
'I miss those films': Abhishek Bachchan on 'Kaalidhar Laapata' and his next big move
Beyond the glitz and grandiosity often associated with Hindi cinema, this film, and the conversations surrounding it, signal a subtle shift in storytelling, echoing a universal yearning for connection and meaning in the seemingly mundane.
Though our conversation took place over Zoom — with Abhishek playfully remarking, 'You didn't call us there! We would've come,' before professing his love for the viral Dubai chocolate — it quickly moved well beyond Kaalidhar Laapata, diving into the shifting landscape of Indian cinema, the growing appetite for layered characters, and how digital platforms are redefining not just how stories are told, but who gets to tell them.
The allure of the ordinary
Kaalidhar Laapata isn't another bombastic Bollywood spectacle. Its appeal, according to Abhishek, lies in its profound simplicity and its ability to resonate with the silent struggles of modern life. "I really liked the story and I loved the way [filmmaker Madhumita Sundararaman] wanted to tell it. The route she wanted to take to convey the story was very nice and fresh," he says.
The film strikes a chord with the universal feeling of burnout, stress, and the rising mental health issues stemming from a hyper-connected yet often disconnected existence. But for Abhishek, the decision to sign on was instinctive: "I have always said when you hear a film and if you're intrigued as to how this film is going to turn out and it's a film you'd like to watch, then you should do the film." The actor describes Kaalidhar Laapata as "very sweet,' possessing "a very strong moral compass," and leaving him with a "really nice" feeling after reading the script.
Contrary to initial assumptions, the actor isn't playing an 'older character' in the film. While the original — a Tamil film called KD (Karuppu Durai) — was centred on an 80-year-old man who wakes up from a three-month coma, only to overhear his family plotting to kill him through the ancient euthanasia ritual or ' thalaikoothal', this version takes a different turn.
He clarifies, "Kaalidhar is my age... he's in his late 40s, early 50s, similar to me." This age choice fundamentally shifts the film's emotional core, transforming it from a story of someone in their twilight years to a protagonist who, "has a life to live forward to, but hasn't been living that life." This distinction also elevates the film from a mere remake to an empathetic adaptation, says Abhishek.
Crafting a new narrative
In recent years, Abhishek has visibly gravitated towards roles that embrace vulnerability and emotional complexity (Think Dasvi [2022], I Want to Talk [2024]), a stark departure from the traditional mainstream hero image. Is this a conscious "2.0 version" of himself?
"I've never really... thought of it in such depth," Abhishek admits. "I guess it just kind of, the stories that I did or I'm a part of, they just resonate with me. I always ask myself, 'is this something that inspires you to go to work?' And if the answer is 'yes', I do the film. It's actually pretty simple."
This authenticity also extends to his on-screen chemistry with the young boy playing the role of Ballu in Kaalidhar Laapata. Though, Abhishek credits this to conscious effort: "I'm glad you picked up on it because that's something that we consciously worked on. And that's actually at the core of the film,' he adds. "Daivik [Baghela] is a wonderful young actor, has a lot of promise. And it was just a sheer pleasure to go to work every day with him."
Beyond the big screen
While reflecting on the challenges and opportunities of finding an audience for films that don't follow the typical 'action and big spectacle' formula, the film's producer, and executive director at Emmay Entertainment, shares her perspective on the digital revolution that's reshaping how stories are told and received.
"Honestly, I think it's a great time to be a producer or filmmaker or even an actor because when one has the opportunity to reach an audience through so many different media," says Monisha.
For her, platforms like OTT aren't just an alternative; they're a "seamless world" that allows stories like Kaalidhar Laapata, with their universal appeal, "to be discovered by somebody sitting in Dubai, you can be discovered by somebody sitting in Australia. As relevant to somebody sitting in New Delhi or in Indore for that matter."
