We tried Edinburgh's new history tour on 'forgotten' women trailblazers
An Edinburgh tour company has been revitalising the capital's tourism circuit with a batch of new walking tours offering fresh perspectives on Scottish history.
Edinburgh Live recently reported on Fraser Horn's tour company, Street Historians, after he decided to replace his Harry Potter tours with LGBTQ ones this June.
Founded by Fraser just last year, the company aims to set itself apart from other tour companies through fresh offerings and brave stances.
We tried their brand new Edinburgh LGBTQ history tour and we liked it so much that we went back for more. This time, we tagged along for the Edinburgh's Forgotten Women Tour.
Tour guide Elinor said: "The idea behind the 'forgotten' women's tour is they've always been here doing cool interesting things, but we permanently forget them and make it so we don't have the same stories to remember them by."
The walking tour met on the Royal Mile and began by introducing us to a woman who I had been walking past for years without noticing. Elsie Inglis was a pioneering doctor in Edinburgh and one of the first women to practice medicine in the capital and is renowned for founding the Scottish Women's Hospitals. She even has a plaque on the Mile above Crest of Edinburgh shop.

I was struck by the fact that I had never noticed the plaque before, underlining the "forgotten" nature of many of the capital's most influential female figures.
Elinor pointed out how Edinburgh has remarkably few statues to commemorate women. There were plans to erect a statue in honour of Inglis, but the plans stalled and the plaque on the mile remains one of the only tangible monuments to Inglis in the city.
The tour meanders up the Mile and eventually through Grassmarket before concluding at the University of Edinburgh campus. On the way, Elinor made stops at City Chambers to discuss female recipients of the Edinburgh Award - such as J.K. Rowling and Nicola Benedetti, the first female director of Edinburgh international festival.
We learned about how Saint Giles was an odd choice for the patron saint of Edinburgh. According to Elinor, the man never set foot in Scotland in his life, let alone Edinburgh. In fact, there are several female saints with closer ties to the Scottish capital that might have made better options, such as Saint Margaret who helped establish Roman Catholicism in Scotland.
In Riddle's court off the Royal Mile, we observed a plaque dedicated to Patrick Geddes, the man credited as the pioneering town planner who shaped the layout of today's Edinburgh. However, Elinor told how his wife Anna Morton was a major influence on his work, saying: "There are a lot of plaques to him around the city but I think it should be 'Anna Morton and Patrick Geddes' on the plaque."
The tour shined a light on the prominent women who shaped Edinburgh's history, many of whom are overlooked. It was fascinating to stand before well-trodden Edinburgh landmarks and learn something completely new about a female historical figure.
The tour runs for two hours and includes many more stories than those mentioned in the article. You can find more information on booking a tour with Street Historians here.

UK's 'most Instagrammable city' has gorgeous views 'prettier than Santorini'
A UK city has been named prettier than spots in Greece, France and Italy according to a new study that determined Europe's prettiest places for an Instagram photo Santorini and the Amalfi Coast may be the kind of beautiful places you see all over your social media feeds, but one UK city has just beaten both destinations in new rankings of Europe's 'most Instagrammable locations'. Despite Santorini being famed for its whitewashed buildings with blue dome ceilings, gorgeous ocean views and cobbled streets, it's actually Edinburgh that's been proving more of a hit with those in search of that perfect Instagram backdrop. Considering the Scottish capital has a historic castle, cobbled streets, beautiful surroundings and a plethora of independent shops and eateries, it's not difficult to see why it's so popular with the Instagram crowd. For example, Harry Potter fans regularly flock to Victoria Street, lined with colourful terraced buildings that have often been credited as the inspiration behind Diagon Alley, not to mention nowadays there's a wizarding shop or two that you can explore. Meanwhile those who want to be #smug about getting up early for a hike will no doubt want to head to the top of Arthur's Seat, where you'll be treated to unrivalled views of the city. Then of course there's Edinburgh Castle which makes not only for a great selfie backdrop, but it's well worth a visit if you want to while away a couple of hours and learn all about Edinburgh's fascinating history. Back down on the cobbled streets, you can delve further underground and explore the expansive network of tunnels under the city, which boast a turbulent history full of crime and reported hauntings, with many a walking tour on offer to guide you and teach you about some of the city's spookiest stories. Then there are the quirky boutiques on offer, the plethora of restaurants (and yes, plenty of options if you want to try haggis), and the countless events on throughout the year including the iconic Edinburgh Fringe Festival, literary festivals and the Instagram-worthy Hogmanay celebrations complete with candlelit walks and Christmas markets. It's therefore no surprise that Edinburgh featured so highly in the rankings of Europe's most Instagrammable destinations, released by FerryHopper. The team behind the study looked at six different hashtag templates for each location to determine the winners, with factors such as how many posts are tagged across destinations, and the quality of photos. Edinburgh came ninth in the overall rankings, beating out a number of destinations in France, Greece and Italy. (The top spot went to Paris, followed by Nice and Barcelona). You can check out the full rankings below: Europe's 15 most Instagrammable locations Paris, France Nice, France Barcelona, Spain Valencia, Spain Ibiza, Spain Majorca, Spain Porto, Portugal Lisbon, Portugal Edinburgh, Scotland Santorini, Greece Provence, France Mykonos, Greece Bergen, Norway Amalfi Coast, Italy Cappadocia, Turkey Article continues below Looking for more staycation inspiration? Thousands of Scots get major 5G & 4G upgrade – find out if you're eligible
Scroll down to find out how it will affect you STAY CONNECTED Thousands of Scots get major 5G & 4G upgrade – find out if you're eligible THOUSANDS of Scots are set to get a major upgrade to their 4G and 5G coverage. O2 is making huge improvements to its mobile network across Scotland. 1 O2 making huge improvements to its mobile network across Scotland Credit: Alamy Over the past year, the mobile giant has significantly bolstered network capacity in more than 13,000 Scottish postcodes, reaching into some of the UK's most secluded corners. This effort is part of O2's £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan for this year, designed to future-proof its network and meet surging customer demand. The plan also includes the rollout of small cells in dense urban areas, such as Perth, to increase capacity. And it will address persistent connectivity headaches along major transport routes, at airports, motorways, railway lines and within stadiums and arenas. The benefits extend far beyond city limits, reaching into popular tourist hubs. Some 782 postcodes have seen upgrades in Edinburgh and there have been significant improvements to coverage across the Highlands. There's also now more reliable connectivity in some unique tourist destinations in Scotland that previously had none at all. These include Corrour Station, the UK's highest and most remote railway stop, Barra Airport, the only airport in the world with a scheduled beach runway and tidal timetable, Loch Ossian Eco Hostel and Glen Affric Hostel, reachable only by foot or bike. It comes as new research commissioned by O2 found that 48% of Brits are planning a staycation in Scotland this summer. And while many are eager for "off-grid" adventures, they still value reliable mobile connectivity for navigation, finding local amenities, entertainment and personal safety. Android fans set to receive major upgrade to turbocharge Wi-Fi and 5G on their next phone Dr Robert Joyce, Director of Mobile Access Engineering, at O2 said: 'Scotland has always been one of the most beautiful and remote destinations in the UK but now it's better connected than ever before. "Thanks to O2's Mobile Transformation Plan, whether they're hiking the Highlands, flying into Barra, or visiting a rural island, visitors can stay connected when and where it matters most.'
