Leah Williamson, Sarina Wiegman say Euro 2025 is ‘new challenge' for ‘new England'
England captain Leah Williamson says the Lionesses are not framing the 2025 European Championship as a title defence but a 'new opportunity' to win a major tournament away from home for the first time. England head into this summer's tournament in Switzerland as reigning champions after their victory on home soil at Euro 2022. Advertisement They followed that by reaching the World Cup final for the first time in 2023, but with a number of retirements and seven major tournament debutants, Sarina Wiegman said it was important her side 'move on' from their past success. 'It's new territory and you (Wiegman) explain it very well, not necessarily looking at it as a defence, but a new challenge and a new opportunity to do something new,' Williamson told a press conference on Friday, speaking ahead of England's group-stage opener against France. 'We take any challenge that comes our way.' Goalkeeper Mary Earps and forward Fran Kirby both announced their international retirement ahead of Euro 2025, while defender Millie Bright withdrew from selection. Rachel Daly, Ellen White and Jill Scott have also all called time on their England careers since winning Euro 2022. Wiegman has called up Michelle Agyemang, Aggie Beever-Jones, Grace Clinton, Khiara Keating, Maya Le Tissier, Anna Moorhouse and Jess Park for their maiden senior major tournament. Advertisement 'We've spoken about it several times a couple of months ago,' Wiegman said. 'The team has been in a bit of transition, and we absolutely cherish what we've done before, we never forget it, and those were lifetime experiences for us, for our families, and also for the fans. But you have to move on. 'And you have to be on top of things changing very quickly and developing very quickly, so we have to do too. And we came together in February and we came to say: it's a new challenge. The approach was there anyway, but we call it 'a new England'.' Lauren James made her return to action from the bench for the last half an hour against Jamaica in England's final pre-tournament friendly on Saturday, having missed the end of the season with a hamstring injury. Wiegman said James was available for further minutes against France but would not be drawn on whether the Chelsea forward was available to start. 'We're not going to give you the line-up, but she played 30 minutes last week, she can play more than that,' the England head coach said. This article originally appeared in The Athletic. Euro 2025: Long VAR review of 4-plus minutes decides no penalty for Denmark against Sweden
GENEVA (AP) — A video review of more than four minutes was needed to decide Denmark should not be awarded a penalty against Sweden early in their Women's European Championship game on Friday. Brazilian referee Edina Alves was whistled and jeered by fans during the long delay. She studied the incident on a fieldside monitor before deciding to award a free kick to Sweden instead. Advertisement Play eventually resumed in the 11th minute, fully five minutes after the incident in question in the Sweden penalty area. A free kick awarded for a foul against Denmark captain Pernille Harder was lofted toward the star forward who tangled with the falling Sweden winger Madelen Janogy. Harder was unable to control the ball which ran to safety toward Sweden goalkeeper Jennifer Falk. Replays of the incident eventually showed Janogy had herself been tripped by a Denmark opponent on the edge of the penalty area as she ran back to defend the cross. Alves was invited to referee at Euro 2025 as part of an exchange program between European soccer body UEFA and South America's CONMEBOL. ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press

Crystal Palace in offer for Ajax left-back Borna Sosa
Ajax have received an offer from Crystal Palace to sign left-back Borna Sosa. The 27-year-old is among several options Palace are considering as they look to add depth and competition for Tyrick Mitchell. A proposal has also been made to Sosa by the Premier League club, who hope to be playing Europa League football next season. Advertisement Talks are expected to continue as Palace explore whether an agreement can be reached, while the Croatia international has other options too. In January, Palace moved to strengthen their left wing-back department with a loan deal for Chelsea's Ben Chilwell. The 27-year-old had fallen out of favour under Enzo Maresca before the move to Palace, where he made seven substitute appearances and one start in the Premier League. Sosa spent last season on loan at Torino, featuring 19 times in Serie A as they finished 11th. He did not feature after February for the Turin side after falling out of favour and then suffering an injury. Sosa has been capped 26 times by Croatia. He started five of their six games as they reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2022, but featured only once as a substitute at the European Championship last summer. The left-sided player joined Ajax from Stuttgart in the summer of 2023, having previously made 118 appearances for the German side in his five seasons after signing from Dinamo Zagreb in his homeland. Mitchell has been Palace's first choice on the left side of defence since breaking into the first team in 2021. The 25-year-old has only missed six league games in four seasons since the start of the 2021-22 campaign. Palace are awaiting UEFA's decision on whether they will be allowed to play in the Europa League next term, after they qualified by winning the FA Cup but their participation was put in question by John Textor's Eagle Football also having a stake in Ligue 1 side Lyon, who also qualified for next season's competition. The delay relates to UEFA waiting for a decision from French football authorities on whether Lyon will be relegated to Ligue 2 due to financial irregularities, in which scenario they will forfeit their Europa League place. Advertisement Analysis by Crystal Palace correspondent Matt Woosnam If this deal comes off, then Palace will have finally added permanent cover and competition for Mitchell. Chilwell arrived on loan in January only to feature infrequently. Mitchell made 37 Premier League appearances last term, his performances remarkably consistent, but it is a lot to expect him to play with little rest. The England international has often played through minor injuries and niggles due to Palace's absence of cover in his position, but it is testament to how well he has done over the past five years that they have not brought anyone else in beyond Chilwell. It is not the most important position for Palace to strengthen but is one they have been looking at for some time to help Mitchell out. To finally have serious competition may push him to improve his performances even more, even if he has adapted well to being a left wing-back, having only ever previously operated as a defensively-minded left-back before Oliver Glasner took over in February 2024.