Monisha also emphasises the importance of focusing on storytelling over traditional categorisation: "We have to appreciate the benefit of being able to tell our stories on these platforms and not really categorise them and say that certain stories go to theatre, certain stories go to digital." In fact, she views the rise of digital as a "wonderful way of creating a future first for storytelling and for giving opportunities to our filmmakers who would otherwise have to queue up for the limited infrastructure we have when it comes to theatres."
Both Monisha and Abhishek agree that the decision to take on a project begins with an intrinsic connection to the story, rather than its intended platform. "The first step has to be, is this something you want to be a part of? The rest of it is more logistical," Abhishek adds.
The bucket list and what lies ahead
Kaalidhar Laapata 's narrative also touches upon the idea of a bucket list, of doing things one has always wanted to do. An idea that Abhishek finds relatable on a personal level: "I think everybody has wishes, desires, and hopes and wants. So, that's what makes it very relatable." When pressed about his own list, he smiles, "I'd rather not say, but there are several things I still want to do."
Looking ahead, the actor hints at a shift in his cinematic trajectory. After a stretch of 'wonderfully intense work,' Abhishek admits he's craving a return to his roots. 'Right now, I'm itching to get back to the hardcore masala song-and-dance routine. I miss those films,' he says. So, while we await his return in a more playful, carefree avatar, here's a reminder that even after decades in the industry, his journey of exploration, both personal and professional, is far from over!

Diljit Dosanjh to Remain in Border 2 Despite Backlash
Indian film industry bodies have rescinded their earlier boycott of Diljit Dosanjh's role in the upcoming war drama Border 2, allowing the film's release with his participation. 'Metro In Dino' Review: A charming but imperfect ride
One of the toughest genres to pull off is the multi-narrative ensemble films with interconnected stories. Instead of one or two leads with a bunch of supporting actors adding their weight to a linear plot, in this case, there is a wide buffet of main characters, each going through their own important arcs, only for all of them to come together as a whole meal towards the end. In the world of rom-coms and rom-dramas, Love Actually remains the gold standard — an eternal favourite that few films, in either Hollywood or Bollywood, have managed to surpass. The challenge it mastered: making every storyline equally compelling, weaving them together with a natural, unifying thread and keeping the audience emotionally invested in each one. Bollywood isn't new to this storytelling form with 2007's Salaam-E-Ishq and Life in a Metro being standouts. The latter, of course, turned out to be one of the most nuanced explorations of modern relationships in mainstream Hindi cinema, made under the able direction of Anurag Basu with the stellar star cast including Irrfan Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma and Kay Kay Menon capturing the quiet despair, longing and fragility of urban lives. Adding to the emotional heft was Pritam's soulful soundtrack (Songs like Alvida, O Meri Jaan and In Dino are still beautiful to tune into on a rainy, romantic evening!). If this reads like a review of the 2007 film, it's because Metro…In Dino seems intent on cashing in on the nostalgia of its predecessor, in line with the 'franchise' addiction currently gripping Bollywood. There's nothing inherently wrong with riding a trend, but the problem lies in the fact that a film like Life in a... Metro didn't require a follow-up nearly two decades later. Relationships have evolved over the years, shaped by shifting social and economic realities. There are countless fresh, timely stories waiting to be told that reflect the present moment rather than leaning on the much-loved shoulders of a film from the past. But director Anurag Basu chooses to traverse the well trod path and here we are! The good news: it's refreshing to see a romantic drama from Bollywood after an overdose of violence and horror comedies we have been subjected to. Metro…In Dino heralds the industry's return to romance which is most definitely welcome. What does not work: the narrative. Four couples navigate the challenges of keeping love alive in an urban jungle. The 'metro' in this case is both figurative and literal, with the city and the mode of transportation playing a small role in each of their stories. There is a major difference though. In Life in a Metro, Mumbai, with its chaos, struggles and