What Eagles fans should know about the Dallas Cowboys before training camp begins

USA Today21-07-2025
With mid-July fast approaching, we're looking at what Eagles fans should know about the Dallas Cowboys before training camp begins.
The Eagles have one of the youngest teams in the NFL after several key departures and the retirement of Brandon Graham during the offseason. Such attrition provides the opportunity for younger players on the roster to assume larger roles while creating another Super Bowl window for a team that'll have new starters at several key defensive positions.
Over the next two weeks, we will conduct mini-previews of four NFC East teams as they begin reporting for training camp, with the Giants' rookies set to report a week from Tuesday. Washington is next, with Philadelphia reporting on July 21 and Dallas reporting on July 22.

Cowboys key weapons
On offense, Dallas will attack opposing defenses with a healthy Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and George Pickens as its primary weapons, along with Jake Ferguson at tight end, featuring a revamped run game and an improved offensive line. On defense, everything starts with Micah Parsons, the re-signed Osa Odighizuwa, DaRon Bland, and a returning Trevon Diggs.
Will the Cowboys' free agency additions pan out?
Dallas acquired star wide receiver George Pickens via trade following a quiet free agency period that saw the team add Solomon Thomas (Edge), running back Javonte Williams, running back Miles Sanders, wide receiver Parris Campbell, Robert Jones (OL), Payton Turner (Edge), and linebacker Kenneth Murray Jr. among others.
How did the Cowboys approach the 2025 NFL draft?
The Dallas Cowboys had a total of nine draft picks in the 2025 NFL Draft. Their selections included: Tyler Booker (1st round, 12th overall), Donovan Ezeiruaku (2nd round, 44th overall), Shavon Revel Jr. (3rd round, 76th overall), Jaydon Blue (5th round, 149th overall), Shemar James (5th round, 152nd overall), Ajani Cornelius (6th round, 204th overall), Jay Toia (7th round, 217th overall), Phil Mafah (7th round, 239th overall), and Tommy Akingbesote (7th round, 247th overall). Booker and Ezeiruaka expect to be immediate contributors, while Jaydon Blue could be a breakout candidate at running back.
When does the Dallas Cowboys start training camp?
The NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys are headed back to Oxnard, California, for training camp from July 22 through August 13. This year's camp will mark the 46th year the team has trained in Southern California and the 19th consecutive season they have spent at the Oxnard location. It's also the first training camp for Brian Schottenheimer as the team's head coach – before replacing Mike McCarthy, Schottenheimer was the offensive coordinator for two seasons. The practices include three preseason games, the first of which is against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium on August 9.

Saquon Barkley Reacts to Young Eagles Star's Shocking Accomplishment

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. As July winds down, the NFL continues to reveal its annual Top 100 list heading into the 2025 NFL season. Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley hasn't been mentioned just yet, but the star running back has been involved in plenty of commentary so far. This week, Barkley had a chance to discuss one of his young teammates, Cooper DeJean, who was shocked to crack the NFL's Top 100 list after just one year in the league. "I'm in the Top 100? Really?" DeJean said with genuine shock. "That's uh.. I mean, I don't even know what to think. That's pretty cool." Eagles linebacker Zack Baun lit up with a smile when he found out in the next scene of the video reveal. "Let's go!" the veteran linebacker said. MoreAs for Barkley, he discussed the most impressive factors that DeJean possesses. "The most impressive thing about Coop is just the way he goes to work. The way he preps his body for practice," said the All-Pro rusher. "You go into the weight room, and he's in there first. He came in, and when things got rolling, he never looked back." NFL Top 100 Players of 2025:@Eagles CB Cooper DeJean makes his debut at No. 60! @NFLFilms — NFL (@NFL) July 28, 2025 Although DeJean didn't become an immediate starter for the Eagles during his rookie season, the team realized he was too good to be stashed away. There came a point in time when DeJean was relied on to make some major plays for the Eagles, and he delivered. As a rookie, DeJean had a viral moment where he laid down an open-field tackle against the Baltimore Ravens' power back, Derrick Henry. While that was his most memorable regular-season play, Barkley and Baun pointed to a situation against the Cincinnati Bengals, where DeJean chased the star receiver Ja'Marr Chase around pre-snap before making an impressive tackle to prevent any gain. Of course, the video montage was capped off with DeJean's most famous play to date: A pick-six against Patrick Mahomes on the Super Bowl stage. "I don't think there's a better way to celebrate your birthday than one of the biggest pick-sixes in the Super Bowl history," Barkley finished. DeJean's biggest contribution of the 2024 NFL season was the first interception of his career. The Eagles were putting together a dominant defensive performance against the Kansas City Chiefs, and DeJean's interception ignited the fire. He finished the 2024 NFL season with 51 tackles, six pass deflections, one forced fumble, and three fumble recoveries during the regular season. In the playoffs, DeJean registered 18 tackles, four pass deflections, one fumble recovery, and an interception for a touchdown. Trevon Diggs expects to return to the field by September

Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs' 2025 season appeared in doubt after he underwent chondral bone graft surgery on his left knee Jan. 23. The surgery transplants pieces of bone tissue into the joint to stimulate growth. Diggs, thought, always had the season opener circled on his calendar. He might not make it back by Sept. 4 for the first game against the Eagles, but Diggs is ahead of schedule in his rehab and hopes to be on the field sometime in September. Diggs told Clarence Hill of All City DLLS he will not need to be placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, which would keep him out at least four games. He missed six games with his knee injury last season. The Cowboys docked Diggs $500,000 for not rehabbing at the team facility enough, but he credits his team in South Florida for getting him back quicker than expected. The two-time Pro Bowler tore the anterior cruciate ligament in the same knee during a Week 3 practice in 2023.

Top free agent options at tackle after Cowboys avoid season-ending injury to LT Guyton

For around 45 minutes, the expectation was that the Dallas Cowboys were going to be without left tackle Tyler Guyton for the year. Now that things aren't nearly that bad, he'll miss the next 4-6 weeks, the front office still needs to re-consider their backup plans. No matter the player, teams with quality front offices have contingencies in place before entering training camp should the unthinkable happen. When concern was heavy that Guyton had torn his ACL in the team's second padded practice of training camp, they likely started thinking about Plan B. Initially, Plan B will look like giving a shot to the in-house options. Asim Richards and Nate Thomas had been taking the backup snaps at left tackle behind Guyton. Hakeem Adeniji has experience at left tackle, but through the first week of camp the team had been working him exclusively as the backup right tackle as it looked like the new coaching regime preferred dedicated sides of the field. Much was made of how the team didn't sign any mid-level veteran during free agency, somewhat giving a vote of confidence to Guyton, who struggled in his rookie season after moving over from playing right tackle at Oklahoma. But now that leaves the team with little experience at the spot meant to protect their $60 million per year quarterback Dak Prescott. After such a scare, it's probably prudent for the team to start to make those calls, in cause Guyton's recovery and rehab takes longer than expected. The problem is this year, more than any other season, going outside of the building doesn't offer many quality options. Tyron Smith Flashing back to March, the club re-signing their future Hall of Famer in order to give him his proper goodbye, allowing Tyron Smith to retire as a Dallas Cowboy. They might want to pick up the phone and see if watching people report to training camp has stirred some juices up. It's a long shot, but Smith started 10 games last year, and his 23 combined starts over his last two years is technically the most he's seen in a stretch since 2018-2019. It's not like Smith is coming back for the dog days of August, but perhaps there's a world where the team talks him into returning after camp, giving him a six-week window to get himself back in game shape to help for the stretch of the season. Jedrick Wills The best option might be the most difficult to pull off. Wills is a recent top-10 overall pick, selected by Cleveland in the 2020 draft. He's never lived up to the billing, but he has been a serviceable tackle in the past. The problem is that Wills declared he intended to sit out all of 2025 to give himself a year away from the game to heal up. He's dealt with a series of knee issues and wants to see if taking a year off will allow things to strengthen to the point he can return to the field full healthy. Of course, Wills has played his entire career in Cleveland. The Browns are absolutely bad enough to turn someone off from football. Wills is a free agent though and could've signed elsewhere, but there's zero reason why the Cowboys shouldn't call him to gauge his current interest in returning to the game. Germain Ifedi Ifedi may be the most sane and possible option. Despite sitting out all of 2023, Ifedi had a really strong close to his 2024, with 80+ pass blocking grades against Miami and Baltimore in the final two weeks of the season. The first two-thirds of his season were an abject failure, but perhaps things are on the upward swing for the eight-year veteran. George Fant A truly break-glass-in-case-of-emeregency, Fant's starting days are likely well behind him. However, bringing him in for a trial run to see if there's anything left in the tank for the nine-year veteran might be wise. Fant started his career with Seatle and has spent time with the New York Jets, Houston Texans before returning to Seattle for two games last season. Fant has never been a consistent performer, but he's waiting for a call and there isn't much else on the market at this point.
