Emma Raducanu needs a permanent coach and I cannot commit to it
The 22-year-old reached the third round at Wimbledon after knocking out Mimi Xu and former champion Marketa Vondrousova before giving world number one Aryna Sabalenka a scare in a narrow 7-6 (6) 6-4 defeat.
But Petchey insists his TV commentating commitments mean he cannot take on the role full-time.
'I think at the moment we are a bit more short term,' he told the Nothing Ventured podcast.
'She's practising this week in London and her next tournament is Washington, and she'll stay in the States the whole time.
'Our situation is a little fluid at the moment. I am going to help her this week as much as I can, I have some other commitments I can't get out of.
'We are very aware she needs a second coach to come on board and maybe just one coach, not me, as well.
'All I am trying to do is facilitate the best possible environment for Emma to produce the tennis she can.
'Whether that involves me or does not involve me is not a question that I'm worried about. We are just trying to find something that will be stable or good for her.'

The Sabalenka match thrilled a late-night Centre Court crowd and offered more encouragement that Raducanu can return to the level which carried her to the US Open title in 2021.
'It was a great tennis match,' added Petchey, 54. 'It's been pretty positive from a point of view you can reflect on the fact the match was great, and get feedback from people talking about it.
'I've sought out opinions from people I respect in the industry, coaches, asking them what they felt about the match and what she could have done better and that gives you a chance to formulate a plan going forward for this week and in the future.'

Liverpool handed positive Alexander Isak transfer update - 'Only see him joining'
Liverpool have been linked with a move for Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak, with the Sweden international said to have asked to leave the Magpies this summer Former Liverpool star Stan Collymore has tipped Newcastle striker Alexander Isak to make the switch to Anfield this summer, claiming discussions have been ongoing for over 12 months. The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for the Swedish striker for several weeks but appeared to cool their interest when Newcastle refused to do business earlier in the window. In response, Liverpool pivoted to Hugo Ekitike, signing the French forward in a £79million deal. But now it appears Isak is pushing for an exit, with the 25-year-old telling Newcastle his wants to explore his options. As such, the door has been reopened, and Liverpool could be set to pounce. Isak has opted out of Newcastle's pre-season tour of Asia while his future gets sorted ahead of what could be a British transfer record departure from St James' Park. The Magpies are reportedly holding their ground, insisting on a valuation of more than £150m if they are to consider selling him. With the expected exits of Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa, combined with growing interest in Luis Diaz, Liverpool are believed to still be targeting new attackers before the transfer window closes, and Isak remains their top target. Collymore, who scored 35 goals for Liverpool, is confident the move will go ahead. "I can only see Alexander Isak joining Liverpool if he does leave Newcastle, which is now expected," he wrote in his column for CaughtOffside. "I think this has been something that's been ongoing probably for 12 months or more. I think the expectation from Newcastle was that it was going to be next season that other clubs were going to bid. Adorable moment tennis star Anna Kalinskaya's pet dog storms the court
Russian tennis star Anna Kalinskaya celebrated reaching the final of the DC Open with the help of her pet Bella after the dog twice stormed the court in Washington DC. On Saturday night, the 26-year-old secured a 6-4 6-3 semifinal win over British star Emma Raducanu - and she was soon joined by Bella. The dog followed her owner around the court - tail wagging - before being hoisted into the air as the crowd cheered the new darling of the DC Open. Only a day earlier, Bella - who even has her own credentials for the tournament - had again found her way on to the court after Kalinskaya beat No 4 seed Clara Tauson. As the Russian packed her bags following the straight-sets win, cameras caught the small dog sprinting across the court. The puppy, wearing a pink harness and dragging along a pink leash, ran straight for Kalinskaya - much to the amusement of the crowd in DC. The world No 39 was briefly unaware that she had a visitor, with the dog standing behind its oblivious owner while she gathered her possessions. VIP: Earlier on Friday, Bella watched the quarterfinal from her own seat in the Russian's box Eventually, however, Kalinskaya scooped up her pet and used its paw to 'wave' to the crowd at the DC Open, which serves as one of the warm-up events for the US Open. The Russian player then carried Bella over to her team before continuing to celebrate the quarterfinal win. Earlier, pictures from DC showed Bella watching her owner from the stands. She was given her own chair and a towel to sit on. On a few weeks ago, Kalinskaya lost to Denmark's Tauson in the second round of Wimbledon but she exacted revenge with a 6-3 7-5 win.