aspirations played a crucial part in channeling the protagonists' lives. The sequel is set in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Goa and Kolkata but despite the multiple locations, none of the cities don't really play a character. I wish they did! Monty and Kajol (Pankaj Tripathi and Konkona Sen Sharma) are a middle-aged couple stuck in a monotonous marriage, and their track explores what happens when one of them seeks excitement outside the institution. Akash and Shruti (Ali Fazal and Fatima Sana Shaikh) are grappling with the classic family-versus-career dilemma and the impact a partner's success or failure can have on a relationship. Parth and Chumki (Aditya Roy Kapur and Sara Ali Khan) represent the Gen Z couple — she is indecisive, and he is casual. Finally, there's Shibani and Parimal (Neena Gupta and Anupam Kher), who are seeking companionship in the twilight of their life: she is trapped in a dutiful but loveless long-term marriage (to a delightful Saswata Chatterjee) while he is a widower still aching from loss. Frankly, there is a lot to like in these plotlines, each of which could have been explored with the emotional gravitas they deserved. But Basu, also credited with the story, screenplay and cinematography, chooses to play it like a Hollywood musical. A lot of the couples' conflicts, perspectives, back stories and confusions are narrated with the characters breaking the fourth wall, and treatment of the scores hark back to the director's under-appreciated Jagga Jasoos. It works at times but at other times, it falls flat. The movie criss-crosses between being a musical and a drama resulting in a tonal shift that seems abrupt at times. What makes it more underwhelming is Pritam's music. The songs are nice and conversational but don't linger in your mind the way some of his previous tunes did. There's also the question of balance. Some tracks, like that of Pankaj Tripathi and Konkona Sen Sharma, start off brilliantly, laced with several laugh-out-loud moments (especially when he gets caught trying to cheat). But the arc begins to drag toward the end, with a conflict that feels unnecessarily prolonged. Ali Fazal and Fatima Sana Shaikh's segment had the potential to strike an emotional chord, and while a few scenes are impactful, their pain and conflict ultimately fail to resonate on a deeper level. The most underdeveloped arc is that of Sara Ali Khan and Aditya Roy Kapur. Sara is introduced as a smart woman albeit one who openly admits to being confused about love. Aditya plays the charming commitment-phobe with a steady stream of casual relationships. But while both characters evolve over time, there is little on-screen progression to convincingly show how or why they change. There are vignettes of relationship philosophies that each character spouts but I missed the powerful confrontations and harsh truths hurled by Kay Kay Menon, Shilpa Shetty and Sharman Joshi in the previous one. There are also a couple of scenes that are a throwback to the unforgettable 'screaming to let your angst out' sequence in Life in a Metro (remember Irrfan and Konkona?) but they appear forced and inorganic here. I really wish our filmmakers didn't feel the need to force-feed impact. The dialogues, quiet silences, BGM and expressions should do the trick! In a nutshell: I wanted to love Metro…In Dino but I just ended up liking it instead. Despite its flaws, the film has plenty to appreciate. Anurag Basu, along with co-DOP Abhishek Basu, captures the city's moods with affection and a palette of warm, vibrant colours. He's also backed by a cast that brings depth and personality to each role. Konkona Sen Sharma stands out as my favourite — she infuses Kajol with sass, spunk, and a streak of sharp humour, playing a woman who refuses to quietly accept her partner's mild infidelity. Saswata Chatterjee, in a brief but memorable role, is excellent as the emotionally detached husband who's both baffled and rattled by his wife's newfound independence. Ali Fazal and Fatima Sana Shaikh are competent and committed, but the real surprise is Aditya Roy Kapur. Beyond looking great, he exudes a relaxed charisma and undeniable screen presence that suit his character perfectly. As for Sara Ali Khan…let's just say she's better than most of the recent films she's been in. And just when you think the film has revealed all its cards, a charming cameo by a filmmaker known for his own romantic dramas adds a playful, meta touch. Metro…In Dino may not match the original's emotional depth or impact, but it's a warm, well-intentioned take on modern relationships enjoyable in some parts, but with a little more narrative finesse, it could have been truly memorable.
