Shock wins rock Royal Ascot G1's
ASCOT Cercene and Time For Sandals brought smiles to the faces of bookmakers on the fourth day of Royal Ascot on June 20, springing huge shocks in the two Group 1 races.
Cercene was at 33-1 ($160 on the Singapore tote) the longest price winner ever in the £725,750 (S$1.26 million) Coronation Stakes (1,600m). The Australian-owned filly by Australia fought back under Gary Carroll to beat French favourite Zarigana (Mickael Barzalona).
The win gave Irish trainer Joe Murphy, who had only had one previous runner at the meeting, his first Group 1 hurrah and easily his most prestigious win, and it comes on arguably the biggest stage.
"This is 50 years of work, that's what it is, of love and care, and all for the owners we have, all our people, it's just a whole group of people together," said Murphy, 70, who has been training since 1977.
"This is heaven on Earth."
For Carroll, it was his third Royal Ascot winner but also his first ever Group 1 winner anywhere, and due reward for flying back to Berkshire after riding in Ireland on Thursday.
"Hugely good horses are very hard to come by and sometimes only one comes along in a lifetime and I guess mine has," he said.
Harry Eustace has got a real taste now for Group 1 races at Royal Ascot. After breaking his duck with Docklands in the opener - the Queen Anne Stakes (1,600m) on Tuesday - he added a second in the £725,750 Commonwealth Cup (1,200m) with Time For Sandals, a shock 25-1 winner ($144).
Before her stunning win, Time For Sandals, a filly by Sands Of Mali, had one debut win at Kempton and four placings in five starts.
"I don't know, it has not landed yet," said Eustace. "You have to be very careful with Ascot. If you get your hopes up, it can bite you back."
For his father James, who Harry took over from, it was "magic".
"It is so wonderful," said Eustace senior, who also enjoyed success at Royal Ascot, and whose younger son David is having a great start to his Hong Kong training career.
"We tried to get Harry to go to university, we succeeded initially and he went to Edinburgh.
"He had two good years and a lot of fun before he dropped out and then took off for Australia and the racing bug bit."
For jockey Richard Kingscote, it was a seventh Royal Ascot winner, but first at Group 1 level, ending a run of 67 defeats at the meeting.
"I've had some nice horses but this will do the world of good," he said. "I'm delighted to ride a good winner for Harry, he's a gentleman, it's a happy yard."
Godolphin's Charlie Appleby was looking to end his three-year losing run, but hot favourite Shadow of Light never featured. AFP

'Pickles' relishes first win of 2025 in Brazil
Australian surfer Molly "Pickles" Picklum won the Vivo Rio Pro in Brazil on Sunday, taking out local star Luana Silva to claim her first win of the year and jump to the top of the world rankings with just two events of the regular season remaining. Californian powerhouse Cole Houshmand also won his first world championship tour event of 2025, beating Griffin Colapinto in the final. "The fans all week, whether they love me or hate me, it's the most passionate people in the world," Houshmand said. "And I love it. I feed off it. We're competing in a stadium here. I looked at the beach, and you can't even see open space. "It's what we dream of and what we live for." Picklum carried her dominant early form in the competition through to the finals, putting together powerful turns and combinations on both left- and right-handers to finish with a two-wave total of 15, the highest of the women's event. 'Before I was going out, I felt really emotional because I was just like, okay, I get another chance to try and get a victory," the 22-year-old said. "I've dreamt so much of winning here in Rio, too. I'm a real energetic person, I love the Brazilian energy, and to get a win this year means so much, for sure." The tour next heads to the right-hand point of Jeffreys Bay in South Africa for the 10th stop on the schedule, before the final regular-season event at the 2024 Paris Olympics venue of Teahupo'o. The top five men and women will then compete in a one-day, winner-takes-all Finals Day in Fiji in late August or early September. Luis Enrique eyes historic PSG season as they reach Club World Cup quarters
Paris St Germain manager Luis Enrique said his team were making history after they brushed aside Inter Miami 4-0 in the Club World Cup last 16 on Sunday. The French side, who have already won their domestic league, the French Cup and the Champions League, are edging closer to completing a perfect season by lifting the Club World Cup. "This is clearly a historic season for our club, and we intend to continue making history in this competition," former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique told reporters. Norris showed his character after Canada, says Stella
SPIELBERG, Austria - McLaren team principal Andrea Stella praised Lando Norris's character as the Briton bounced back from a collision and race retirement in Canada to lead home a McLaren one-two at the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday. The Italian said Norris still needed "to polish a few things" to become the finished article, however, in a Formula One season that is turning into a two-horse drivers' title chase with team mate Oscar Piastri. Norris had to fend off the Australian to set up Sunday's victory two weeks after his clash with his team mate forced him out in Montreal. "The outcome (in Canada) was unfortunate because Lando could not finish the race. That was simply a misjudgement. The way Lando handled that, I think showed the character," said Stella. "The speed is there -- Lando pole position in Monaco... he was the faster car in Canada, pole position in Austria. "We just have to polish a few things in executions and results which is what Lando demonstrated today. So, very proud of Lando, very proud of how everyone handled the situation in Canada and the fact we end up united and stronger." The runaway constructors' championship leaders avoided another on-track accident, with Piastri delivering a mea culpa over team radio after the chequered flag following a near collision. "There was only one situation where the two cars ended up a little too close and that was in turn four when Oscar locked up and he ended up very close to Lando," said Stella. "We gave Oscar this feedback and I want to acknowledge that I am proud of Oscar. As soon as he crossed the finish line he went on the radio and he said sorry for the situation in turn four. "I am so refreshed by how the team reviewed the situation in Canada. We have come out stronger and even more united." Norris's win cut the gap to Piastri at the top of the drivers' standings to 15 points ahead of a home British race next weekend. Norris, seven times a race winner, has yet to take back-to-back wins in the same F1 season but Stella expects him to rectify that. "In terms of Lando being able to do so, yes, of course," he said. "There is absolutely no reason why not -- the talent, the quality, the race craft and even the trajectory Lando is in. "The most important thing is the back-to-back victory is for McLaren."
