Accused went on shoplifting spree to place items on her father's grave
Sergeant Tom Mulcahy told Clonakilty District Court that Eve Guerin, aged 20, with an address at Kinlay House, Shandon Street, Cork, had admitted the thefts from four different retailers in Dunmanway, Co Cork, on June 9, 2025.
The court was told gardaí had received a report of shoplifting from a retailer in Dunmanway at 4.15pm. A patrol car was dispatched and a person matching the description of the accused identified as Eve Guerin was apprehended on Bridge Street in the town.
Ms Guerin had in her possession a shopping bag with a number of items she could not account for.
The court was told items were stolen from Deals 4 U, Buckley's Hardware, Costcutter and SuperValu. The total value of the goods, which were all returned in saleable condition, was €83.69.
The court heard Ms Guerin had 14 previous convictions.
Defence solicitor Colette McCarthy said Ms Guerin's father has died suddenly in February and she had been struggling to deal with the loss. She said the items stolen were intended to be placed on Ms Guerin's father's grave. She said her client apologised for her behaviour.
Judge Joanne Carroll said Ms Guerin needed to 'stay out of trouble', and she requested a probation report be prepared. The matter was adjourned until September 23 for completion of a probation report, and Ms Guerin was granted bail on her own bond of €200 cash.

At the Court of Appeal on Tuesday, his legal team asked for the application to bring new evidence to be withdrawn. This was granted by the three presiding appeal is proceeding on other grounds brought by McGregor's legal team. Last November, Nikita Hand won her claim against McGregor after accusing the professional fighter of raping her in a Dublin hotel in December 2018. Pic: Collins Courts Earlier this year, a judge ordered McGregor to pay Ms Hand €100,000 of her €250,000 damages and €200,000 of her expected €1.3 million legal costs before an appeal. McGregor faced an accusation that he 'brutally raped and battered' Ms Hand at a hotel in south Dublin in December 2018. The sportsman told the court last November he had consensual sex with Ms Hand in a penthouse at the Beacon Hotel in south Dublin. Ms Hand, 35, was awarded damages and costs after a three-week trial in which the jury found him civilly liable for assault.. Pic: Fran Veale The court heard that Ms Hand was taken in an ambulance to the Rotunda Hospital the following day where she was assessed in the sexual assault treatment unit (SATU). A paramedic who examined Ms Hand the day after the assault had told the court she had not seen 'someone so bruised' in a long time. Ms Hand broke down several times as she gave evidence for almost three days. The MMA star has since sought an appeal which was initially due to include an application to bring fresh evidence. Pic: Fran Veale The jury had been told Ms Hand had to leave her job as a hairdresser and has not been able to work since because of her mental health, that her relationship with her partner ended months after the incident, she had to move out of her home in Drimnagh, and her mortgage is now in arrears. After eight days of evidence and three days listening to closing speeches and the judge's charge, the jury of eight women and four men spent six hours and 10 minutes deliberating before returning their verdict. The total amount of damages awarded to Ms Hand by the jury was €248,603.60.
