APU's Secure Path AGV achieves highest accolades in Brussels
These bright young engineers won the Platinum Medal Award at the virtual Eureka International Brussels Invention and Innovation Competition 2025, held in Belgium from April 6 to 7.
Their innovation, the 'SecurePath AGV', is a highly intelligent AGV designed to improve safety and emergency response capabilities.
Combining artificial intelligence (AI) with sophisticated robotics, a custom LLM chatbot, computer vision for detection, and a navigation system, the SecurePath AGV offers practical social engineering solutions that can be deployed in any environment.
Representing the Fantastic 4.0, Chong explained that the key to clinching the win lay in the complexity of the innovation's application, the clarity with which the team illustrated its real-world impact, and the strength of their system architecture presentation during the judging session.
'We did face a few hurdles – tight deadlines for getting everything completed, stiff competition from the highly talented international teams, and the need to technically present the product's complexity to a panel of international judges within a limited time,' he shared.
Through this competition, the team learnt how to pitch complex engineering ideas in a way that is both clear and convincing, highlight key points of innovation and practicality, and accept constructive criticism.
'We also got to see a lot of cutting-edge ideas from other international participants, which really broadened our understanding of what's trending in tech innovation worldwide.
'It was exciting. It was a fantastic experience to showcase our project on an international stage, meet other innovators and swap ideas across different fields,' Chong said, adding that the competition added value to their studies at APU.
'It has helped us put the technical knowledge we have gained on campus to good use in a real-world context, sharpened our critical thinking and presentation skills, and given us a real boost of confidence for tackling future engineering challenges,' he said.
Beyond the Platinum Medal, the team also secured three additional special awards: one from Innovation Initiative Co-operative Inc. 'The Inventors Circle' (Toronto, Canada), another from the Turkish Inventors Association, and a third from the National University of Science and Technology Politehnica Bucharest.
According to APU chief innovation and enterprise officer Prof Dr Vinesh Thiruchelvam, this recognition reaffirms APU's commitment to nurturing talent into innovators who address complex social challenges by bridging computational and engineering skills.
He explained that these APU students have shown just how well Malaysian universities can compete and excel on the global stage.
'The SecurePath AGV is not your ordinary robot. Infused with AI, it was built on the robust SCUTTLE robotic platform with a sturdy aluminium frame.
'It uses SLAM navigation for independent patrolling, machine vision to spot falls and recognise faces, an LLM-powered chatbot for natural chat, and an automated emergency dispensing system to provide medical supplies as required in various environments,' he said.
CREDIT head Assistant Prof Narendran Ramasenderan, who mentored the students alongside Krishna Ravinchandra, congratulated the Fantastic 4.0 on their success.
Narendran said the SecurePath AGV was the result of months of hard graft, technical brilliance and innovative thinking.
'These students have proven that APU's hands-on, project-based learning approach produces graduates who are ready to take on global challenges,' he said.
CREDIT has been instrumental in developing cutting-edge IoT solutions across various industries, and this latest award adds to the centre's growing list of international accolades, solidifying APU's reputation as a technological innovation hub in Malaysia and the Asean region.
The team's multi-award-winning rover can independently navigate busy retail spaces, identify emergency situations, chat with people via voice or text, and provide immediate access to medical supplies through cleverly designed servo-controlled compartments.
For APU, this international recognition highlights the university's successful approach to education – one that emphasises the practical application of classroom learning alongside the development of high-level industry skills to prepare graduates for the real world.

