EastEnders' Jessie Wallace shares her emotional reaction to onscreen daughter Michelle Ryan's shock return to the BBC soap after 20 years away from the Slater family
The actress, now 41, has reprised her role as Zoe Slater, Kat's on-screen daughter, two decades after her dramatic exit from Albert Square.
In a behind-the-scenes video shared by the official EastEnders Instagram page, Jessie admitted she cried upon hearing that Michelle was reprising her role.
She said: 'So, Michelle is back after 20 years. I've missed her tremendously, I've missed her, working with her, the whole Kat and Zoe thing, you know, going back to, 'You ain't my mother,' 'Yes I am.'
'And when I found out Michelle was coming back, I cried.
'And then when we met up, I cried because I've missed you.'
Zoe made a bombshell return to the BBC soap on Monday night's episode, after her return was kept under wraps.
Viewers will see Zoe in two further episodes this week but she will be back full-time this summer, as her mother Kat prepares to tie the knot with Alfie Moon for the third time.
Zoe had been seen as a mystery figure throughout Monday's episode, with her face finally revealed during its closing moments.
The episode hadn't been released on BBC iPlayer at 6am that morning, meaning all viewers had to tune into the evening broadcast, where Zoe's return was unveiled.
Speaking on her return to the BBC soap, Michelle said: 'It feels like coming home. After doing my first few scenes, it was like I'd never been away. It all happened at the right time.
'I'd already been thinking about a return because I'd met up with Kacey Ainsworth (Little Mo) and Kim Medcalf (Sam Mitchell) and we were reminiscing our fond memories of the show, and I'd also joined social media and saw that there was still a lot of love for the character.
'It just so happened that at the same time, EastEnders had announced a new Exec who was keen to explore the potential of a return as he was such a massive fan of Zoe and the Slaters, so both of our worlds aligned at the right time, and I'm so excited to be back.
'When I was pitched the storylines, and when I read the scripts, I knew it was the right decision.'
EastEnders new boss, Executive Producer Ben Wadey added: 'Before I even stepped into the role, Zoe Slater was on my wish-list of returnees as, although we haven't seen her on screen for twenty years, her character has transcended time due to her popular storylines.'
Since Zoe's exit from Walford 20 years ago, it's been revealed that she and Kat have become estranged.
Teasing her character's reason to come back to Albert Square, Michelle added: 'I can't say too much as there is a lot of drama to come, but Zoe is a mess.
'She's not the girl that left Walford twenty years ago, and she's been really struggling on her own.
'She has her defences up, but this week you will see that she needs help, but whether she is willing to accept it is another story.'
It comes after MailOnline revealed in February that, despite multiple attempts from bosses over the years, Michelle had refused to return to EastEnders.
A source told MailOnline: 'Bosses reached out to Michelle several times over the years, they would love to have her back. For example, as the soap was approaching its big 30th anniversary, it was a gentle approach asking if she would consider a return in the lead up to it all.
'This was at the very early stages of their plans but Michelle refused and there was a lot of disappointment amongst bosses.
The moment is still considered one of the most iconic in EastEnders' 40-year history
'It's always been quite baffling why she wouldn't want to reprise a character who is still very much adored by the fans. It's been 20 years since she left Albert Square but still people are talking about her character.'
During her time on the show, Michelle was involved in one of EastEnders' biggest storylines with it revealed that Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) was in fact Zoe's mother and not her sister, with explosive scenes seeing her yell: 'You ain't my mother!', only for Kat to reply: 'Yes I am!'
Back in 2001, EastEnders' leopard-print-loving Kat Slater, who had been sexually abused by her uncle, finally revealed to her 'sister' Zoe that she was, in fact, her mother.
It remains one of the most famous and iconic moments in EastEnders' 40-year history - a scene that has been mimicked by soap fans worldwide.
The unforgettable storyline catapulted Michelle, then 16, to superstardom, and in 2005, she walked away from Walford for the final time, five years after arriving in EastEnders with the rest of the Slater clan.
Zoe also famously kissed her best friend Kelly Taylor on a New Year's Eve night out in 2003 when they got stranded and started getting emotional.
The kiss sparked criticism at the time, but Brooke Kinsella, who played Kelly, defended the scene.
She said: 'It's not a gratuitous ratings getting move, it's not some kind of big lesbian kiss.
'It's the way two best friends who have a lot of love for each other show their emotions.'
During her time on EastEnders, Zoe also had a string of failed romances, including a disastrous relationship with Dennis Rickman (Nigel Harman).
The affair - which resulted in a pregnancy - saw Zoe embroiled in the murder of Den Watts with accomplices Chrissie Watts and Sam Mitchell, which eventually led to her exit from the soap.
In the lead up to the soap's 40th, a number of former characters came back including Grant Mitchell, Bianca Jackson, Chrissie Watts, David Wicks, Nigel Bates, Mickey Miller and even Angie Watts but there was no Zoe.
