Newport Magistrates' Court heard how the incident happened on April 3 last year.
The defendant was jailed for 17 weeks but it was sentence was suspended for 12 months 'because there's a reasonable prospect of rehabilitation in the community'.
Maund, of Westfield, must carry out 200 hours of unpaid work and pay a £154 surcharge and £85 costs.
He was disqualified from driving for 18 months.

Police appeal after pedestrian injured in Poole
Dorset Police are appealing for witnesses after a man in his 60s was injured in a collision with a car in Poole. It happened on Friday on Constitution Hill Road, near to the junction with Jellicoe Close and involved a grey Nissan Qashqai car. Emergency services attended the scene and the pedestrian was taken to hospital for treatment to injuries that were believed to be serious but not life-threatening. Police Constable Dan Yates, of the Roads Policing Team, said: 'We are conducting enquiries to establish the full circumstances of this collision. 'I am keen to hear from any witnesses who have not already spoken to police, or any motorists who were in the area and may have captured relevant dashcam footage.'
