MLC 2025: Texas Super Kings retires out Daryl Mitchell in tactical masterstroke; Ferreira repays faith with blistering knock
After rain had reduced the match at Lauderhill to a five-overs-a-side contest, Texas lost skipper Marcus Stoinis in the first over while Mitchell, the other opener, struggled to get going.
The New Zealander, who has a 138-plus strike rate in Twenty20 Internationals, made six runs off five balls before being retired out.
New man in Donovan Ferreira then blasted five sixes in his blistering 37 not out off nine balls to deflate Washington.

Ferreira and Shubham Ranjane, who top-scored with an unbeaten 39, plundered 53 runs in two overs to power the Super Kings to a commanding 87 for two.
Defending champion Washington managed 44 for four in reply with skipper Glenn Maxwell falling for a first-ball duck.
Texas captain Stoinis said the tournament could see more and more cases of teams retiring out struggling batters, while player of the match Ferreira said coach Stephen Fleming prepared him for the situation.
'Flem obviously said, 'Be ready, we're going to take Mitch out',' said the South African.
'Obviously it's never nice taking a player out but hopefully he understands it's for the better of the team and luckily for us, tonight, it paid off.'
Texas rose to second place, behind San Francisco Unicorns, following its sixth win in eight matches.

Play More T20 Cricket, Take One Day Cricket Away: Heinrich Klaasen Explains Sudden Retirement From International Cricket
Former South African cricketer Heinrich Klaasen, who retired from international cricket just last month after seven impactful years, has shared powerful insights into the future of the sport. At 33, Klaasen believes the calendar is overcrowded and in need of reform. In an interview, he suggested that the ICC should consider scrapping bilateral One-Day Internationals (ODIs) to make room for formats that resonate more with fans namely Test matches and T20s. 'I think the only change that I will make is probably take [bilateral] one‑day cricket away from international cricket. Make it more Test matches for teams that don't play a lot of Test matches. Play more T20 cricket, because that's what the people want to see. You can keep your one‑day World Cups, and just maybe a month before the one‑day World Cup starts, you play five games for every team, just to get used to that format," he told cricbuzz. Klaasen on Financial Pressures Klaasen also addressed player retention, particularly in South Africa. He emphasized the need for national boards to support their players financially so they aren't compelled to chase wealth in global leagues. 'It's not a big change that you have to make in that format. It's more the international teams that you probably will struggle with. If they don't take care of the international players, they will go out and go play leagues to make some extra cash. If you look at the Aussies and the England boys, they get looked after well, so they don't need to go around the world and go play all these leagues.' Klaasen's International Milestones Klaasen burst onto the international scene in 2018, quickly emerging as a commanding force in South Africa's white-ball lineup. In over 60 ODIs, he amassed more than 2,000 runs at a stellar average close to 44, highlighted by an explosive 174 against Australia in 2023 a record second-highest score by a number-five batsman. In T20Is, he featured in 58 matches with an impressive strike rate of 141.84. His final appearance came during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final against New Zealand. Heinrich Klaasen's departure marks the end of a thrilling chapter not only for his dynamic batting, but also for his bold suggestions on how the future of global cricket might be reshaped.

Its Like Portugal Resting Ronaldo: Left Bewildered, Dale Steyn Lashes At India For Benching Jasprit Bumrah
Legendary South African pacer Dale Steyn didn't hold back in his criticism of India's decision to leave Jasprit Bumrah out of the playing XI for the Edgbaston Test. Steyn left bewildered and drew a striking comparison, likening Bumrah's exclusion to a top striker being benched. Notably, Shubman Gill led India benched Jasprit Bumrah in the second test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham due to workload management. England is currently leading the five match Test series by 1-0 and this game is very important in context of the series. Steyn, who himself has been one of the greatest test bowlers, called out the decision- 'So Portugal have the best striker in the world in Ronaldo and they chose not to play him. That's madness. That's like India having Bumrah and choosing not to play, umm, him… wait, oh, no, what! shit I'm confused,' he tweeted, underlining the sheer audacity of the move. So Portugal have the best striker in the world in Ronaldo and they chose not to play him. Thats madness. That's like India having Bumrah and choosing not to play, umm, him… wait, oh, no, what! shit I'm confused — Dale Steyn (@DaleSteyn62) July 2, 2025 India's chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, had previously stated the move was rooted in workload management. Ahead of the tour in May, he revealed that Bumrah would only feature in three Tests, in line with recommendations from the BCCI medical team. Captain Shubman Gill reaffirmed the rationale at the toss: 'Just to manage his workload. We did get a good break and this is an important match for us. But the third Test being at Lord's, we think there'll be more in that pitch so we'll use him there.' Having taken a five-wicket haul in the first Test while his teammates failed to deliver the decision to bench Bumrah shocked many analysts. Despite the blowback, coach Gautam Gambhir and Gill remained firm, opting to safeguard Bumrah's fitness for the Lord's Test. Bumrash has overbowled during Border Gavaskar Trophy that resulted in his injury and the ace pacer missing out Champions Trophy 2025 due to the injury. India learning from its past mistakes is looking to manage their champion player better this time. Head Coach Gautam Gambhir also stated about Bumrah during last match's press conference that it is decided that Bumrh will play three Tests and there is a lot of cricket coming forward. India closed Day 1 at 310 for 5, thanks to a second successive ton from Gill and an aggressive yet composed 87 from Yashasvi Jaiswal