Michelle admitted at the time of quitting that she 'got quite bored in the end' playing Zoe, telling the Bristol Evening Post: 'Doing the same thing day in, day out. It's just so boring. I like to jump from different things.'
'I always saw EastEnders as an apprenticeship. I always wanted to go on and do different things. I have some really good friends from that show but the door is closed.
'I've always taken chances. I think that's how you progress – by stepping out and doing different things.
'I really do like my freedom and jumping from job to job. I just want to work with people I admire and respect, wherever that be – big budget, low budget, leading role, supporting role.'
After leaving the show 20 years ago, the star almost cracked America after landing the leading role in the re-imagining of the popular seventies TV show Bionic Woman, though the show was cancelled after just one season.
Since then the British star has appeared in several independent films, including 4.3.2.1. and Cockneys vs Zombies.
She has also had guest roles in BBC shows Merlin, Doctor Who and Death In Paradise.
Her most recent acting film appearance was in Frankenstein: Legacy where she starred as Lady Charlotte, in addition to 2025's Finding My Voice in which she played Lisa Kendall.
EastEnders fans previously speculated they wanted to see Michelle back in Albert Square, as the soap celebrated its 40th Anniversary back in February.
When Michelle shared an album of throw-back snaps of her on set 20 years ago to Instagram, her fans flocked to her comments as they were convinced she would make a return.
One penned: 'You can't convince me that you're not a secret return for the 40th, Jessie talking about wanting you to return, now this….its happening, you just can't say, double like if it's true'
'Please come back loved the kat and Zoe storyline'
'I would love Zoe to return to Eastenders if she does I would love to see Zoe have scenes with her brothers and with Stacey and Jean and Lily'

Simon Cowell's pal Lucy Spraggan reveals he also considered signing up for SAS: Who Dares Wins but she had to warn him off tough series due to health concerns
Simon Cowell 's close pal Lucy Spraggan says the music mogul considered signing up for Channel 4 's SAS: Who Dares Wins - but she told him he has 'no chance'. The former X Factor frontman may live a life of luxury, but it seems he wanted to show just how tough he is. Simon, 65, was pleased to hear that Lucy had been in talks for the series, where it puts celebs through their paces as they take on different intense challenges. Lucy - who has grown close to Simon since starring on The X Factor in 2012 - said how the entertainment mogul thought it would be a 'great idea' for her to do the show as she loves being outdoors and they often enjoy shooting air rifles together. And he was so thrilled for her that he reportedly said he'll 'maybe try and have a go at it'. Lucy told The Sun: 'I was like, "You would literally die!" It was funny because it really contextualised how hard it was that I just straight away said to him, "You would have no chance".' The new series of SAS: Who Dares Wins, which begins next Sunday at 9pm, sees Simon give Lucy a pep talk, but it doesn't end well. Her friendship with Simon is better than ever, and last year he even walked her down the aisle during her star-studded wedding to girlfriend Emilia Smith. 'It was really strange,' Lucy laughed. 'It's a high stress environment and I looked to the side and saw him, like this is weird! 'But he was here and Lauren [Silverman] was there.' In recent months, Simon has been working on launching a new talent show. The show titled The Next Act follows Cowell on a mission to find the next global boyband in the vein of One Direction, and is due to stream on Netflix in the coming months. While Netflix is yet to commission the second series, it is thought he is keen to capitalise on the buzz and is already eyeing a second series - this time focusing on up-and-coming girl groups. A source told the publication: 'There's huge amount of excitement around the boyband search show dropping on Netflix, which is expected to drop later this year. 'So it makes sense to consider a sequel with a similar concept but looking for the female equivalent. 'And if anyone can do it, it's Simon. After all, through One Direction and Little Mix, he helped deliver two of the biggest pop acts of the last two decades.' The Next Act is thought to air over six episodes, where viewers will see nationwide open auditions, exclusive behind-the-scenes access and the release of the group's debut single.

