Kota Kinabalu: Parti Kerjasama Anak Negeri President Datuk Henrynus Amin has called for Sabah's ongoing political uncertainty to be resolved through democratic means, urging all parties to respect the people's right to decide the future leadership of the State. Describing the current political situation as 'dynamic, complex, fluid and often mired in controversy', he said Sabah's political landscape has long been characterised by frequent changes in government and shifting allegiances among elected representatives. 'We have seen how leaders of small parties, with only one or two parliamentary seats, once rushed to pledge loyalty to the Prime Minister in Putrajaya. Today, some of those same leaders are chanting anti-Malaya slogans and claiming political purity,' he said in a statement Wednesday. He said while these leaders previously aligned themselves with national coalitions such as Pakatan Harapan (PH), Perikatan Nasional (PN) or Barisan Nasional (BN) and enjoyed Federal posts and privileges, many are now positioning themselves as critics of the Federal system. Henrynus also criticised the recent exchange of conflicting statements among Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), PH, BN and Warisan leaders over the 17th Sabah State Election, which he said has only deepened confusion and frustration among the public. 'While these parties are partners in the Federal Government, they openly oppose and criticise each other at the State level. This gives mixed signals, heightens tensions and undermines political coherence,' he said, warning that such actions could erode public trust in party politics and governance. Calling for a 'total change or revamp' of the governing political structure in Sabah, Henrynus said the best solution is to return the mandate to the people through a clean, fair and friendly State election. 'Let every party and leader present their vision and commitment to Sabah's future. Let the people decide,' he stressed. He urged all political leaders to act with statesmanship and not fear the democratic process, saying only through a peaceful electoral contest can the state restore legitimacy, unity and direction. 'It is time to rise above personal interests and partisan skirmishes. (File pic) PETALING JAYA: Chief Judge of Malaya Hasnah Hashim will serve as acting chief justice following the retirement of Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat. The Office of the Chief Registrar said the appointment was in line with Article 131A of the Federal Constitution, and Sections 9(1)(b) and 9(3) of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964. 'The chief judge of Malaya shall exercise the powers or perform the duties of the office of the chief justice, including its constitutional functions, until the position is filled,' it said in a statement today. 'The Malaysian judiciary remains steadfast in carrying out its responsibility as the guardian of justice, and will continue to serve the people and the nation with the utmost dedication.' Tengku Maimun, the country's first female chief justice, retired on Monday after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 66. Hasnah, who was appointed chief judge of Malaya in November last year, recently received a six-month extension to her tenure. She is due to retire on Nov 14. The next meeting is set to take place in two weeks. A shortlist of candidates is usually provided by the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC), set up under the JAC Act 2009. Two children among five injured in Russia's air attack on Odesa, Ukraine says

A multi-storey residential building and other civilian infrastructure were damaged, regional governor Oleh Kiper said on the Telegram messaging app. Six apartments were completely destroyed, another 36 were partially damaged, he said. "The children, who were poisoned by combustion products, were hospitalized," Kiper said. The other three injured people, all adults, received medical aid on the site. The full scale of the attack was not immediately known. There was no immediate comment from Russia about the attack. Both sides deny targeting civilians in their strikes during the war that Russia launched against Ukraine more than three years ago. But thousands of civilians have died in the conflict, the vast majority of them Ukrainian. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine posted on its Facebook page photos showing rescuers carrying children in the dark out of a multi-storey apartment building on fire and firefighters fighting the blaze. No shielding policy for civil servants

Kota Kinabalu: Integrity must remain a core principle in the civil service to maintain public trust in government institutions, said Sabah Federal Secretary Datuk Seri Rosli Isa. He said the Federal Government spends over RM17 billion annually on salaries for federal civil servants in Sabah alone. 'That figure alone reflects the scale and importance of the civil service. With it comes the duty to carry out responsibilities with honesty and full accountability,' he said when officiating the Seminar on Integrity Governance: The Core of Public Service at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), here on Wednesday. He also noted that Sabah has over 126,000 civil servants across federal and state levels, with more than 27,000 serving under the State Government. 'With such a large public sector workforce, it is crucial that integrity is upheld at all levels to ensure the system functions efficiently and public trust is maintained,' he said. Rosli said integrity goes beyond avoiding corruption, and includes upholding values and moral strength, especially when faced with internal and external pressures. He stressed that civil servants must not be protected from investigation if misconduct occurs. 'If an offence has been committed, the authorities must be allowed to take appropriate action. Our role is to foster a culture of ethics and responsibility,' he said. He also cautioned against assuming that isolated cases reflect the conduct of the entire civil service, saying such assumptions risk demoralising those who remain committed to doing their jobs well. The seminar was jointly organised by the Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority (Sedia) and Intan Sabah Regional Campus, drawing over 800 participants from Federal and State agencies. Sedia Chief Executive Datuk Seri Hashim Paijan said the programme aimed to strengthen awareness of governance and integrity among public officers. 'We've implemented our own Organisational Anti-Corruption Plan at Sedia. Seminars like this reinforce our commitment to transparency and ethical conduct in all government operations,' he said. Also present were Sabah MACC Director Datuk S. Karunanithy, Deputy Director of State Audit Khairul Anuar Amat Johari, heads of departments and invited panel speakers.
