "We evaluate GitHub contributions, community feedback, and research output. Someone with two years of hands-on GitHub work in AI is more valuable to us than someone with two decades in Java." Yet, sourcing such talent remains a challenge. Rai highlights a broader issue: India's limited research infrastructure and funding prevent it from building foundational AI models on par with countries like the US and China. "We're not building LLMs. We're building applications on top of them - and for that, we need adaptable AI engineers, not just coders," he added. The shortage is also evident at E2E Networks, a cloud-native company empanelled by MeitY. "AI has no fixed curriculum. What's in demand today didn't exist two years ago," said Mohammed Imran, CTO of E2E. "Only two out of 10 candidates clear our AI hiring process." This gap is mirrored in broader industry data. According to a recent Bain & Company report, AI-related job postings have grown at an annual rate of 21% since 2019, with salaries rising by 11%. Still, the supply of skilled professionals hasn't kept pace. Bain projects that India's AI industry will generate 2.3 million jobs by 2027. However, the talent pool is estimated to reach just 1.2 million-leaving over a million positions to be filled through upskilling and training initiatives. Europe revival helps IT survive quarter shocks

Academy Empower your mind, elevate your skills Robust outsourcing demand from Europe helped cushion revenue growth in at least three of India's top six software services exporters during the June quarter. LTIMindtree , and Tech Mahindra gained new business from European clients, marking a revival for the region after three quarters of deal slowdown. Overall revenues in these companies rose in low single digits in the three months ended June."Europe has become an interesting case of late. It is starting to build tech capabilities to maintain its tech sovereignty, which at the moment is heavily US is some regionality in the recovery of IT spend in Europe in the first half of calendar year 2025," said Ashutosh Sharma, vice president and research director at US-based research and advisory firm said UK, Ireland, and Benelux (Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg-three neighbouring countries in Western Europe) are doing fairly well even as other major economies such as France and Germany have stayed mostly flat or slowed momentum has picked up pace, especially in cloud, generative AI , digital and cybersecurity, experts said. Europe comprises around 20-30% of the global market for India's top-tier IT firms while the US is at 40-50%.The recovery in deal activity comes at a time when the US, the world's largest technology outsourcing market, navigates trade and tariff-led policy uncertainties.