Illegal moneylenders getting increasingly aggressive, says MCA's Michael Chong
KUALA LUMPUR: Loansharks of Ah Longs have stooped to another level when it comes to intimidation by hosting "a funeral" for one of their borrowers, revealed Datuk Seri Michael Chong. The MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head said a victim by the name of Tan saw a portrait of himself in a wake setting, complete with joss sticks. 'The complainant had borrowed RM10,000 from a money lender for his business in February, and had repaid RM6,000. Previously, he had taken five different loans totalling RM50,000, all of which have been settled. 'On June 26, an Ah Long sent him a picture of a staged wake, which has since been deleted. This kind of intimidation shows how low they can go. Previously the Ah Long threw paint and fire bombs, but because this is considered arson, they are using psychological tactics,' he told a press conference at Wisma MCA on Tuesday (July 1). In another case involving a complainant by the name of Chan, the loan shark's runner has been harassing borrowers for more and more money. 'The complainant had borrowed RM700 and paid RM1,000 to this Ah Long who goes by the name of Kai Qian, but he kept demanding for more. 'On June 26, this loan shark began to send voice messages threatening the complainant. I suspect that this guy, who is a runner, has gone rogue without the knowledge of his boss, thus causing the company a big problem. As such, we have the duty to expose such individuals because some of these money lenders are legitimate,' he said. Chan had borrowed from nine different sources to cover his living expenses, and has settled two on his own, while he has managed to settle RM4,800 out of RM12,500 owed to the remaining seven. Chong also revealed a heartbreaking case involving a mother, Kuek Bee Bee, who wants to disown her son Chong Kok, who fled from money lenders. The 63-year-old from Cheras, who was sobbing over the fate of her family, is pleading with the money lenders to stop the harassment. 'The family has received multiple threats via phone calls demanding payment, as well as burning the house and kidnapping Kuek's grandchildren. 'Her son left the house on June 17 and the family has no knowledge of his whereabouts. The mother had previously paid RM13,000 of the debts in May, but the son borrowed more. 'The family was even locked out of their home with a chain and padlock, with a note instructing them to contact several numbers. The family has since lodged three reports in June,' Chong said, adding that the family is now living in fear, leading to the mother disowning her son. In view of rampant aggresive intimidation of borrowers, Chong's deputy Ivan Tan said there was need for stricter laws to address the matter, with the bulk of such cases falling under Section 506 and 503 of the Penal Code. 'Many of these Ah Long are quite aware of these laws and the punishment for it, and look for ways to skirt around them. 'So, we would like to urge the government to study the Penal Code pertaining to this issue,' said Tan, who is a lawyer. As of June, the MCA has received 165 moneylending related cases involving a sum of RM18.6mil, of which over 85% are from the Chinese community.

Sabahans must hold own key, says SAPP

KOTA KINABALU (June 28): The people of Sabah must defend their sovereignty and make sure the key to their future stays in their own hands in the coming state election, said Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) deputy president cum secretary-general Datuk Richard Yong We Kong. 'Sarawak has stood firm in defending its rights. Its state government recorded RM14.1 billion in revenue for 2024, which is more than twice the revenue of Sabah. 'Sarawak has already set up its own sovereign wealth fund and is introducing free education. This shows a high level of financial independence. In comparison, Sabah's revenue during the same period is only RM6.4 billion. Our financial structure still relies heavily on federal allocations.' Richard, who also serves as Deputy Speaker of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly, made these remarks on Friday evening while officiating the annual general meeting of SAPP Kepayan and Moyog Constituency Liaison Committees, held jointly in Penampang. He pointed out that Sabah has yet to fully implement the 40 percent net revenue return promised under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). 'This continues to prevent us from having genuine financial control.' He added that even after five prime ministers, MA63 has made little real progress and Sabah continues to be sidelined. Richard urged everyone in Sabah to pay close attention to the court case brought by the Sabah Law Society, which will be heard on July 7. 'This case is seeking to legally enforce our 40 percent revenue entitlement, which allows, just from inland revenue alone, Sabah to gain at least RM2 billion more. 'What matters most is that Sabah's future must be decided by Sabahans who are truly committed to defending our rights. We cannot hand the key to outsiders,' he added. SAPP Kepayan CLC chairman Datuk Chong Pit Fah said the annual general meeting is especially important as the state election draws near. 'This is a moment for us to seriously reflect on the future of Sabah,' he said. He emphasised that Sarawak has been consistent in standing its ground on issues such as oil royalties, federal allocations and control over its own media narrative. The federal government does not dare to cross Sarawak's lines. Everything Sarawak has asked for has been fulfilled, step by step. 'Today, Sarawak is financially richer than the federal government. If we in Sabah want the same, there is only one way forward. We must vote for local parties.' Chong said that SAPP, since leaving Barisan Nasional in 2008, was the first party to openly champion the cause of Sabah autonomy, and had never shied away from speaking out. 'Parties from Peninsular Malaysia, however, now claim that they also support autonomy. But such talk is only meant to confuse the public and blur the facts. 'True autonomy means we no longer have to fly across the South China Sea to ask for what is rightfully ours,' he added. Chong called on Sabah voters to stop being deceived that this is impossible. Sarawak is already a living example of what can be done. 'Blindly following others will only cause us to lose our direction. In the end, all we will get is tax, tax and more tax.' SAPP Moyog CLC chairman Aloysius Danim Siap said that the party has always taken a practical and down-to-earth approach, and engaged the grassroots directly and does not rely on empty slogans. 'Our leaders are consistent in both word and action. We never back down when it comes to defending Sabah's sovereignty. Real progress must be concrete and deliverable,' he said.