Alex Jones had ‘no idea' about misconduct complaints made against Jermaine Jenas
Alex Jones has spoken out for the first time on former co-star Jermaine Jenas' axe from the BBC. The Welsh broadcaster worked closely with Jenas on The One Show. As one of the original presenters, Jones joined in 2010, while Jenas came on board in 2021. Speaking out after Jenas was removed from the lineup last year, Jones has insisted she had 'no idea' about complaints made against her former colleague. The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, 42, was removed from the presenting team at BBC's Match Of The Day and The One Show following alleged issues relating to workplace conduct. Before he was sacked in August, Jenas had been a regular pundit on sports programmes and a presenter on BBC Radio 5 Live. Jones, 48, told the Big Issue she did not know about the complaints until he had left. She said: 'I very much take people on face value. But with JJ [Jenas], I didn't know what was going on. 'I had no idea. I thought he was taking extended leave.' 'The BBC didn't share with me what was going on until they actually dealt with it. And, you know, they did what they thought was right,' she added. 'If that was my daughter and she felt uncomfortable with someone's behaviour, I hope that whatever company she was working for would deal with it swiftly as well.' After being let go by the BBC, Jenas apologised, saying he had done 'nothing illegal' and that 'inappropriate messages' sent were 'between two consenting adults'. Months later, Jenas' wife, Ellie Penfold, announced the couple had split up after 16 years together. In a statement on her Instagram Story, Penfold wrote: 'I never imagined I would have to share something so personal with the public, but given the situation, I feel it's necessary. 'After 16 years together and 4 wonderful children, Jermaine and I have decided to part ways. 'We will remain friends and continue to co-parent.' Jenas returned to broadcasting on TalkSport radio in February after the outlet distanced itself from him in the wake of his departure from the BBC. Earlier this month, he reflected on 'losing everything' in the wake of his scandal, both personally and professionally. Jenas, who was also dropped by his talent agency after the explicit messages to two BBC co-workers were uncovered, initially hit out at the Beeb, vowing to seek legal action and reminding the public there are 'two sides to every story'. Almost one year later, however, he admitted that he didn't deal with the repercussions of his actions in the 'right way'. Speaking candidly on the Let Me Tell You Something podcast, Jenas compared the messages he'd sent to words of Fifty Shades lead Christian Grey. 'It was sexting, as simple as that, but it was initiated to me, and then I responded. 'It wasn't just me going out of my way, and it definitely 100% wasn't, 'If you do this, I will help you in your work',' he insisted. 'There was no power element to it going on.' Jenas went on to say that he accepts 'full responsibility' for the fallout, including how his marriage, which he claims was already on the rocks, broke up. 'I dealt with it wrong and got heavily punished for it by losing pretty much everything that I had at that time.' Meanwhile, for Jones, this is not the first time she has had a co-presenter leave The One Show. Married comedian Jason Manford, who joined the programme at the same time as her in August 2010, resigned only three months into the role for sharing sexual internet messages with female fans. More Trending He admitted to sending the messages, telling The Sun at the time: 'I have decided after careful consideration to step down from The One Show to concentrate on my family and tour commitments. 'I have only myself to blame.' Despite co-presenting on the show for a few months, Jones said she is still 'really good pals' with Manford. The One Show's Alex Jones had 'no idea' about the complaints made against Jermaine Jenas
The One Show presenter Alex Jones said she had 'no idea' about the complaints made against her former co-host Jermaine Jenas The One Show presenter Alex Jones said she had 'no idea' about the complaints made against her former co-host Jermaine Jenas. The former footballer, 42, who presented alongside Alex on the programme for four years, was dismissed from the BBC last August due to improper conduct. Former Match of the Day star Jermaine admitted to sending lewd messages to two former colleagues at the BBC. In addition to losing his BBC role, the former England midfielder saw his representation with a talent agency terminated. His 14-year marriage to Ellie Penfold also ended as their separation was publicly acknowledged in March. In a new interview, Welsh presenter Alex revealed she didn't know anything about the complaints until Jermaine left the corporation. The 48-year-old said: "I very much take people on face value. But with JJ [Jenas] I didn't know what was going on. I had no idea. I thought he was taking extended leave. 'The BBC didn't share with me what was going on until they actually dealt with it. And, you know, they did what they thought was right. 'If that was my daughter and she felt uncomfortable with someone's behaviour, I hope that whatever company she was working for would deal with it swiftly as well.' Jermaine recently appeared on The Dressing Room Podcast with ex-Chelsea players Carlton Cole, Joe Cole and Wayne Bridge and compared the worlds of football and television. He spoke candidly about the cutthroat nature of the television industry, revealing that gossiping and backstabbing are commonplace. The star claimed that he experienced this firsthand during his time on The One Show, where he worked with various stand-in presenters. "Television is not like [football], they just talk behind your back," he revealed (via Wales Online). "Everybody in television would just lie to your face. When I was a main presenter on the show, sometimes when Alex Jones wouldn't be working because she was having children at the time, I was working with various female presenters. "We'd come off air and they'd go, 'Oh did you like her JJ', I'm like, 'Yeah she's really good, it's her first time, she's done really well.' And then I'd just see them talking c*** about them going, 'Yeah she's not coming back.'" After being sacked from the BBC, he apologised and said he had done 'nothing illegal' and that 'inappropriate messages' sent were 'between two consenting adults'. Months later, Jenas' wife, Ellie Penfold, announced the couple had split up after 16 years together. She said on Instagram: "I never imagined I would have to share something so personal with the public, but given the situation, I feel it's necessary. 'After 16 years together and 4 wonderful children, Jermaine and I have decided to part ways. We will remain friends and continue to co-parent.'
