UL hosts European Dodgeball Championships for first time

RTÉ News2 days ago

"Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive and Dodge!" The five D's of Dodgeball were once made famous by the character of Patches O'Houlohan (played by actor Rip Thorn) in the 2004 hit comedy movie Dodgeball.
Twenty-one years later, and the first ever major dodgeball tournament has arrived in Ireland this weekend, and far from comedy, this is serious athletic competition.
The tenth edition of the European Dodgeball Championships will see 76 teams, from 21 countries, battle it out across men's, women's and mixed events to claim European honours.
The action is taking place at the University of Limerick and is a milestone for the sport, as it will be the first European Dodgeball Championships to include both Cloth and Foam ball formats.
Tamas Heitzmann, from the Irish Dodgeball Association, explained why Limerick won the bid.
"Irish Dodgeball has long aspired to bring an international tournament to Ireland, and that dream has become a reality. We are thrilled to welcome our dodgeball friends from across Europe and show them what Irish Dodgeball can achieve.
"The University of Limerick is an ideal venue for an international sports tournament, with world-class facilities, a vibrant campus, and a strong tradition of hosting major sporting events," he said.
Over 600 athletes, along with their trainers, coaches and fans, will compete across the three divisions this weekend.
Ireland player, Katie Kinkaid, says the ethos of inclusivity and community is something that draws a lot of people to the sport.
"I started playing just after COVID when everything started opening back up again. My partner's been playing for about 12 years, so he got me into it. I came along to a few sessions in Phoenix Park in Dublin and I just loved it."
"The team, the camaraderie and getting to play with the boys in mixed games is really interesting. There are not very many sports you get to play alongside the boys. It's very satisfying to hit them with the ball.
"We've got people who play for our Dublin team from all over the world, and we all come together and go on trips. We go to tournaments together, we go on holidays. That's really great," she added.
Ms Kinkaid says dodgeball is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and it's starting to make in-roads in Ireland.
"In Ireland, it's kind of up and coming. We've got about 5 or 6 clubs across the country, but in places like England, they've got junior teams, youth teams, university teams coming all the way through. So, it's really, really taking off there."

Ireland is not one of the favourites to win, with previous European men's team winners Northern Ireland and Austria tipped to go deep in the tournament. However, Ireland men's captain John Taaffe is hopeful of their chances.
"Look, we're optimistic. I think we're kind of dark horse in the foam division. A lot of people have put us down beforehand, but we're quietly confident in what we can do."
An avid athlete all his life, Mr Taaffe explains how he found dodgeball, and what attracted him to the sport.
"I'm a bit sports mad and had tried everything like soccer, rugby and GAA growing up. I decided to give something different, a try and after one dodgeball session, I was hooked. That was eight years ago now and I think I've barely missed a week since. It's been fantastic," he said.
"I started playing locally in Dublin, and within a couple of years, I was playing for Ireland, going to Madison Square Garden, going to Canada, it brings you all over the world," he added.
And, what are Irish captain's thoughts on the movie that brought the sport to the attention of millions around the globe?
"It draws people to the sport. Some people try and make a joke out of it, but at the end of the day, it's a fun movie and it's a fun sport. Anything that paints us in a fun light is what we aim for, and it's something we're actually proud of."

McCartney completes set of medals at European U23 championships

ELLIE MCCARTNEY HAS won a silver medal in the 200m Breaststroke at the European U23 Championships to go with the gold and bronze she won earlier in Slovakia. McCartney completed the set in a time of 2:24.02 to compliment her gold in the 200m Individual Medley and bronze in the 100m Breaststroke. The National Centre Limerick swimmer was third after 100m behind Denmark's Clara Rybek-Anderson and Lithuania's Kotryna Teterekova, before mounting her come back, out splitting both swimmers ahead of her in the second 100 metres. But it wasn't enough time to catch 2024 European silver medallist in the event Rybek-Anderson, who got the touch ahead of McCartney in 2:23.89. Teterekova took third in 2:24.86. Advertisement 'I'm happy with how the past few days have panned out, in the general scale of things this is only one step forward to the World Championships in Singapore,' McCartney said after the race. 'Its bittersweet being so close to getting gold again, but to get a pb, I know I put my best foot forward and my best performance out there, and to walk away a European U23 Champion is more than I could have dreamed of. I've achieved my goals that I wanted to while I was here and anything else was a bonus, so I'm walking away with my head held high.' Meanwhile at the Sette Colli International in Rome, Ellen Walshe doubled up with a silver and bronze medal on the last night of racing. After winning gold in the 400m Individual Medley on Friday, the Templeogue swimmer added silver in the 200m Butterfly in 2:09.59 and bronze in the 200m Individual Medley in 2:11.80 to her haul. McSharry won a second silver medal as she clocked 2:25.05 to take second in the final of the 200m Breaststroke. She won her first silver medal in the 100m Breaststroke on Thursday. Next up for Irish swimmers is the European Junior Championships, taking place in Samorin, Slovakia, which is the same venue as the European U23 Championships. The competition will run from Tuesday 1 July to Sunday 6 July, with sixteen Irish swimmers selected. The team include 2024 European Junior Champion in the 200m Backstroke and Silver medallist in the 100m Backstroke, John Shortt, and bronze medallist in the 100m Freestyle from the last edition Paris 2024 Olympian, Grace Davison. Shortt is also qualified for the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.

Paul Pogba to return to football with Monaco in bid to revive career

PAUL POGBA HAS signed a two-year deal with Ligue 1 side Monaco to return to football after a near two-year absence, the club announced on Saturday. The 2018 World Cup winner has made only 12 appearances across the last three seasons due to injuries, an 18-month doping ban and an extortion case in which he was the victim. Pogba failed a drugs test in August 2023 after a match for Juventus and has been free to return to football since March, although his contract at the Italian giants was terminated last year. The midfielder will now play club football in Ligue 1 for the first time in his professional career. 'I am determined to get back on the pitch, mentally ready, physically ready, it's just a matter of time,' the 32-year-old told French television last weekend. Pogba played in the Le Havre youth team before signing for Manchester United in 2009. Advertisement He made only a handful of first-team appearances for the three-time European champions before signing for Juventus in 2012. Pogba won four consecutive Serie A titles in Turin before rejoining United for a then-world record €105 million. He moved back to Juventus three years ago but struggled with a series of injuries. In 2024, his brother Mathias was sentenced to three years in prison, with two years suspended, for his role in a plot to extort 13 million euros from Pogba in 2022. Pogba has scored 11 goals in 91 appearances for the France national team, playing a starring role and scoring in their World Cup final victory over Croatia seven years ago. His new club Monaco will play in the Champions League next season after finishing third in Ligue 1 last term. – © AFP 2025
